I thought it was sad Dean threw the amulet in the trash, but really what reason did he have to keep it at that point? As for the people claiming he didn't see Sam's perspective: this episode showed neither did Sam ever consider Dean's . Hell, all his memories were about getting away from his life, from his dad. He didn't even seem to think of Dean. It's indifference that hurts way more than hate. All Sam saw was how wrong John did, but never how hard Dean tried to provide sth resembling family.

This scene breaks my heart. After seeing Sam's version of Heaven, Dean is distraught and following Cas's comment about his amulet being worthless, he trashes it. I really wanted Sam to reach in and grab it and keep it for Dean. But I don't think he did. And according to Kripke we won't be seeing the amulet again, but it was supposed to make a guest appearance on One Tree Hill ;)

I'm not saying it's Sam's responsibility, and yeah, I know that Dean has been overbearing and overprotective of Sam. However, tt's not a one-way deal. Yeah, Dean is more family oriented, but both brothers have repeatedly said and shown that they would do anything for each other. The flashbacks in Swan Song showed them being incredibly close since childhood. So Dean realize that Sam's BEST memories excluded him would hurt. That's all i'm saying.

The last scene has to be one of the the lowest point in all of SPN series. Can't believe Dean threw the amulet away in front of Sam. I'm a fairly hard hearted person myself but that actually caused pang in my heart. Damn you SPN writers!

Dean repeatedly fails to realize that Sam is an individual, not an extension of himself. Dean's demand on Sam's familial love and loyalty as an all-or-nothing deal is unrealistic and cruel, symbolized by him throwing alway the amulet.

He threw it away because he's given up. this whole season we've seen him lose hope bit by bit and him throwing away the amulet is just him finally saying that he's done.

Dean was being passive/aggressive when he dropped the amulet, knowing Sam was watching , and was really trying to hurt Sam. The amulet was given to Dean as proof that Sam trusted Dean more than he trusted John at a time where the only people he had been taught to trust were John and Dean. I have a feeling the amulet won't return until Dean trusts and accept Sam as Sam, not as Dean's ideal.

Something that bugged me about their time in heaven - with all the bull that they had been going through do you ever wonder the reasons the memories that they experienced in heaven were done by the angels to break Dean? It's almost as if the first scene was supposed to encourage him of the bond that he and Sam had but then the next scenes were specifically meant to break that bond for both of them?

Oh poor boys. I feel really bad for Sam here and in the end of this season in general because Dean is giving up on saving the world, on Sam, on everything.

At the same time I cant be too pissed at Dean though. He's not purposefully being mean, he just cant take it anymore. Since s.2 he's been "tired" and that was way before hell and everything but he's still been the one holding everyone up, just like he's always held his family up, even though he's falling apart; he's at his breaking point.

I was so unexplainably pissed at Dean at the end, I mean no matter how 'useless' it was in Cas' task, it should mean somethig for him. Sam got tat for their father, but when he dissapointed them, again, he gave it to Dean because e was the one person he could always count on, and you don't throw something like that away. "you can't do this to me" they are both resisting together and if Dean gives up what is sam suppose to do? he cant say yes to lucifer. i mean if Dean throws in the towel hes just giving into heaven but sam doesnt have an easy way out.

@blissfullycat02 Dean was justified, though. Sam didn't have a single memory of him on Heaven, while the first happy memory Dean had was simply of MAKING SAM HAPPY. That hurts, you know. It's like realizing the person you do everything for may not really give a damn (like Cas and God, hence the parallel). When Cas says the necklace is worthless, Dean takes it on his own way. Sam broke his heart, even if it wasn't his intention. It was obviously painful for the both of them.

However it could be possible that Sam's happiest moments are with Dean right now as opposed to when they were growing up. I wish they would have at least showed a good memory like the Christmas memory they had when drinking egg nog. That would have been nice to see. :-D

@blissfullycat02 I think that's really unfair. I think Dean was so unbelievably heartbroken that he couldn't see where Sam was coming from. For Dean, the one relationship that means more to him than anything is his relationship with Sam. And then for him to realize that not only did Sam's favorite memories not involve him, but also showed him being happy with other families and getting away from his. I'm not saying that Sam was wrong, but you really have to think about how heartbroken Dean was.

@lexi219 Dean has a habit of throwing hissy fit every time Sam's life wasn't what Dean wanted it to be. It's almost a normal reaction since Dean is more of a father to Sam than a brother. Still, Dean rarely empathize with Sam or see things from his perspectives, if he did he would have understood why Sam wanted one normal Thanksgiving meal or why he ran away from a revenge-filled drunken father and a life of monsters to find solace in a dog or daring to want to go to college.
