I hadn't seen this sketch for more than 20 years but I still remember so many lines from it. "Burmese maidens - in Todmorden?" Absolutely brilliant - but yes, so dark and sad, too...
Dark. Having worked in a nursing home, I can say there are old people who'd do anything for this much personal attention. Stephen Fry's patronising tone in this is actually very mild compared to what many are subjected to. And as for a room that size... well. Another excellent example of F&L's satirical edge.
"Acting up like I shouldn't wonder"... Still can't recover from that line. My favourite Fry & Laurie sketch I think, even though it's sadly not so far away from real life.
where the bloody hell can i get hot coacoa with heroine in it? for that matter where can i watch a woman urinate while being breastfed? Wheres me damn coacoa!?
I'm looking for another one. About hugh trying to pass a story on to stephen about someone who was riding a horse and fell off. I can't find it anywhere. Does someone know where it is?
@DutchMileyLover I found it on youtube by searching under "Fry and Laurie Marjorie's Fall." I hope you can find it, that one is one of my favorites from the show.
0:55, Hugh's hitting Stephen always cheers me up. And a nice change too! That's how patronising adults can be towards the elder, I think they captured it perfectly...
"...killing people and watching women urinate in opera houses, eating hamburgers in opera houses and drinking milk from the breasts of nepalese maidens..."
Seasons 1 and 2 of 'A Bit of Fry and Laurie' are available on DVD. This sketch is from the finale of Season 1. The 'Robert Robinsons', 'Rhodes Boysons', 'Hello Control', 'Engagement Ring', 'Irish Joke and Live Chicken', 'English Strawberries and Cream', 'I was standing right there and this guy...' and 'Hardware Store' sketches are all fantastic.
I was just thinking that! I think David Walliams ripped off stephen fry completely! That character of andy was totally there in his portrayal just now1 Even down to the clothes!
I was heartbroken when my video copy of this was torn to shreds (damn the obsolete machinery) but now I can enjoy it forever, in the comfort of my workplace. Thank you, yellowperil, you've made my megabyte.

Of course maidens giving milk are quite rare, but it's the dream that counts I suppose.

Ah, Hugh Laurie. Adept at portraying elderly desolation, too. And elderly drug-highs.

Thanks for posting this.
For reasons that remain unclear, my local PBS station showed seasons 1-5 of ABOFaL. This has always been one of my favorite sketches.

This is actually a fairly dark skit. It's funny, because it's awful on several levels.

The Burmese are quite a subject of interest aren't they:) Stephen, or I should say Lord Fry had the same accent in Mr.Burmie.
Cocoa with heroine, that ought to hit the spot!
Yettobefamous 4 years ago 2
I saw it in season 1, just as you said. Hilarious!
What kind of accent is Fry doing? It sounds a bit like the one he uses in a season 3 clip I watched here, called Mr. Burmie.
KAT65 4 years ago
I think it's just a made up silly voice, it's not an accent as such, just a voice to fit the character I think
yellowperil999 4 years ago
it sounds a hell of a lot like a upper calder valley accent, i come from there :D. and it aslo mentions todmorden, so i would say....

I ordered seasons 1 and 2. Which is this from? The other seasons are due out in late July.

Does it really surprise you that Little Britain ripped this off? Although apparently Andy is supposed to represent Andy Warhol, but there we go.
Anyway, Little Britain sucks.
