It's a particular genre native to the Scottish Highlands, called piobaireachd (pibroch). My understanding is that it's usually ceremonial in nature, often played funerals and other "event" commemorations. The laments, or funeral dirges, are very moving & haunting. I can see how growing up with that music would leave its sensibilities in your bones.

I think that if Stephen Fry is probably the quintessential British Gent, surely Annie Lennox is the female equivalent! She's the most beautiful, talented, natural, soulful person ever and it's only her (entirely unjustified) self-doubt that stops her being absolutely perfect.... Sigh! If you read this Ms.Lennox, thank you for raising the bar for the human race!
