  • I thoroughly enjoyed working on this piece! Its gorgeous as well as challenging. I'm thinking of using it for my graduate school auditions.

  • thank you. I play with vandoren a 27and a28, I like this but I would like experimenting whith vandoren AL 4. You have played whith vandaron a 28?

  • what is your multhpiece?

  • vandoren AL3

  • Bravo! I'll be performing this piece on my senior recital at West Texas A&M University this coming Sunday. It's always wonderful to hear such great student recordings such as this - keep up the good work!

  • I hope you have a great performance! Thank you! I think this work really was the first thing that made me step up to the plate and test my artistry at a high level. It has been 4 years (nearly) since I played this so I think a lot has probably changed but I think I have kept the same musical phrase and direction. Its just a lot more comfortable and much less mistakes :) I'm not sure if i'm a pro yet, however (hehe)

  • You are not helping and you are not welcome to comment here anymore, as your opinion means nothing.

  • thanks, this is the best recording on youtube, and im starting on it

  • cool. just started this piece!

  • Well done, congratulations!

  • Thanks Dr. R! That is a great compliment coming from someone with such a developed sense of style! I miss getting time to play saxophone but i'm still hopeful that when I get around to my DMA i'll be able to put the "doubles" down for a while.

  • Wonderful! I visited Urbana in Feb. to audition with DR and I just thougth that the campus was so beautiful. DR was really nice. I'll check out the rest of your posting which I'm sure will be as excellent as this one.

  • This and Claude T. Smith's Fantasia are my two favorite solos in the saxophone world. I loved your interpretation of the cadenza section, and was very impressed with your ability to pull and push with tempo in the final section. You are a great saxophonist. Good luck in the rest of your endeavors, and I look forward to seeing more of your name in the saxophone world.

  • oh my..... what a beautiful sound, i switched from the alto saxophone because i "just didnt like it", however now i begin to regret this. the vibrato makes this peice all the more haunting. BRAVO JOE!!! my hat tips t' ye.

  • alto saxophone can be very hard to play with a deep/rich sound but i promise it can be done :) Playing tenor saxophone for a while and then going back to alto saxophone can help out quite a bit if you're lookign to get used to a deeper/richer vibrato. Then when you go back to alto you'll have better strength in your face to do the vibrato you're looking for

  • I hate to admit this on your channel *ducks behind a rock* but I've never been a fan of the saxophone. I guess it's been my own naivety because I've always based that strictly on the type of music that is most commonly played on the sax. I've had, on occassion, been able to hear some of the lower-pitched saxes in person, from an old neigher, and those interested me more.

Anyway, my point now is that after hearing you play this, I think better of the sax because I hear it in a different way.

  • I've never thought of the sax as an orchestral instrument, because it's usually never scored. Maybe more modern pieces use it, but of all the old composers, it's just not there. After hearing you play this piece, and quite well if I may add, I see that the sounds produced on a saxophone can be very pleasant to listen to. Your skill level on the instrument is impressive, which must add tremendously to the tonality of notes, thus making it sound even nicer. So, thank you for enlightening me.

  • this is just the most wonderful thing I have ever heard about my saxophone playing... i am touched so very deeply. I cannot begin to thank you enough. I have thought about giving up on saxophone many times but this comment really gives me the desire to keep playing. Thank you so very very much!

  • Oh, that would've been such a mistake! But I'm sure it's too much in your blood to have ever come true. It's always fun to approah other avenues, like you with your oboe and clarinet. I play violin and viola but have been trying to teach myself how to play the flute. It's fun to be able to play multiple instruments. Sometimes you just need to give one a break and switch to another for a bit, especially if you find yourself frustrated by a work.

Good luck on all your endeavors, Joe.

  • Very amazing.

My favourite from you as of now.

  • It actually does sound like a Violin!! You're amazing!!!

  • Wow this is just amazing!

  • Thank you so much! I have been playing saxophone most of my life... longer than the other instruments but I am trying to make them all as strong as each other. Maybe someday. you are very kind!!!

  • Nice...you play great.

  • thanks for the compliment :)

  • great stuff, I felt like I was somewhere else :) great pic too Joe!

  • thank you and *blush* :)

  • what is your mouthpiece?

  • i had been playing on my AL3 for about one year at this time. i still use the same mouthpiece even though I have experimented some with the Selmer C* here and there. I'm still much happier with the vandoren AL3 overall, however and don't anticipate switching anytime soon.
