I bought both an LED and CCFL backlit LCD and up close the CCFL has much better color, but my LED display is much thinner... Should you go for performance or panel thickness???
I love my u2711, finer dot pitch than the 30" and that's to be honest what counts other than colour. backlight could be ever so slightly more even though but here's me waiting for LED to mature in screens. I develop LED lighting systems, I know they're already capable, but monitor usage is not a main target market for most manufacturers thus the tech is a little behind.
look at the colours on that Dell monitor! black is actually black, not a reflection, red is so much more vibrant.
people want LED backlit monitors due to marketing gimmick. but what they don't realise is high quality CCFL backlight is actually better for image quality. Apple LED display only able to display about 80% of monitor colour space (aka NTSC Colour Gamut), while Dell can display over 100% of NTSC colour gamut.
For lighting tech I disagree; leds have killed fluro and stomped it into the gutter. Check out spectral power distribution graph to see what I mean. Fluro is big irregular peaks and troughs (althought can attain a high CRI number), led is a smooth double curve. Much higher true CRI than fluro, leds are up to 93 CRI.@2700K without the visibly lumpy colour response.
@migeru29 Other H-IPS Monitors: HP LP2475w (Somtimes declared as S-IPS but that's wrong) LACIE 526 EIZO SX2462WFS EIZO SX2462W EIZO CG245W EIZO CG303W EIZO CG243W NEC 2690WUXi2 NEC SpectraView Reference 3090 NEC Spectraview 2690 NEC SpectraView 3090 ... I'm sorry did i miss somthing ?!
@TVperson1 Well, technically you can use a Apple monitor with a PC, but that Imac is a complete computer system and thus not meant to be hooked up to anything else. Apple does also sell that monitor seperately...
a) On those models, you could use target display mode, which would allow you to use a PC with the in-built iMac screen. Although incidentally, the iMac is a computer, not a standalone monitor.
You could use their Cinema Display with a PC if you really wanted to, assuming your GPU had a displayport out.
@TVperson1 I'm not at all getting mixed up, with the right cable, you'd still be able to connect them - i.e. mini displayport to standard displayport - which you can get from monoprice and other cable folk, it's just a different implementation of the same standard.
I suppose you're also annoyed by the fact that there are standard, mini and micro USB connections?
U27 is a nice display made for professional use (accurate color reproduction, big workspace (cad etc..)) . It's a waste if it's used for gaming, as it's massive resolution only decreases 'frames per second' performance.
Apple CD uses H-IPS with LED and GLOSS finish. It is an misunderstanding.
Both of this displays have very small pixel and will be tiering for everyday office use. If you assume you will enlarge icons and text - why not buy LCD with smaller resolution straight away?
Higher resolution is much better for my eyes, text size is even smaller with less fatigue... go figure.
As for gaming, motion blur is a little noticeable (as any lcd screen, I grew up on good CRTs...) but the resolution and colour is amazing. res helps you resolve things from further away, colour helps you distinguish. to be honest other than extremely fast fps i think IPS screens could give an advantage over TN in many games for these reasons alone.
I'm not sure whether you are talking about U27 or imac.
Anyway - sometimes you use screwdriver and sometimes socket.Spending extra money on H-IPS that is gonna have lag and ghosting in games comparing to TN is pointless.I would rather recommend buying bigger screen for gaming than 27".
Text and icons...27" 2560 x 1440 have smaller pixel size than 30" 2560 x 1600 and smaller pixel size than 24"/26" 1920x1200. I use 26" 1920x1200 display and I have fonts and icons set on 107%...
@Misyu44 I have u27 and have had some good time photo editing and testing out a the equivalent mac panel, you see everything behind you in the reflection.
I Agree, a good tn or even high end crt is best for heavy gaming, but as a compromise between general usage an occasional gaming, i'll take the ips every time. I just can't go back to tn colour now :( Games are more surreal on ips.
Bigger screen, depends on distance, end of the day its res + dot pitch + colour + distance that does it for me.
They both have the same resolutions, the Apple display has an LED backlight. They both have 60hz. Apple does not have HDMI though (the apple screen on the left is actually an all in one computer) the Dell does. One big difference is that the Apple iMac screen has a 12ms response time (same goes for the apple 27" LED external monitor) and the Dell has a 6ms response time. Its not to crucial, just can make a bit of a difference in gaming.
The U2711H has a broader colour gamut - adds considerably to the vibrancy in games. This is why the reds on the video probably look more intense on the Dell, but do bare in mind what you see is limited by your own screen.
They both look great, although what i have found with macs is the contrast is crap, i myself have the 21.5 imac, i would be interested to see how the U2711 looks like connected to the mac.
Great setup, im planning to get this, but instead of the iMac 27, im gonna get an 8 core Mac Pro with the new 27 inch LED Display (which is coming out soon)
@gregnmac Lol, probably between the 24" and 30" prices, even high possibly. Its just like an enlargement of the 24" LED display. With iMac 27 Size and resolution.
@migeru29: Only? Maybe in this exact size and resolution, but H-IPS is widely used.
Also the contrast ratio you mentioned is dynamic contrast ratio and it is absolutely useless spec. Constast contrast ratio spec is 1300:1. If this monitor gets close to that 1300:1, then it is really good result.
Can you get a more detailed video on the U2711 monitor plz? Like Close ups and different angles! That will probably be the 1st detailed video on this monitor on the Tube if you decide to do it. That is an epic monitor!
How can you compare them in a 720p video when both monitors output at a resolution well over 1080p. Idiots....
