i am currently learning with RED to become a driving instructor. i have been to 4 in car training sessions, been shown a few things and have now been told i cannot get another in car lesson untill i have sat my theory test. that i dont have a problem with but what do have a problem wih is the fact that in 5 lessons i am meant to be able to sit a advanced driving test and pass....2 hours of driving and only 5 minors allowed. this is NOT enough driving lessons to get you up to the standard req'd.
@craigyboyuk89 Yes I agree with you about the driving test part 2. You will have to do a lot of practicing I'm afraid. 5 lessons is no where near enough as you really need regular feedback on your drive. Test is about 60 to 75 minutes maximum 6 minors.
I bet that guy saw red when he realised it wasn't quite as simple as that. That school must have drove him round the bend. Must be totaly tyred with them now!
I trained with the aa and joined after I qualified. I had one to one tuition at the times that I chose which was great. I obviously paid for the course but when I joined the aa they gave me that fee back in discounted franchise fees. I'm earning ok but spending too much on petrol so need to make my area smaller but that's up to me. As far as I've heard, the franchise fee seems to be pretty reasonable. Hope this helps.
Red driving school/LVG went bust last month owing over £6 million pounds so you wont get any money back. However, the Red brand was sold by the receivers to another company called driving results limited and they are offering to complete any training outstanding from the old Red company but any claims for refunds or will not be honoured. For more details see Anti-Red driving school Facebook group.
red is the worst ever driving school in uk and a big liar because it would cost you more than they say to be come instructor and they traine 4 people at the same time but they charge you same price as one to one and is not recommended.
The BBC have also featured Red in connection with its less than truthful selling methods see how an ex-RAF guy cought them RED handed, search youtube for "red driving school bbc xray" also see the Anti-Red driving school facebook group for other examples by searching facebook for "Anti Red Driving School Instructor Training LVG LTD"
I'm an instructor in cambs and have never made £30k! sure if you can get the work to do 40+ hours a week you might but thats a big IF! your business might make £30k in a year but take of the francise and fuel and you'll be lucky to make £15k! make no mistake insructing isn't the job if you want to get rich. also you might think40 hours a week isn't bad but each lesson is 2 hours you then need time to get to the next this is time when you don't make any money so a 40h week would be 50+ hours.
Absolutley spot on. I will also add: cancellations, cost of fuel, depreciation if you have your own car, leasing costs, franchise fees (if you go that route). Control your own hours? Most people want lessons in the evenings and at weekends. Remember that at 8:00 at night on a cold wind swept and wet training estate in Winter. There ARE up-sides of course. Thinking about doing this? Do your research like any new business venture. Maximise income & keep overheads low. Red = v.expensive option !!!
I had to cancel due to being refused by the DSA. Red did not give me back my money as promised within 30 days and made up a new excuse near enough every day for 3 months. They never sent me any letters or retuned any of my phone calls. Now 7 months on from enroling they have told me that the old company LVG has gone into administration and to deal with the administrators. Thats after i had to drive down to Brighton to see some one as i could speek with any one. NEVER use RED!! Stay away!!!!
@msben64 All I'd say to anyone thinking of doing this is think long and hard about the commitment required and that you have to factor in time for all the self-employed paraphenalia
i'm doing my part 1 theroy test preperation now and i have found Red Driving School very helpful through this prosses if i've had to call on them for any help. If that continues into part 2 and part 3 i think i will have no problems passing my instructor test.
im at part 3 with RED and happy with the service, so far. the instruction i just recieved for part 3 was deep and intensive, for me anyway. there IS a lot to learn and take in, but once qualified its up to you to sell yourself, you dont HAVE to go with RED, but i intend to even though 4 cars have started in my area since i began the course when there was none!!
Also I dont see why it's not possible to earn somewhere near £30,000 (Working a 40 hour week). Once qualified I'd pay a franchise fee of £175 per week, plus my petrol, about £100?? The car belongs to Red, so if theres any repairs or services I take it to a Vauxhall dealer and Red provide me with another car so I don't lose any customers. I'm not sure if I'm missing anything but so far as I can tell Red are reliable and at the moment I intend to join Red once Im qualified.
@Rebekah270984 40 hours of driving lessons is not a 40 hour week for the instructor.Remember the travelling time between lessons, usually 20-30 mins between each lesson, even if the pupils all lived close together you would still want a few minutes rest between lessons for toilet/rest/drink. Quite common to do a lesson then be back at home for few hours. Working most weekends to bump the hours up,25-35 hours is what you will find many instructors doing. 15-20k is more realistic earnings.
@munnsey I agree with you that you have to allow for time between lessons, but you can work 40 hours teaching per week and it is possible to earn around £30,000. Money won't fall into your lap, you have to put in in the hours and the work. In the case of an instructor, we have to allow the travelling time, but that's part of the job. There are also things you can do to cut down travel time, such as 2 hour lessons, or make sure all your lesson are in the same area each day.
I am currently training with Red and I'm about to take my part 2 test. So far I haven't had any problems them. They have provivded me with all the trianing material I need and I easily passed my part one. Any lessons I booked have been taken and I find the trainers very good. They all seem as if their only interest is for me to pass my test. I can't say about geting customers yet, but thye have guaranteed me any number of customers I want, and I can also get my own customers outside of that.
I have trained with red and am about to start teaching on a trainee licence....cant fault them at all.....training has been 1st class, passed my part1 and part2 both 1st time and all meetings and inductions have all been very professional.....not everyone is cut out for this proffesion and the guy in the video clearly went chasing the pound notes before doing his research!
@TheBenny1986@Tonybrs1 With any of these things you have to put the work in. Remember the old addage "if something seems too good to be true, it usually is" or perhaps "do not be misled into believing high earnings are easily achieved". However three things seem commonly overlooked: 1-Becoming a driving instructor is not CHEAP; 2-Becoming a driving instructor is not QUICK; 3-Becoming a driving instructor is not EASY.
Me again. The instruction that i have received is excellent. I think that because Red is the new kid on the block, that there will be some "slagging off".
My instructor told me that it is best too go indepentant, but if your car breaks down, you lose money while it is in the garage. Also you don't have support i.e booking, stationary etc....
The bloke should have done his home work, before signing on the dotted line
I did, but, they did lie about the availablity of leesons during the adi part 2. I kicked up stink and managed too get a leeson every 2 weeks.
As iam aware, Red have do some restructuring. Helped by the ITV programme.
Some companies say that they can do the course alot cheaper, but you are tied in for 12- 18 months after you pass your ADI part3 Also they charge you very high francise fees i.e £300- £400 a week.
Red aside, I can't believe that guy thought he could just turn up and pass the course. If he was rolling back and had a number of car control problems, surely he must have realised that he needed work on his driving. If he wanted to be an ADI he would have put in the practise and become one. Also, why didn't he do some research before paying all that money up front. Can't work it out.
Hi - I saw this clip recently - also discussed their arrangements with a friend who nearly got sucked into the web. He went to one of their 'open days' if thats the right name-he came away having signed a finance agreement for a £3500 or so loan to pay for his training. Not bad when he has no obvious evidence of income other than the dole! If the banks were so quick to lend money then the housing market would take off big time!
i am a qualified instructor and have been for 15 years and people always ask me about recommending a company for adi training and my advice is always stay away from reds save your money their training is terrible ...the standard of their instructors is also terrible .......please don't waste your money ...... there are company's out there who will train you for £999 to a better standard ...
I trained with BSM about six years ago. They were much more open and honest about how much you can expect to earn and their training was a hell of a lot better.
Now, I am an independent instructor. I'm earning a reasonable living, but have to do a lot of work to attract new customers. Although I love the job, I wouldn't recommend starting up right now to anyone.
I'm wondering to train with BSM and once you trained with them, could you give me some advises, please? It is really true that you can make up to 30K or is just bullshit?
Vera if you want to train as a driving instructor first don't do it with BSM or RED, second i'm a driving instructor but i'm looking for a job, there are louds of instructors out there who they keep droping the prices. Have a look on the internet and you'll see lessons from 10 pounds per hour. think twice but it's very costy as well

Its unrealistic to think you will earn £30K a year with the amount of expenses.
Petrol/Diesel
Insurance
Tax
Maintenance
Unless you are teaching a high amount of learners its pritty much impossible to earn that kind of money.
