There is a program you can download and use any image and it will save it as a minecraft map now, much easier.

@geecool345 A map in Minecraft is 128x128 pixels, each pixel representing an 8x8 block square colored by the most common block in it. If you have a 1024x1024 blocks flat area of land of the same material, you can make text and other pictures using different colored blocks. Make sure you stand at the exact center though, otherwise some of your text won't show up. Also, according to Minecraft Wiki, some blocks show up as gray on maps, so keep that in mind. I hope I helped.

@minuatar What the plugin does is it writes over the map data that's already there, making the game think it's loaded up a map that looks exactly like that image you just changed it to. In other words, it overwrites the map in the world data itself so that it will be permanently whatever image you changed it to.

@WeAreGRID being able to see those maps do not require anything else than vanilla minecraft. Using a server plugin to write on the the map is just one option, you could also use a third-party program like Image To Map(search on minecraft forums)
