Lots of people "know a friend of a friend" who died. It's a way of gaining notoriety in a conversation. Keep pressing these people and you'll find they really didn't know the alleged victim at all.
That said I'm not claiming nobody died on 9/11, but the "thousands" figure is certainly an exaggeration, hence so many clearly manipulated memorial photographs.
