i like your 84 idi. i think it sounds great and the inside actually looked really good. way to keep that baby lookin good for its years. good truck and the powerstroke was nice too i would deffinatly drive one but love the early 80s Fseries trucks
Like the Powerstroke better than the IDI, But are the P stroke the best diesel Light duty truck engine Id beg to differ. Cummin's the way to go.. But I like powerstrokes to, Also I like ford better than dodge.
I'm an IDI man, myself. That 84 must have had the gauge cluster replaced because in 84, they didn't have tachs. It's a really nice truck with the banks, the lift, and I don't see any rust. The best thing about them is there are no ICP sensors, etc to worry about. Straight pipe the IDI and you will hear a world of difference. I have a few videos of mine with a straight pipe but I don't have a turbo yet. Still waiting to install my ATS 088.
IDI all the way. Mechanical simplicity without all those silly electronics to worry about. Granted, that does mean less power.... but it'll still get the job done, and if it does decide to break, it's a helluva lot easier to work on. Both are great trucks though!
the IDI has a much higher compression ratio than the powerstroke if thats what your talking about. The injection timing on the idi is much retarded than on the powerstroke. Powerstroke had a failing ICP sensor causing those hard starts.
lol you guys r crazy. LOVE the turbo from a straight piped powerstroke. but will never put down the idi. ive had both, 93 and a 97, both turboed. @FANADICALCOWHEAD which ever you go with, i highly doubt youll be dissapointed
I will say my opinion, but I am biased, I love the sound of the old IDI, I own an 89 F350, and it's the best motor I've ever had.
I unfortunately discovered I have a bad IP (Injection pump) and had considered selling it, but we ultimately went to keep it.
I've owned a PSD, and those as well, are GREAT motors, but the IDI just has a bit more grunt, while you can't expect speed outta your IDI, you can pull a house off it's foundation lol.
I love the sound of the old IDI's. Like FANADICALCOWHEAD said, the "big block V8 sound" is great. I might be a little bias though too; I've always loved the SC long-bed '80-86 Fords. :)
They are different but I like the sound of both engines quite a lot. (Find me a diesel I don't like the sound of!) One thing for sure though is that when you open up the exhaust in an IDI you can get an extremely badass V8 sound. 88 7.3 IDI/Navistar F250 4x4 and a 93 Dodge Cummins 5.9 12 Valve here. Both very much stock and very clean.
The only thing that sounds better than a 94-98 Powerstroke is a big CAT purring. Also the comment that the IDI sounds like a big block V8 makes sense because it IS... but so is the Powerstroke.
Personally I think the IDI sounds superior. I grew up around my Dad's 6.2L diesel Silverado and I feel like the IDI has a very similar sound. Plus the IDI has more of the "Big block v8" sound rather than a commercialized rig sound. Both great trucks though. Just out of curiousity what is a better buy? Powerstroke or IDI?
@FANADICALCOWHEAD I also enjoy the sound of the IDI diesel. Each has there ups and down when it comes to which is a better buy. The IDI is cheap to work on and fix. Injectors usually are around $180 for all 8 compared to several hundred dollars for the PSD. Injection pumps are fairly inexpensive compared to a HPOP on the PSD. A Turbo'd IDI is similar to power output of a 1st gen PSD. With the PSD you have more capability for power, chips, and upgrades. I love driving the 5spd idi around...
the newer truck has a lauder engine but just some info for you and anyone who reads this, the california edition 7.3 powerstroke for the 9th gen trucks had sequential fuel injection which reduced the engines knock. all other trucks that were not intended to be driven in california have that sharp knock because it was still a single shoot event. up untill the later years came along.
@slowpoke560 I suppose my powerstroke would have alittle more refined sound if I had some form of exhaust on it. When the stacks come I'll re-shoot for comparison.
@fordxtreme2 yeah oh and i just realized i used the wrong choice of words in my first comment, when i said sequential fuel injection i was referring to the split shot. but yeah, you got two awesome trucks haha, i also have an older style like urs, mines 86 and my dad has the california edition newer 7.3 1997 last year for that body style, but i cant wait until mines running, bought it as a project and for now its going to stay the 6.9, now as for a turbo, well i gota see... money gettin low lol
what are you running for a clutch? ive been trying to find an aftermarket one for a 6.9 bt cant seem to find any, cause i really want to go Banks or Hypermax turbo Im really leaning more towards getting a 6.9 since their alot more of them in my area than 7.3 idi's
@sexyman1130 It does. Theres some problem with the powerstroke at this moment. I haven't had the time to diag it. I've had some problems with it shutting off when its cold, n once when I was driving. Kinda makes me believe CPS.
@sexyman1130 theres no problem with the turbo diesel as fordxtreme2 says, its because the older trucks had no turbo, so the compression ratio was higher, so it starts right up. the new trucks with the turbos have lower compression ratio (once turbo spooled up then it adds up to the higher compression) and for a diesel to run you have to have high compression. so when you crank over the turbo diesel, that turbo isnt putting any boost into the engine so its a longer start to build up the heat.
i like your 84 idi. i think it sounds great and the inside actually looked really good. way to keep that baby lookin good for its years. good truck and the powerstroke was nice too i would deffinatly drive one but love the early 80s Fseries trucks

Sounds crazy but it would be awesome to have an idi with a short bed and crew cab.

@TheRedneck1463 4" lift springs on the front + extra 1-1.5" from the D60. Back has a block :(. The front does ride a bit taller than the back.
