This was an unlawful protest! If they would have stayed on the sidewalk and just circled the front door there is not much legally they can do. Going toe to toe with cops in the street is stupid! All cities (including Berkeley), town, states, ect have defined what can and cannot be done at a peaceable assembly. Including where to assemble (to allow traffic, fire and safety concerns), volume, ect. (sometimes including discourse, ie no hate speech). What is many times overlooked is that you rights cannot remove others rights.

Well its tough to tell if they really were the "riot squad", though they did have protective gear they lacked shields, armored vehicles, ect. You will see that these demonstrators have chained themselves to the door of the building preventing anyone from entering (and most from exiting), impeding business and creating a fire hazard. Looks like they had the street closed and we dont know what happened prior to their arrival.

The squad marched directly into a crowd of protesters who were neither causing damage to property nor any person, and began to shove them to the ground.
