Such a great album! I'm so sad that her newer stuff is just not good. Which I hate to say, but is true. I respect that she is "growing and changing" and therefore so does her style. But she used to really f!@#ing rock! Now I can't hardly sit through her newer stuff:-( She has to realize this, doesn't she?
Does everyone remember that first time, that exact moment when, after hearing several of her songs on someone's CD that you just knew you had to meet her, had to at least see what she looked like, and then you saw a photo? And she was so "it," so white hot, and you thought, "Holy God, I'm in love. I'm lost." I'll always remember that one moment. I still get chills fifteen years later.
Somewhat prophetic don't you think? In that she achieved her goal in real time. That is, being mesmerizing while in the act of trying to define it. You're mesmerized by her ability to create a state of consciousness.
Brilliance in music is when it works on many levels, like this.
Out of the primordial stew, the Universe was deft enough to organize itself into a item such as Liz Phair. Unfortunately it also organizes itself into assholes like Stalin, Hitler, and Ted Bundy. At least we get Liz and musical acts like the Beatles, the Stones, and many more. Hooray for the Universe!
I definitely dig the video and she's cool as hell. EIG is in my top 5 all-time along with the other Exile. It's human nature to compare a thing with a thing. But enough with judging everything she does with EIG. She had to evolve just like everyone else. LIfe experiences are different at 23 than they are in your 30's. If everyone compared everything that the Rolling Stones did with EOMS all their other records would fall short. Bottom line, she rocked after that. CHristgau is the greatest.
Ah, the brillian Exile in Guyville album - which could easily make the curriculum of any Women's Studies 101 class across America's academic landscape. Too bad it was all downhill for Liz Phair after that. Let's face it, she tried to be the next Britney and the moment she did, her music became completely disposable.
This album sucks. I have the lion king soundtrack. Its much better than this filth. Where is the family friendly music??. I want music my kids can smoke pot and have sex to. This isn't it. I'll just buy them some zappa records. They prob like that much better

She wore these amazing green leather pants at a show at the 9:30 Club once. I have not forgotten.

This album got so much hype, especially for the lyrical content, but the vocals are so buried in the mix, you can't make out a word she sings!

@ausgang Yeah, it's called "lo-fi" for a reason.

Probably the climax of that Great first album of hers...
I'm pretty sure it's track 9...RIGHT in the middle...simple, hard blues track.
A real litmus test for whether you're REALLY hearing her voice and liking it...
Love it.
