  • @BetaArchiveCommunity NTA must of screwed up here.

  • Huell Howser's California Gold just showed this wonderful cartoon on his cool Public Broadcasting program but, without the intro credits. There's too many of the old classic cartoons like these Paramount made ones as well as as Mighty Mouse/Heckel & Jeckel Terrytoon's that aren't shown on TV anymore because they're tied-up in un-businesslike legal B.S. Whether it be classic Cartoon or modern Anime, I love all animation.

  • I love these cartoons. I watched them on tv when I was little in the '60's and loved them then.

  • No longer is Mount Whitney, then listed at 14,495' (it's now considered to be 14,505'), the highest elevation in the United States.

When Alaska was admitted to the Union in 1959, Mount McKinley (a/k/a Denali, which is 20,320' in elevation and 5,815' higher than Whitney), became the highest point.

In fact, Alaska has 16 mountains higher than Mt. Whitney.

Death Valley, although its elevation is not mentioned in this cartoon, sits at -282'.

  • "Fill 'er up!" "OK, boss!"

I thought calling someone "boss" was a strictly East Coast thing, especially in the NYC and Philly metro areas.

  • At 1:28, that's the best explanation I've ever seen for the "Warbonnet" name used to describe the livery of the former Atchinson, Topeka & Santa Fe R.R. locomotives!

  • Oops - Atchison! It's now part of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, which is about to be bought by Warren Buffett.

  • stupid

  • I get it: this cartoon short came out in 1948 and California was established as a state in 1848, so this short is a sort of centennial thing.

  • You're close!

Take a look at their state quarter - California became a state in 1850.

  • This was originally released as a Paramount "Screen Song" {in Technicolor} in March 1948 [there's a subtle plug for the studio at 3:20]; this is the "NTA" TV print of the late '50s.

  • @fromthesidelines

    In Polacolor...

If it was released in Technicolor, the line on the title card should say "Color by" not "IN".
