@wahpowprod i know its not looking too good but unfortunately this is the only time i can go...hopefully ill get lucky and be able to get a couple powder days in
As a European I was once 2008 one week skiing in Utah; mostly Alta and Snowbird. This was the most incredible skiing i did ever in my life! Nothing in the alps comes close to this!
my mom fell own hard while skiing and i was going and i stop to watch her go down this real steep hill after i did then i realize oh my go my mom is gonna die and then i say her skii go out from under her and i was like aww @#$%, After that she fell down more like tumbled down and so i was like MOM U OKAY? then i hear NO and im like okay we r screwed so i take off my snowboard and go run up the hill and see if shes ok and she fractured her leg and now shes fine
Man, that looks so good! I have skied since 3yrs old almost every season one week or so in the Alps, have only had it like this a couple times, now I'm 27. When I had it, it was the most amazing feeling, really calm and quiet.
Would love to go do 2weeks in Utah, if I went mid winter, say, late Jan to early Feb, what are the chances of scoring powder like this? Thanks!
@wahpowprod Ya, that's the best time of year to ski. Nobody goes, the powder finaly returns after a dry January and everyone but the ski adicts miss out on it!
wow, watching this vid makes me so sad that its almost may and another year has gone by that i could not make out west :( oh well, guess i'll get the klx 300 out and hope that make the summer go fast and it wiil be november once again :)
Alta is the shit. I wish I could ski it more often. Unfortunately, whenever we go to Utah we stay at Park City. Maybe when I go for a weekend with my uncle next year. Nice Vid though!
@warty2200 It is in HD. It just happens that it was posted to YouTube a few months before they accepted bigger file sizes. It was all I could manage at the time. Check Highway 210 for some better quality of the same.
@dudethatswhatsup RIGHT?!? Some bitter people who think they get tons of snow and then watch this, only to realize they have never skied deep powder. That's who.
Thanks for the clip. Had the pleasure of skiing Alta fluff during Christmas 1972, Snow storm dropped about 2 feet of fresh dry powder; most snow in years. They had to blast the mountains for avalanches. Drifts reached up to my chest. Felt like floating on a cloud. Had to slow down to breathe, hence mask and snorkel skiing.
Hey wahpowprod its dumping in the valley right now! I can only imagine how much ur gettin up there! Hopefully the hardpack days will be to a minimum this season! I like to hear about people moving to Colorado!
@gunner47m4m4 what are you talking about? Beaver get's HALF the yearly snowfall that Alta gets. There is nothing like this at Beaver Creek. But have fun there.
@wahpowprod i didnt know that- but dude- anything is better than skiing another season in pennsylvania- thats all i was sayin- im told the amount of skiable terrain between beaver and vail though is unimaginable- i probably wont get bored
@wahpowprod There's a place in Colorado that gets almost as much as Alta, but it doesn't get skied off near as quick. With Alta, if you're not there within 3 days of a dump, often there's little fresh left. :-)
@jtomasik Silverton? Averages 400 and only has one lift. Wolf Creek? Claims 465 annually, which is a stretch. Neither is 500. There are lots of skis areas that get "almost as much as Alta". Three days after a storm? Try three hours! The place is Mecca for powder hounds and even an inch or two creates the most intense powder panic. Colorando has some good skiing and some light snow, but Utah is where it's at.
@17cusTom Alta's average is 500 inches. What's interesting about this number is that it's a low ball: 05-06 totaled 637in, 07-08 was 701in, 08-09 was 696in and so on. I think 83-84 was the best season with something like 811 inches. Of course there have been bad years like everywhere else: 06-07 was a horribly low season at only 389 inches. So one of the worst seasons at Alta is an epic season almost anywhere else. In fact Park City, which is just around the corner, averages only 360 inches.
@17cusTom Yeah Canada gets a lot of snow. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's a Maritime snowpack, as opposed to our Continental snowpack, right? The pacific northwest is plagued with massive amounts of snowfall. Mt Baker had a 95 foot year in 98-99. Usually the snow is a lot more dense in those areas. Water content in Utah and Colorado can be in the single digits, while the Costal areas get up near 30%. My good friend moves to the Kootenay's every winter and tours his ass off. It looks INSANE!!
@wahpowprod Utah has a much drier powder than Nothern Rockies. I love Alta, I had a great powder day, like in the video, during a trip in the early 90's. It does not get any better.
@196121001 ok this will sound messed up now but when you see the map it will make sense. on the summit side, go either hard right to glory basin, sproulers, kubas corners, or go hard left to enchanted forest, catch basin, blasters ridge. the best snow is on those runs and for the 3 years ive had a seasons pass there, ive never skiied any of those runs without getting any pow.
I live 30 mins away from Alta and its the only place I ski, unless I get free passes elsewhere. It does get icy there at times but your always gonna get days like in this vid and it is the source of life!
@Eazyluvable are you kidding me? icy? which Alta are you talking about? I have lived IN Alta for 9 years and can't remember any "icy" days. Maybe some hardpack, but never any ice.
@wahpowprod I've skied Alta, Utah for 20 years, and even though we get over 500" of snow a year it can go 30 days or more with no snow. These conditions might be a perfect day in Vermont, but here at Alta we call it Ice. I can remember almost 30 days with no snow last season in Jan and Feb, the snow was so hard it wasn't worth the trip up the canyon!!! At least 6 days over waist deep in April though!! Only at Alta!!
@Eazyluvable Like I said, hardpack, not ice. Just because the horse is in Brazil doesn't mean you can call it a donkey. Between Jan 1 and Feb 28 of 2010 there were only 18 days without precipitation, with the longest block being 3 days. I'm just sayin'...
@wahpowprod Okay.. Point taken. I'm not trying to bad mouth Alta, I love it there! My original comment was in refrence to other comments about Spring Breakers going there and it being icy. I was only trying to point out that no matter what the precipitation is like season after season Alta will produce sick days like in the Vid. Since you have the records what was the longest block last year?
reminds me of demons but its really cool ive done it before...sometimes snow gets in ur face alot STILL FUN!!! its kinda hard at first but then after like 2-4 runs u get used to it and get better this is an amazing video
@wahpowprod yea, thats the absolute sweetest thing ive ever seen as far as powder goes, steamboat doesnt have shit on this, ive skied the boat 6 or 7 powder days and its all skied out by 10 am, best powder ive hit is southeast wyoming but ive never had a day like this
Which resort would you recommend for someone from europe, who wants to get spots and powder like in this video? By the way i'm a Snowboarder. So no Alta for me :(
@Infernobasilea Snowbird... it's right next to Alta and almost gets the same storms. It gets slightly less snow year round, but I personally prefer the terrain at snowbird.
Which resort would you recommend for someone from europe, who wants to get spots and powder like in this video? By the way i'm a Snowboarder. So no Alta for me :( greetings from Switzerland
Snowbird 10, Alta - 18... Yes, It's true.. Now I don't hate boarders at all but they sure track the mountain out fast. Alta does Not allow them, which is why it's one of the best.
@Justin3515 ,you cant compare, but, i have always, have gotten pow over my face, in utah, it gets the largest, amound of snow, spring skiing, is, the secret....
Well, I am trying to plan a really good trip for next year. I usually ski in b.c. (revelstoke) which is an awesome upcoming resort that gets 40 to 60 feet a year. how much does alta get
@thehurtingskater So true. I went there for Spring Break this year (2010) and it was super icy. I was still happy just to be there, but there was no good powder to be found.
@2WhiteAndNerdy The best time to go to Alta is the last two weeks of January and first two weeks of February. That is when we usually get dumped on the most.
@goodbusiness12@goodbusiness12 Yes I have, I prefer Alta because it gets more snow, and better snow. Over the past several years Alta has been ranked #1 or #2 best powder in North America. Nonetheless, Snowbasin has some pretty nice terrain and seems to be more spread out with larger open faces. Snowbasin also has 800 more acres of skiable area than Alta. Yet, I think Alta and especially Snowbird have more terrain variety. I'm a local resident of the town of Alta so I could be bias
@firedog9 ok thanks alot. im flying to utah the first week of february and it seems like all the resorts are very good. the only bad thing i heard about alta is that it can get crowded. are the lift lines usually bad in early february?
@goodbusiness12 I'm in Colorado right now, finishing my undergrad and the Alta is not even comparable to the crowds I see at Breckenridge, Vail, Keystone, etc. I would hardly consider Alta or Snowbird crowded. I don't think i'v ever waited in line for more than 15-20 minutes at Alta and I'v skied Alta hundreds of times. When there are crowds, they are usually at the bottom on a weekend, and in the morning rush (9-11am).
@firedog9 Once you get up on the mountain and move to mid-mountain lifts, crowds seem to be less, and by 12:00pm lines are less than a few minutes. If you go to Alta/Snowbird on a weekday, crowds won't be an issue whatsoever. When I'v skied Snowbasin I didn't notice crowds being any less.
@goodbusiness12 Yeah, if you're going to ski Utah, Alta and Snowbird should be THE TOP of the list. I haven't quite found anything comparable to Snowbird and Alta terrain and snow while I'v been here in Colorado. The only mountain that comes close for me is Vail. To be fair though, I have to say the only downside to Alta and Snowbird (for some) is it's not a big resort, it's not a ski village like Vail or Breckenridge. It's a little town nestled in the canyon and its focus is just great skiing.
@firedog9 One thing I forgot to mention is that if you are commuting up and down the canyon you will hit the red snake of death if you head down after 3:00pm. There is an incredibly long line getting down the canyon, which doesn't dissipate for a while. I don't actually know how long it would take you to get down because I literally used to ski home, but I'm guessing around an hour to get to the bottom of the canyon. If you leave before 3:00pm or after 6:30 it will only take you 20mins.
@firedog9 thanks alot man. my trip to alta is booked. btw while you're in colorado you should try aspen. this winter will be my first time skiing out west but from what i've heard aspen is even better than vail. the vertical drop is over 4000 feet and they have over 400 runs. even if its not as good as snowbird and alta, just be happy your in the rockies. i've skied in pennsylvania my whole life and trust me it sucks.
@goodbusiness12 haha I hear ya man, I'm originally from New Hampshire, so I know of the New England skiing. I was fortunate enough that my parents bought a place in Alta 40 years ago so that when we got sick of the New England skiing we could run out to Utah lol. I will certainly give aspen a try,
This is total FACE SHOTS SKIING!!! This is what you live fore!!!.... I love this stuff... Get these kind of conditions in Fernie, BC 3 or 4 times a year... Some times more...
I have skied in Utah a lot and have never had great luck at alta... powder-wise, guess i missed out!!! probably because im in love with powder mountain in the spring and alta always seems to be chopped up in march...what say you Utahns? is this just poor timing?
Dude were you born in a hole....lol jk. but ALTA is worldly known for just powder. It's the best powder in the world. I have skied alta my whole life and love it. poor poor timing indeed
this makes me horny, i went to alta a couple years back and skied in this deep of snow, but i am from the east coast and don't get this kind of snow :(
You'd be surprised to know that if you do it for long enough, it becomes much easier to ride in powder, so long as it is not flat. Maybe that is just for snowboarding (I snowboard).
how do you think the skiing will be at alta this year in late December?

@zH4WKz I would wait until February or March. It's been a rough start to the season.

Well, I am trying to plan a really good trip for next year. I usually ski in b.c. (revelstoke) which is an awesome upcoming resort that gets 40 to 60 feet a year. how much does alta get
Justin3515 1 year ago
How I have always remembered Alta. Steep and deep. Always bring your fat skis

@thehurtingskater So true. I went there for Spring Break this year (2010) and it was super icy. I was still happy just to be there, but there was no good powder to be found.
2WhiteAndNerdy 1 year ago
@2WhiteAndNerdy The best time to go to Alta is the last two weeks of January and first two weeks of February. That is when we usually get dumped on the most.

@firedog9 hey have you tried snowbasin? im planning on going there late january and wondering if you can compare it to alta

@goodbusiness12 @goodbusiness12 Yes I have, I prefer Alta because it gets more snow, and better snow.

@firedog9 ok thanks alot. im flying to utah the first week of february and it seems like all the resorts are very good. the only bad thing i heard about alta is that it can get crowded. are the lift lines usually bad in early february?
goodbusiness12 1 year ago

@firedog9 ok cool, i appreciate the info man. you just convinced me to try alta and snowbird instead.

It's a little town nestled in the canyon and its focus is just great skiing.
firedog9 1 year ago
@firedog9 One thing I forgot to mention is that if you are commuting up and down the canyon you will hit the red snake of death if you head down after 3:00pm. There is an incredibly long line getting down the canyon, which doesn't dissipate for a while. I don't actually know how long it would take you to get down because I literally used to ski home, but I'm guessing around an hour to get to the bottom of the canyon. If you leave before 3:00pm or after 6:30 it will only take you 20mins.

@firedog9 thanks alot man. my trip to alta is booked. btw while you're in colorado you should try aspen. this winter will be my first time skiing out west but from what i've heard aspen is even better than vail. the vertical drop is over 4000 feet and they have over 400 runs. even if its not as good as snowbird and alta, just be happy your in the rockies. i've skied in pennsylvania my whole life and trust me it sucks.
goodbusiness12 1 year ago
@goodbusiness12 haha I hear ya man, I'm originally from New Hampshire, so I know of the New England skiing. I was fortunate enough that my parents bought a place in Alta 40 years ago so that when we got sick of the New England skiing we could run out to Utah lol. I will certainly give aspen a try,

snowboarddude117 2 years ago
You'd be surprised to know that if you do it for long enough, it becomes much easier to ride in powder, so long as it is not flat. Maybe that is just for snowboarding (I snowboard).
I actually find it easier to land in powder.
