The MTAC is an excellent holster. Retention is not a problem. The curve of the holster, while wearing it, aids in retention. If the holster is adjusted off body then it may be too tight when worn. I carry a full size Les Baer cocked and locked in a MTAC, but...... The HK has an excellent DA pull and I don't see the wisdom in carrying it cocked and locked.
I have two hybrid leather/kydex holsters: a MTAC and The Answer. With the MTAC, I also find the retention is on the lighter side. With Tucker Gunleather's The Answer, with leather liner, I found the retention a lot snugger.
I just got an MTAC for my USPc. I carry cocked and locked too. It looks like they changed the leather backing in the newer ones. Mine doesn't engage the safety lever at all.
I am trying to get rid of my AdSense account so you all are not subjected to these advertisements. If I jumped through all the appropriate hoops in the right order, the ads will be gone in just 180days or so. Thanks!
THANK YOU for actually commenting on the retention. I probably watched every video review on this holster on YouTube, and most didn't say anything about the retention when you're not actually wearing it.
awesome review... aside from the muzzle sweep. thanks for doing the review AFTER you'd had it for a while, to point out the flaws you found along the way
"all guns are always loaded" .. it's one of those rules you aren't supposed to break. not because of safety, but because it forms good habits. if he had swept his hand...meh. but he swept his center of mass and then his head. so, although there was no danger, it was definitely bad form.
I used to worry about keeping the safety on when I carried a Bersa Thunder 360 in a leather IWB, but now I carry a Glock in a CTAC; no external safety. My retention is better than yours but I'm considering MTAC because I don't like the way CTAC is starting to chafe my legs after extended wear. I emailed CompTac to ask if they could convert my existing CTACs to MTACs for less than it would cost to buy new...I doubt it but never hurts to ask.
@JJR93 You find a solution to the CTAC issues? I hope you found a remedy. Thanks for viewing. Next video I will pay more attention to muzzle etiquette.
A good review. Have to give the author props, he's concealing a very big gun. It must be a testament to the holster's good design to do such a good job on concealing that big HK.
Just an FYI....Since you have explained that you are aware of the safety issue and continue to use this holster, you have released any rights you may have had to sue the manufacturer in the event you have a AD related to this issue even though it is known.
What is an AD? Just an FYI... in this coutry your can sue anyone you want regardless of what you have done or signed. Also, the manufacturer chooses to make this holster for DA mode USP pistols and they have chosen to not advertise limitations said which could easily be considered negligence on their behalf. Thanks for watching. It is good to bring more attention to this issue.
@ignip AD is short for 'Accidental Discharge' which is something that does not exist because all discharges like this are no accident, but negligence.
How is the wear on the pistol? I have a HK usp 45 and an HK 45 and I'm looking to get a more comfortable iwb holster.....that is not going to mess up the finish more than normal wear.
The finish wore very quick but seems to have stopped. Dones't look bad to me. Very even wear I guess. When you carry a gun in public, it is a tool. I suggest you not get too attached to its appearance especially considering if you use it on someone there is a chance to will lose the gun to an evidence room.
Yes, anytime you plan on carrying a firearm in a IWB (Inside Waist Band) holster, you will need to have larger sized pants.
Some people may not like the idea of having to buy new clothes, but others who have decided to carry understand the responsibility and know that sacrifices must be made when you are dealing with your personal safety.
And if someone still doesn't want to go out and buy new clothes, there are still plenty of other carry options for them instead of IWB.
The holster would probably function okay cross draw. I did not try to see how far you could flip the cant backwards, but it looks like you could get it at least perpendicular to the ground.
Thickness of the leather or the width to which it was cut? The website allows you to select the width of the belt: 1.25, 1.5 and 1.75 in. I think mine is 1.5, and it has two prongs on the buckle instead of one, which I think keeps it from twisting as much under load. It is a cheap belt and has a dramatic curve to it when flat. Check out the Kydex reinforced belts from Comp-Tac. Its a strip of Kydex sewn between leather. If you get one, be sure to let me know how you like it.
Yeah the width, mine is like really wide. I just ordered the 1.75 MTAC then watched your video, i'm hoping it will work well with my glock 27. About those belts yeah.. I've noticed all the CCW belts look like grampa belts... I'm 22 and they dont seem to be any good ones for younger people.
I am 22 also. Do you ever get crap from people in gun stores for being young? I don't know if it that I have long hair or what, but it sure is a hassle sometimes. Just seems like they don't want my business.
Nope I don't go to the stores around Atlanta anymore, the prices suck and were douche bags. But the people at ranges yeah. They always feel the need to tell me what I have is illegal or what I "need" or look at me like im some sort of noob. It's usually from the .22 shooter crowd. They don't like HKs or anything black plastic or thats an Ak model.
Most people in gun shops are assholes in my experiance. I've bought 14 guns in three years and they still treat me like shit. Like I'm bothering them to look at something. I figured because I'm young as well. Makes me want to open my own shop to show these old pricks how to run a business. Thanks for the review. I have a CTAC but have been thinking about one of these.
Great review, thanks for posting. I'm a little late to the party, since I've already got one though. I carry my S&W M&P 9c in my Minotaur and it's the most comfortable holster I've ever worn. I wear a collared shirt all day tucked over the bun, and concealment is good. The only problem I've had with printing was with a light colored polo, but it was my boss who noticed and he carries too, so he was probably looking for it. Anyway, good holster. Worth the $80!
What the hell are you talking about! Crossbreed holsters run 70 dollars. The MTac is 80 dollars. Why in the hell would a company make a knock off and have it be more then the real deal? They would not make any money people would buy the real thing for less. We get it you like crossbreed. So what who cares. Don't have to knock other peoples gear.
Man, thanks so much for the vid. Saved me some time and money because I carry my taurus 92 in cond 1. Is there a holster you recommend for our type of pistols?
best thing to do is to carry in DA mode, if i had lets say a 1911 then maybe i would consider carrying cond 1 but given the option my sig pro gives me, i prefer to carry DA.
As far as I know 1911 s are only SA (condition 1). You must have the hammer cocked, or you have to rack the slide with an empty chamber. I could be wrong. Only shot a 1911 a couple times.
"Comp-Tac is pleased to offer gear made by Minotaur Holsters, a new company specializing in kydex/leather hybrid holsters. These holsters combine the speed and one-handed reholstering capability of kydex with the comfort of leather." Comp-Tac does not make the MTAC. The are just selling it for Minotaur. If I misspoke in the video I apologize.
Good god the Retention on that holster sucks. i think you got a bad one. Or at least i hope you did i was looking at getting the Mtac but if the retention is like that. no way.
Although that retention makes me nervous, being an IWB holster, it should have much more tension by the added pressure of your body against the weapon. I'd like to see it on your belt if you could. Otherwise, I should have mine in the next few days, and I'll let you know.
I use the MTAC for a XD40SC and love it. I've also picked up the Mason-Dixon from bluegrass hybrid holsters and think it will be about the same but with an option to go OWB as well. Great holster and you can't go wrong with it.
thanks for the review. am in the process of getting my ccw and just purchased an mtac for my smith & wesson m&p .40. it's gonna take around 2 weeks to get it, but feel it may be the best out there after seeing your video review and reading what others are sayin. thanks
You can heat up the kydex and mold it for better retention...Put wet cloths over everything but the trigger part. Put your gun in the holster and once heated you can press your finger into the trigger guard area. After it cool it will stay that shape. Good Luck
Some of the retention from IWB hostlers comes from the gun against your body, so turning the holster upside down and shaking it is not an accurate test to check retention capabilities. Nice review.
Aright, now I get it. I thought you were advocating that some people were carrying SAO 1911's with the hammer down. I'm sure there are idiots out there doing that though.
I've got (2) MTACs, one for a Glock 19 and one for a Glock 30. I have found them to be by far the most comfortable IWB holster available and I've tried a lot of them, from the top names in the business. I have the standard clips because I feel they're stronger and secure the holster better. I agree the issue with HKs could be a serious issue that they should address. Comp-tac has been nothing but great to deal with in my experience. I highly recommend the MTAC.
well, I don't have anything to compare it to, but it is not much more than just bearable. It would be more comfortable if I wasn't concerned about damaging the J hooks that go over your belt. I try to sit without putting too much pressure on it so they don't bend. If I drive I usually just take the gun out of the holster and then there's no problems. It's easy to re-holster too. Hope this helps
Would you recommend using the USP .45 fullsize for conceal? I am thinking of just buying a compact instead though I already have a full size, just seems too big really to conceal then again i'm a pretty big guy.
I really want to get a subcompact pistol like a Glock 36 for full time concealed carry because I find that the full size USP is just to inhibiting in terms of what you need to wear to conceal it. If you wear button down shirts regularly, or you have a jacket you always wear it won't be so much of a problem. As many will tell you, you need to be comfortable enough that you never leave it at home.
I'm surprised a small guy like tom cruise was able to lug around a large handgun like the USP .45 in a IWB holster in the movie collateral. Then again it is hollyweird lol.
Good honest review. I have one for my S&W M&P and it doesn't display these problems.... I think they should take a second look at the fit of the holster for your particular gun to address the retention and safety issue (if they already haven't)
