  • The windshield in the smart didnt even break and it also out-performs ALOT of other vehicles as far as saftey goes....you would be suprised. Watch the video on "Tridion saftey cell." thats the cage the fortwo has, pretty interesting to say the least.

  • cool clip thanks for sharing ..

  • I bought my first smart car 4 months ago and unfortunately I was rear ended in a crash last month, I was stopped at a red light and the Ford Mustang did not stop, I was thrown through the intersection and up hill.. I walked away with only a bruise, the mustang was in way worse shape then my smart! It was still called a Total Loss, just bought my replacement car yesterday, another Smart. Thank u for building such a safe car, it protected me when I needed it most! Smart Cars are awesome!!!!

  • Der beste Beweis. Ein Smart ist so sicher wie eine E-Klasse. Ich bin Stolz auf meinen Smart.

  • ouch! my legs!!

  • smart is a sister company of Mercedes. so its sure that the crashtest of the tiny smart will happen with a huge mercedes..

  • "smart" cars are for DUMB people

  • and what cars are for smart people like you???

  • ones that dont have dumb names

  • I guess that you can loose your legs.... or at least have serious injuries...

  • This is also the first generation smart fortwo (450). The second gen. (451) or USA model is a little bigger than this one.

  • If you wanna see some real life wrecks and their owners testimonial then go to "safe and smart" dt com.

  • Just go read their stories. These cars actually hold up pretty good. Hey maybe one day with the way things are looking now everyone will be "REQUIRED" to own something like this.

  • grande smart

  • These cars are very rigid and that is great except they have to crumple area. So if a pickup hits you your going to be intact but your going to go from whatever speed your traveling to reverse going whatever speed the car that hit you was going so it will cause massive internal damage.

  • Every Smart car crash video shows it being it offset on the front driver side never dead on wonder why?

  • The reason you see a lot of offset crashes and less head-on crashes is because you are more likely to hit a car offset than head-on in the real world. Both vehicles would have faired far better, actually, in a head-on crash due to more of each car's various crumple zones being able to absorb more energy.

So, really, it's more impressive to fair well in an offset crash test than head-on crash test.

  • No it's not. In an offset crash, the car is able to absorb energy by rotating around the other car. In a head on, the car must absorb all energy directly.

Off set may be more typical, but it's far easier for a car to look strong after is passes off much or the crash energy to rotation.

The Smart cars are strong, but not what I call safe.

  • This type of accident also only accounts for less that 1% of all wrecks.

  • not true. in a head on, the energy of the collision is absorbed on the whole front of the car meaning that the energy is dissipated over a larger area than if it we're offset. ie, the energy would travel symetrically down each side of the crumple zone. an offset collision is making 1 side of the car work much harder to absorb the energy.

  • lets see it take on a humvee

  • id like to see one of these hit by a peterbuilt pullin a load of steel

  • see that little lag in 2.09 that is where they took the one with the squashed legs out and put a new one in^^

  • Magnifique. le pare-brise ne se casse pas !

  • HUMILIATION

  • smart gegen nen w140 B6 wäre doch mal was^^

  • i would really like to see a head on collusion with a smart car and a suburban

  • The Suburban would, like most high SUV's, simply flip and injure the driver even mroe than a normal car

  • ya i know but it would still be interesting to actually see

  • lol i drive a suburban.. i'd love to roll over one of these things. to terribrad, it wouldnt flip over, I had a similar accident in april 07 with a civic because the woman driving it swerved in my lane... and I totaled her car. Me? nothing, I was wearing my seat belt...

  • the smart car is actualy very good in crashes its bulit around a cage its designed so that in a crash the energy is distrabuted around the cage so all the plastic etc flies off this the energy of the crash is not affected the key drivers compartment and every one lives check the 5th gear crash test of the smart car you can see it at crash at 70 mph and do better then most other cars

  • The test is rigged. The large Benz has a generous "crumple zone" that absorbs the impact. What if TWO SMARTs crash, and none has an crumple zone?

Or what if it crashes agains a pole, or an older car/truck with no crumple zone?

It's much better than a motorcycle in most situations, except in the few cases where you could go around and avoid the crash altogether.

  • Exactly. The Smart's crumble zone IS the other car.

  • To light4darkness.

...Or if you live in Finland and you can only afford to 10 year old Toyota Corolla? It is a fact that avg car age in Fin is around 10 years.

  • the legs of the dummy were crushed that's why it isnt shown. In US tests the car only got 3 stars for frontal crash.

  • That is impressive.

  • such a waist of a merk

  • i saw on the news this morning that the smart car failed the frontal crash test

  • I know the smart cars are very strong on a frontal car crash and rear crash but what about getting hit on the side by a truck? That door is the persons only safety, and it is so thin. Also, the door reaches the whole side of the car and if s truck hits the side, that car door would smash the person flat.

  • 5 stars on side in american testing... actually seems to be its strong point!

  • not even a suburban will fare well against a truck, the fact is the smart car is pretty much indestructible. what you have to worry about is hitting ridged stationary objects, because the crumple zone is like 6 inches. it is supposed to activate the crumple zones on other cars, but trees don't really have those.

  • Yeah, just stay awake and sober and try not to hit the trees or lamp posts. Gotcha.

  • I'm looking to buy a smart car, mostly for the size, looks and fuel efficiency. Since I'm young, and not planning on getting kids in a long time, I won't need a larger car. I do wonder about how fun it is to drive a car like this since I've only driven mostly large family cars and full-size sedans.

  • It's fun enough, its pretty much a kart for its handling, not too powerfull naturally but still not too bad on performances.

Also the cabrio is a pleasure :)

  • The windsheild doesnt even break!!!!!

  • Already thousands of them sold all over Europe, this car has never had the reputation to bee unsafe. It was rated 3/5 stars at EuroNcap crash test that is quite good. The new Smart (2007) that's sold in the USA has 4/5 stars, that is excellent. Check the official EuroNcap site.

  • can you say "wheres my legs?!"

  • i wonder to have smart

  • It may look safe at 40mph,but no one will be alive in a crash at 70mph.

  • not many people crash at 70 in real life

  • And not many people will survive a crash at 70mph, no matter what car you drive.

  • does the smart even go 70 mph lol?

  • Scary but they actually go 95mph

  • i actually saw a video where a tuned smart beated a ferrari, forgot the link, o well, ill find it. O ya, wasnt smart made by mercedes? or dodge?

  • Yes it is a branch of mercedes. Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep divorced Mercedes after they developed horrible transmissions for Chrysler vehicles.

  • yeah they also put a horrible transmission in this car.... only complaint!

  • It wasn't a tuned Smart, it had a whole other engine that came from a Suzuki hayabusa. I think its a 1100cc engine and it makes a smart car do 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. Look up Smart Diablo.

  • Even in a larger vehicle at 70 mph, the human body can't absorb this much energy. The seatbelt and air bag will stop you, but your organs (your heart) will continue to move, and this will cause what is known as a aortic tear. You bleed to death in seconds internally. In most collisions, people see them comming and can brake enough to get down to a lower speed before impact. These test are done at an average speed. (Not of driving, but when most collisions occur.)I'd like to see the dummies legs.

  • Yes the impact a body can obsorb is only so much. That is why many people believe bigger is safer, BUT, with newer cars(i wont say older ones) they have better frames and are better engineered to absorb the impact before it gets to you. Old cars people would say "i got rear ended and it didnt even dent the back of my car!" and think thats a good thing. They fail to mention the whiplash and neck problems they had the rest of their life. Cars are now made to die FOR people not instead of people.

  • well, take two modern crumple zones that are both superb. i would still take the longer one as it's preferable to have more car crushing for you.

  • @zmass i disagree....the frames now a days are made way worse, the metal is way more flimsy therefore people are more likely to get trapped. Ever heard of the golden hour? from the second a trauma happens that person has an hour to make it to the operating table. if 30-45 mins of that is spent cutting him/her out of the car. They are more likely to die. Older cars are way better built. Car companies are worried about saving money, not people.

  • @fighterpilot553

Safety is much better nowadays then it was back then.

    Here´s a nice example:

Crashtest Chevrolet Malibu 2009 gegen Chevrolet Bel Air 1959

  • y la puerta abrio!

  • Ha ha I have Samrt :D

  • love it enough to spel it right

  • i wonder what happened to the dummys legs :P

  • lol

  • Oh I know! [sarcasm]I would much rather die and keep my legs than break my legs and live![/sarcasm]

  • Your legs would be fine since your feet don't go past the side mirror.

  • as if the smart car didn't get as much damadge u would think the small car with no bonit would get destroyed lol nice video anyway

  • i think the smart's drivers would be stunned with an impact like that...the harder is the car, the more impact you will receive..

  • a year ago, there was a smartcar test video on the web showing one travelling into a solid concrete 'half-wall' at 70mph. the car's body panels were trashed, but the tridion safety cell survived intact - and so did the driver and the passenger [live adult humans] both of whom opened their doors and emerged from the vehicle totally unharmed.

thats sufficient for me. my wife and i have already ordered one, sold our 6-speed slk320, and are expect to take delivery of our new fortwo in early 2008.

  • Unfortunately, the car actually under steers quite badly and there is a very good reason for this. During tyre testing, it was found that the car would over turn following a sudden change in direction (emergencies etc), OEM tyre manufacturer actually fitted stabilizers to the car for testing...

  • The car has a high centre of gravity that can contribute to it tipping over. So to counteract this the track was made a little wider and the steering less sharper. Fine for a small town car - as long as it stays in town.. not really for fun driving out on the open roads though.

  • Another problem is the size. Because of the lack of space on the Smart, the crumple zone is unable to absorb the energy of the impact as slow as a larger car with a large crumple zone. So you will stop a lot quicker in the Smart - your organs will not. This is where the crumpling steering wheel and airbag comes in, this helps absorb more energy to allow your organs to slow down a little less quicker. The slower you crash at a given speed, the better your shock survivability.

  • The safety cell - ie the passenger compartment must be absolutely rigid and must not crumple for obvious reasons. The rear of the car performs exactly the same job as the front to help prevent whiplash injuries - your first line of defence is your headrest, which prevents your head accelerating backward.

  • u r real clever :-)

  • Actually the car oversteers more than under. It has narrow front tires and wider rear to help turning. In addition, the rigid tridion cell acts as strut bars. I drive one and I can probably out corner most cars on highway rams or twisties. Highspeed race track type cornering, well this car isnt built for the race track...

  • Certainly wasn't the case on earlier models. This also affected the early A-class if I remember rightly. Interestingly I drove the coupe - that was a bit more fun, but the gearbox was absolutely atrocious!!!!!

  • that benz hurts me to see it go :(

  • You may still have your pretty face after the crash, but that instantaneous change in direction is still gonna scramble your innards.

  • i think you get more G-force in the smart because it has almost no hood i think the smart crimples 2-3 dm maybe

  • One thing I find slightly worring is that he didn't show the crash test dummy's legs and their condition or removed the dummy from the car.

As far as we know that dummy could have lost both feet or even both legs not a very good survival situation.

  • I havent seen him mention anything about the guys legs in this accident? cause they dont look like they would have survived?!

  • I would totally drive the smart car!

    well for safety reasons! =]

  • and you could casually open the door after the crash!!

  • ill keep my honda pilot..thank you very much

  • ill go with the Mercedes,my family bought a s-class and we crashed at 70mph and we all didnt even get injured

  • Well aren't you a responsible group of people...crashing at 70 mph!

  • worst hit man

  • haha yea.

  • Well the crash test dummy in the smart looks pretty dead, so I'll probably go with the merc

  • And the dummy in the Merc got out and jumped around, right? Of course it's dead. It's a dummy. If the thing was alive, I'd freak out and run.

  • That would be hilarious, if the merc dummy got out and tried to swap insurance info

  • lol.

  • Another american idiot. Make the war to another oil country and dont speak about europe.

  • wait a minute! i have a better idea.....yourmomsahomo can go to hell with hitler instead of mercedes, mercedes would atleast be missed.

  • if ur gonna diss do better than that fag

  • dont think your walkin away from that

  • mercedes forever

  • MERCEDES SUKSSSS

  • the smart car is bound to come off 2nd best there. poor thing. but nice video!

  • I agree with higerdestiny on that one....thats sacrilage

  • Does it seem morally wrong to anyone else that they massacred such a nice mercedes just to "test" a smart car?

  • Not at all. Since DiamlerChrysler owns both Mercedes and Smart, it is cheaper for them to use their own vehicles. Plus, it helps them test the Mercedes against something "unusual", like the ForTwo. Also, Smart's claim is that the ForTwo has the same safety rating as an E-Class Mercedes, which I believe is what is in this video. So they put them up against each other to see.

  • Well I would say that the E class performed better being that it was, as he said, twice as heavy.

  • uh....you have no idea what "nice" cars they wreck to test crashing... LOTS of cars. thats part of making them. they even crashed a mcleran f1 etc

  • Without trying to exaggerate.. what would happen if you were driving on the highway and crashed at 100mph??? Think they would find the remains?

  • Most ForTwo's only go 90mph. I don't know about the Brabus version, but I'm sure the Smart Diablo does go faster. However, for the general buyer, they don't go over 90mph, and take 17 seconds to get to 60mph. Speeding isn't something to worry about.

  • Sure the smartcar may not go as fast but Ive been on the autobahns in Europe and seen cars absolutely flying at 300km/h what would happen if one of these cars smash into a smart car??

  • What would happen if one of those cars hit a bee? At those speeds, just about anything other than an 18-wheeler would be destroyed, and from what I've seen, 18-wheelers are not on the autobahns. I'm sure a car going 300km/h (about 200mph) would even do tons of damage to an 18-wheeler. My point? Drive whatever you want. If it's your time, at least you'll die happy.

  • Oh, and the money you'd save on gas (and the low price of the car) would allow you to afford a really nice life insurance policy to leave for your family. Might as well get one, because driving anything can kill you, really.

  • poor mercedes

  • but your legs are minimal broken at least.

  • Well, ive just come out of a 40mph head on crash into a barrier, and i didnt even have a bruise. My Smart saved my life.

  • but overcharge is to big for people . and passanger or driver could be very badly hurt

  • You quiero un Smart ForTwo.

  • Wow! Smart seems to be a very safe car!

  • It is :) It is like driving a little tank!!

  • Of course, the seatbelts, airbag, and the other little safety goodies need to work harder to slow the occupants down more gently. Euro NCAP gave it *** out of 5

  • the driver would of still died if u search smart car u will see a similar crash test

  • SEEM isnt safe if ud notive the big merc has crumple zones which means it deforms the front bit of chassis so the car slows down and puts less gforce on the driver, while the smart hardly deforms at all, which will put an enormous amout of gforce on the driver, at higher speeds, ur brain and internal organs will shift places, making internal bleeding vry serious, while the seatbelt can cut into ur shoulder and chest. and u can slide forwar if ur seatbelt isnt worn properly across the hip

  • Don't forget that the forces experienced by the smart driver would be larger because the larger inertia of the Merc. This meant that the Merc pushed the smart back adding to that force.

I would much rather be in the merc.

  • (psst) theyre both mercs...

  • Yea, I mean the real Merc, not the SMART. The SMART isn't a Mercedes Smart, the brand is SMART even though it is owned and designed by Mercedes.

  • the smart is a merc, the name smart comes from mixing "swatch" the designers + "mercedes" + "art"

  • Yea, I know. But I was talking about the E class. It's obvious which one is the SMART and which is the MERC. As I stated before, the BRAND NAME IS SMART!
