The ScanGauge is a great tool. Helps me get the most out of my Honda. And one night, I did a drive down the freeway with the windows down because it was cool outside, and it had a SUBSTANTIAL effect on my gas mileage.
I quit delivering when I graduated neat job if you have a fuel efficient car that is paid for and has no mechanical problems. I earned an associates degree in electronics so I could go deliver chemicals. I loved my metro it was the best car I ever owned. I bought a saturn ion to replace it had to get rid of ion 25k miles computer problems that pissed me off I got it new paid it off and had to loose all that money. SATURN SUCKS. Car sold still under warranty towed 2 shop5x.
When I went to get the check for my gap insurance he said its 50/50 weather you get a good one I was so pissed when he told me that they know the thing is crap and sell them anyhow I have changed my fleet to toyota/scion no problems 20k miles combined on the 2 cars in one year.
I bet you're envious of Darin's Metro and the modifications he's done to it. When that engine craps out on you, you should look for a 10-15 horsepower tractor diesel and use that to run the car. With sufficient aerodynamic modifications, you'd still probably be able to reach 65 mph and you'd get 90+ mpg doing it! Acceleration would be crap though.
Yeah, the Geo's engine (now with 279K on it) is starting to become rather weak. Definitely less horsepower than the 55 when it was new, plus the exhaust is rather foul smelling. I'd love to do an electric conversion with it. I just wish I had the skills to do it.
You can always develop the skills to do it. Best place to get started? Read 'Convert It' by Mike Brown and 'Build Your Own Electric Vehicle' by Bob Brandt. Then search around the Electric Vehicle Discussion List and other places for info. When you have the cash, dive in!
Slipping a VW TDi engine in one wouldn't be a bad idea either. A 130 horsepower Metro with a chipped TDi would be fun and efficient...
That's so coooool! I'm glad you did this, and, yes, it would be great to reveal where you got your scanguage in one of your episodes (& how to hook it up). I'm designing a very efficient battery-electric motorcycle.
I actually lost my scangauge last summer, so that's why I haven't made any more videos.
The scangauge is super easy to hook up. If you have a car that's a 1996 model or newer, take a look under the dashboard on the driver's side. You'll find a plug in connecter, and that's where the scangauge connects. Simple as that.
where did you get eh scanguage? and how much did you pay for it? I drive a 3 cyl. geo metro 94'. I would love it if i didnt have to calculate my mileage constantly. My record is 65mpg.
It's not all that unrealistic since I thought of this experiment whe I moved my table and chairs in my car. I also wanted to quantify the massive fuel economy loss.
I already did an experiment with the windows up/down: Fuel Economy Test #3.

Really? I did another test with my windows rolled down and only saw a modest decrease. Granted I was only doing 50-mph.
I'm so happy I don't own a car anymore. It's amazing how must money it frees up when I don't have to pay for gas/insurance/parking etc.

I had to travel with my hatchback open whenever I was hauling something that wouldn't quite fit. So it does happen.

I used to deliver pizza too! Very good money to be made there (I even did that job with a V8 Thunderbird, yikes!)

I delivered pizza in Edmonton in 1985 with my 1974 olds cutlass, not really profitable.
