  • This version makes me wanna snap my own neck. I was gonna compare this version to the wii version for a comparison video but i can't get anywhere in the sega CD version so that ends that video.

  • what do you press to get past the first screen, the drawbridge ?

  • Wow Franko, over 108,000 views. Great job.

  • my dad told me eo search this up he played this when he was a kid :D

  • still own a segaCD..but instead of this version,i got the 25th anniversary version with space-ace..great game(s)

  • I had this on sega cd..looking at it now wow that was not a great conversion.

  • Nice! I didn't know Dragon's Lair was for Sega CD! I might have to get it.

  • this is the same artist that did rockadoodle and thumbellina! thats wicked you don't see much of his work anymore.

  • Man, those are crappy graphics. :-/

  • @AgentCraig358 it is Sega CD though

  • @AbsentBlakoutx

Faggot knight? Did you miss the whole game where he's doing all this to get some pussy?

  • Walk down drunken memory lane!!

  • I hated this game so much I feel compelled now, 25 years later, to return to say this game is absolute shit and an example of putrid game design and the makers should have splinters shoved under their fingernails.

  • this is game would he AMAZING if it was remade

  • 0:32 Is it just me, or does Don Bluth recycle hairdos for his female leads? I mean, Daphne seems to have the same bangs/long ponytail look as Thumbelina, Goldie, and the animated version of Kira from Xanadu. And that's just naming a few characters.

  • frankenbush?

  • Fuck this game used to be sooooooo hard!!

  • I hate/loved this game sooooo much, I had it on my dsi and it kept me and my classmates unbored for months

  • i like that 70 s show and indeed he sounds like eric forman .....

  • Eric Forman!

  • How in the hell do you play this???

    It looks like a movie

  • @BIGTOAST75 thats the idea, the original game is played on a laserdisk.

  • @BIGTOAST75 you press specific buttons with no indication of what those are, in PERFECT timing OR YOU DIE!

  • halelujah for the eight way dpad man without it the game seems impossible

  • *Hears commentary*

    *Presses back button*

  • To be quite honest, I don't think I'd call this obscure since I think a lot of people knew about Dragon's Lair, but maybe that's just me.

  • Not just you. Dragon's Lair is far from being obscure if you know any arcade history.

  • How in the hell do you play tis game? I tried to play it but I cant even get past the damn draw bridge.

  • This guy sounds like Eric Forman from That 70s Show

  • 1:16

  • >>5:33

Why is Gantz chasing Dirk? doesn't it have carbon copies of dead people to hunt down its enemies for it?

  • does anybody know that before the nes game it was in the arcade it looked just like this but less fuzzy

  • @RossEStern Yes. Many people know that.

  • thank god i was starting to feel like people thought this game was a crappy nes game

  • i have this on my iphone and its awesome

  • This would be so much better without the narration.

  • According to Wikipedia, this is getting re-released for the Wii on disc format, as well as DSiWare and PSP..

  • i had this. it actually wasn't too bad for Sega CD. the backgrounds couldn't scroll or animate so there was stuff missing but the graphics were above average for Sega CD. i wish they could've done Time Gal or Cobra Command half as good.

  • I had it too. This was really the first true port of the original game. Up until then there was only lame nes and game boy games that just carried the name of Dragon's Lair, but not the spirit.

  • I bought this game on blu-ray. It's nice and crisp, this sega cd one don't look to bad. Just a little colorless, thanks to the system.

  • Anyone else think Dirk the Daring has a little Mr. Magoo in the expression on his face, or for those younger viewers Inspector Gadger? Like he don't know what is going on

  • There was another game like this, but it was released for the ps1. It had a little kid being chased by a dude with scissors.

  • that was called "Braindead 13"

  • @DaveMire dude you're awesome

  • I would like to become a giddy goon!!!

    LOL!

  • The Nintendo version of Dragon's Lair sucked big time, but then I like my games to be like the original arcade version.

  • that drawbridge scene reminds me of that scene from Willow

  • which are the best home ports of dragons lair? if someone can give me like a ranking that'd be nice.

  • looks like Another person Lost there Account Because of a Dragons Lair Video on YouTube' better Watch out' You Might be Next ???

  • @ogithreturns Oh man, why are they doing that? Who owns DL? I've got it on my Xbox Media Center and was thinking of recording it and uploading it, but if the bastards are going to get rid of it, there's no point :(

  • yea i Know' they Suck. 1 of my Accounts got Disabled over it Too )-:

  • @ogithreturns Sorry to hear that. They really suck big hairy balls. I can't imagine what they've got to gain by doing it. I'm not going to risk it. I could upload stuff on Dailymotion but... hardly anyone ever goes there and no-one ever bothers leaving comments, mainly because hardly anyone actually registers.

  • theres Allways Myspace.

  • Holy crap this game makes me feel like a kid again! Too many allowances were spent on that cabinet! Now that I'm back into gaming I might have to hunt down a sega genesis/cd and this game! THANKS FOR POSTING VIDS!!

  • the Last time i had a Dragons Lair Video on YouTube' it was Erased by the YouTube Staff & Then my Account was Erased? i Wonder Why ???

  • You mean Family Guy is just like it. Family Guy did not invent everything known to man, contrary to popular belief.

  • Family Guy doesn't invent anything-it's all just a bunch of references(some more obscure than others...) loosely tied to a plot. Sometimes the plot is all just one big reference.

  • from what i remeber this is a carried over version from the original arcade. in the original the only button was labled action.

  • I've recentoly been playing the 3D version. It seems to be suprisingly acurate to the Sega CD version in that all the monsters really seem like Don bluth characters.

In the 3D vetsion, the Giddy Goons are basically little more than hopping idiots.

  • WAYYYYYYY Better than the nes version.

  • that shit wasnt even playable on the nes! It was so bad.

  • yeah it's such a pitiful game with a trash ending. Why is it all the worst games have horrible endings? Striving to see the awesome ending would actually be good motivation to get through the shit. Simon's Quest is the only game I can think of that is horribly flawed but has a cool ending. (albeit horribly translated)

  • @Luigi84289

well if you don't know this is a port of the original arcade version and i'm totally agree with you the nes version was crap

  • @Luigi84289 have u ACTUALLY played this game?

  • I love you nineties gaming.

  • This game brings back a lot of memories. Played it soooo many times at the arcade I became a master at it. Managed to get through the whole thing without Dirk getting killed.

  • I remember watching my dad play this game. I tried it several years later and couldnt get past the drawbridge D:. I have not tried this game since then.

  • All I have to say is I want to be a giddy goon!

  • what a structuarlly unsound castle

  • i was thinking the same thing. i mean, how is the dragon supposed to maintain custody of the princess if his castle falls apart when someone enters it? not to mention all of the monsters seem to have such little concern for it, always breaking things

  • Hey,

just watched your vid and it really took me back.I always had such a hard time with that game and to see this far is just sweet. Thanks for posting.I am now gonna watch the second part.

  • Gotta say that is a big castle for Singe just to live in the treasure room.

  • I love Don Bluth's stuff. Does anyone know where I can finfd this game on DVD?

  • I'm willing to bet this is more or less a straight port of the DOS CD-ROM version that I had. Did the Sega CD version have an option to play the speech (pretty much just Daphne's 2 or 3 lines and the announcer at the start) in different languages? I still have the CD and upon examining it have discovered that the game only used like 100 MB or so! They had more than enough room to make the video quality better and not to mention leave in the scenes they mysteriously omitted! WTF is that about?!?

  • Did anyone hear that Don Bluth is trying to do a Dragon's Lair movie?

  • where did you read that? any sort of info would be apreciated :)

  • I remember reading it somewhere on from a magazine from 2007. A very interesting thing is that Don had been trying to do a Dragon's Lair movie since the day it became a success sometime in the 80's. I did read off of the Don Bluth website that the script of Dragon's lair is somewhat completed but Don is having trouble finding someone that can do the movie.

  • I heard about this. Honestly, I hope it works out like his old films did (Secret of NIMH & The Land Before Time are his two best films). And I hope that it becomes the best video game adaptation ever, because most video game movies aren't that good. But who can make a great adaptation better than the creator himself, right?

  • I would say Nimh is Don's masterpiece, although I am still angry there remaking it though. Normally that is true mainly because they never get the video game movies right, but I was mixed on the live-action movie of Max Payne. If there is one person I could think of who would make a better movie of DL instead of Don its Ben Hurst.

  • You funny.

  • I agree completely!

  • i remember when this game came out. i saw it at chuck e cheese. it was the first 50 cent video game.

  • Nice video :)

  • I remember seeing this arcade game as a little kid and being blown away by the cartoon like graphics. The problem for me was that it was impossible to play! I could never figure it out!

  • Haha, "If you would like to be a Giddy Goon."

  • I would very much like to be a Giddy Goon.

  • No matter what buttons I mash on that first screen, I can never get out of that drawbridge! >:(

  • When the snake things come toward you push the Action button, when you start to pull your sword out of your belt push up.

  • I'm doing that all the time, it never works.

  • Oh yeah, and I forgot to thank Frankomatic AGAIN for posting this!

I never got to see this much of the original Don Bluth animated arcade version because the game was an accursed quarter-devourer when I was little. It was like, IMPOSSIBLE to pass!

And screw the Nintendo version of this game. It was awful.

  • I LOVE YOU

  • yeah but did anybody ever beat it with blindfolded? i did, and get this? i never lose

  • I don't believe you! Prove it!

NOBODY at the arcade ever beat this hard ass game when I was little. It was sooo hard!

The damned effing game even had flashing arrows that would tell you what buttons to push and when to push them, and STILL nobody passed it.

  • well yeah i did, cause I've been playing this for years and even now. when my brother and my sister was watching me and i was sleeping but i could hear the level and the sound so yeah i was playing it and thought of the idea that i would play it in blindfold way but yeah sometimes the levels changed but my brother would let me know if it's a reverse level one or not? so yeah it's hard but once you've played it like a lots of Times, yeah it's possible.

  • I don't think that's something to be proud of...

I've heard of interned political dissidents getting more freedom than that!

  • This made me smile because I had this game. Sega CD (sigh) It was amazing technology at the time, even though mine broke after a few months.

    HAHAHA

1:42 "Next up...the 'Drink Me' room. Another extremely difficult room in which... you go out the door."

    That's hilarious.

  • The reason we watch Frank is to see him fail at gaming and then laugh at his comments. If you want to watch the scenes go look up a video walkthrough. This is a "lets play" and not a walkthrough.

  • 0:11 sonic the hedgehog

  • Hey Frank. Nice run; I remember I beat it once without dying, and put it down, saying "that's enough graininess and anal retentiveness with the timing as I can stand", and didn't play it anymore. Despite these things, the Sega CD version wasn't bad considering the graphical limitations. But yes, Space Ace for the Sega CD was horrid.

  • I remember playing this game at my friends house when I was a kid. Never saw the game again after that until now.

I could never get past the fucking drawbridge!!!!

  • You're lucky you know how to play this game, because I sure as hell don't!

I used up all of my lives- twice- on that drawbridge before I gave up and shut it off...

  • I have a version on PS2 but in 3d and I have also this version

  • You do excellent commentary, and give out solid advice about the glitches, tips, and history off the game. You should do more game walkthroughs !!

  • Got a perfect score on this back in the arcade days. Got to end with all lives, then got to very last move and suicided. Repeated for all lives until the last one to accumulate more points.

  • I'd rather NOT be a giddy goon thank you!!

I have a version of this for the PS2,but is slightly different.

  • I have yet to play a decent home version of this. I recently got the Blue Ray version which is full of delay and screen freezes. Funny how the laserdisc was the only format that could handle it

  • the laserdisc was actually not that bad of a format. the video wasnt bad and neither was the audio. to be honest, i rather like it more than the dvd

  • Spent so fkin much money on this crap

  • As a kid i though that this kind of technology back then was like the xbox360 today!! Very Challenging game. little to fast for my pace. thx for posting 5stars!

  • Pity he's awol for awhile due to a shitty computer

  • I played the sega CD port and it's not bad, just too picky on your movements, but it's otherwise decent

  • not to get into this argument, but how can you say if this game is good or bad, if you haven't played it before. I've played it. Its not bad, its just challenging.

  • the guy who responded is worse IMO

  • This game is VERY good. It will keep you occupied for hours trying to finish it. But, on a psychology note, youtubers' could care less if you "pipefit" or if you have "billion dollar babies". If that were the case, then your name should be "Jizwarrior". Play the game. Trust me, you won't be dissapointed.

  • Good game, looks no bad, but it will be sucks if you can't play it.

  • You dodge random stuff with the arrow keys and use the sword with space bar.

    Yes I do.

  • Nice job! I love listening to commentary.

  • The animator of the game by the way for anyone who didn't know was Don bBluth, who has made great animated movies such as The Land Before Time, All dogs go to Heaven, Thubelina, Anastasia ect, besides others. He's a great person!

  • i was thinking tat a disney person helped

  • this is Sega CD Verson, pc verson plain sucked but i heard this game going be ported on psp and other consoles for better resolution

  • The guy that created this game is also the guy who made some of the old disney movies (robin hood, i.e.)

  • Hello, Is your Sega CD Very grainy? I picked one up and it barely works and when it does it looks pretty bad. Debating if I should get a new system.

  • i wanna be a gitty goon lol

  • First time seeing this version.. not bad at all... the only thing that detracts is the Dithering technique they used... Which is part of the limitations of the hardware at the time.

  • the giddy goons sound like monkeys

  • everyone else could not pass the draw bridge and bitched about the Sega Chis gD version, but this guy is doing it.

  • he knows what to do, because the objects glow a light blue, and ur sappost to hit the arrow keys on ur dvd remote.

  • wow i used 2 HATE this game

  • HOW do you know what to do?

  • I'm beginning to question if this is really a video game of just a really big cutscene?

  • It's a bunch of movies and the outcome is determined by your button presses.

  • I want to be a giddy goon :)

  • I remember playing the arcade game and sucking bad. I thought it was hard.

  • this game scared me as a kid the way he would turn into a skeleton when he died and just the overall look of the game

  • God, I royally SUCK at this game. I can't even get past the first clip. What button do you have to press and at what time?

  • your good!!!!

  • god i actually played original arcade game ,ah good memories, im getting old lol

  • Two questions seeing how I said this before:

    Do you play WoW?

And if so, are you the first person that talks in the Leroy Jenkins' video? Because I swear you sound just like that guy.

    But thanks for showing this.

    CHEERS!

  • I'd actually like to see what all the cutscenes for the game Dragon's Lair is like...

I'm sure they're somewhere out there...

  • methinks braindead looked better

  • Braindead 13 came out years and years after this one did.

  • that would explain alot.

  • great vid man, love ur review, iv never played this game, but i love th animation. ^^

i think u can get this now on blue ray disc. i like this game!! i may get it! ^^

  • This game is actually pretty easy once you get the patterns memorized. I bought the 20th anniversary edition last month for my PC and It only took me three weeks to beat it. Like anything else it takes practice.

  • I used to love to watch my big brother play this game on our old computer all the time! :D

  • me too!! :)

  • i wish all fmv games were like this. i only see fmv games with live action.

  • I beat this game with my DVD remote control just to see if I could do it.

  • Now THIS is what im talking about :D. May space ace burn in gaming hell, amen

  • Wow, a Dragon's Lair video by someone who understands and can play Dragon's Lair. Kudos to you man.

  • Gaygoons rock!

  • where can i get the emultaor for this and the rom for this and dragon's lair 2 and space ace

  • u should do a playthrough of dragons lair 2

  • This game was about as exiting as PONG!

  • This is as exciting as pong..

  • How does the drink kill you?Turns you to a zombie?

  • You crumble into dust!

  • If you drink it, you crumble into bones.

  • I can still play this game on my Sega cd system. I beat the Sega version, but not the arcade version. I've also got Space Ace for Sega cd, but haven't beaten it yet.

  • Infinite continues?Cool!
