  • @Desinewyorican im not from fayetteville but im from north carolina & like 2hrs from there ...but i am proud david leathers!

  • I've searched for this song for years. I remember sitting around after school with my friends listening to records, we played this one out. I almost cried when I heard it on American Idol. The young man did it justice. I hope everyone enjoys this oldie but goodie.

  • @jroman0003 searched for years?? just youtube it and here it is...

  • I think David Leather sings this song..

  • OOO...MMM. GGG... When I saw little man sing this on American Idol I fell to my knees. As a little girl my mother would play this song so much. I didn't know who made it until last night. I thought I was the only one who knew this song.

  • David Leathers made me a fan of this song I had to find and download this

  • Lol as much as I appreciate the kid bringing this to surface...lol kind of miss the unknown status it had. xD

  • @Kaji9001 Why would you want a beautiful song like this to be unknown? With all the crap music that is floating around, it's awesome that music this good is finding new fans.. That way, music will sell instead of image.

  • @PootieTang05 Except it found new fans about 40 years too late. Lol I'm not saying I didn't want others to know about it but this is quite a classic and I would rather it be remembered as that and not "the song that the kid on american idol sang"

  • Comment removed

  • @Kaji9001 I agree, but after watching David Leathers sing this song and listening to the original as well, it makes me have a whole now appreciation for the group 21 Century. I mean sometimes it takes unwanted exposure in order to unmask greatness.. But I agree, this song should have been pushed to the forefront a LONG TIME AGO!!

  • Lil dude on Idol brought me here and I am glad he did... If I closed my eyes, I would have sworn that this is him singing the actual song... This song is AMAZING!!

  • David Leather brought me here!

  • Davis Leathers......nice choice!

  • Thumbs up if Idol brought here

  • me also....i just watched that kid perform.....didn't watch the whole show

  • American idol brought me here LOL

  • @blaqpirate your weak find out about stuff before the media you simpleton

  • @trevanismith oooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kkkkkkkk. Tell me again how in the hell did you come up with your statement from my comment exactly?

Once you find out about correct punctuation and sentence structure to prove your point, get at me then.

  • David Leathers from American Idol sounds exactly like the first singer!

  • @3aav3 i said the same thing , exactly, this person has a lil more bass

  • david leathers jr is going to give this group alot of play

  • I had to find this song after that kid sung it on A.I. I can't wait to hear more from him.

  • @twinronda yeah,me too..He's good :)

  • That kid is going to Hollywood! He is great.

  • that 12 year old kid on ai knocked it out of the park.

  • OMG I'd forgotten about this one. Heard a young man sing it tonight on American Idol. I used to know all the words to this and tried to sing like him. I did pretty good too. Thanks for the upload.

  • Been searching for this for a long time, thanks for the upload!!!!!!!!!!

  • Brighter side of darkness and 21st century are both from chicago but two different groups.

  • Bronze Nazareth!

  • I've always wanted to know more about the 21st Century. My sister Brenda lived in the Horner on Washington. She introduced me to this song and subsequently soul groups. Is like to know more about the soul groups from Chicago.

  • such an amazing song

  • i love this song so so much!!

  • Luv this song :)

  • I knew they were from the chi , thanks for posting all the info. They had the perfect blend of voices ......

  • éééé hehehhehe legal manoh

  • When we did it we never thought it would resonate with so many people over so many years. Actually, I thought back then that releasing an uptempo for the group's debut would work better. I was wrong. But to clear up some confusion out there--The group consisted of Tyrone Moores, Alphonso Smith, Fred Williams, Alonzo Martin and Pierre Johnson. They are the ONLY voices on those records. They were produced by myself and Mark Davis.

  • @DMEpresents Thank you guys for creating such great art. I hope all of you get properly credited for it today. This song and a few others of theirs bring back so many memories. And name change or not, I still call them the 21st Century. That is what we found them as, and that's what we will remember them as LOL.

  • @TiffanyTahiti Thank you very much! Yes, we do get credit and royalties from that song. It's fascinating that so many young artists have sampled it. Who would've thought?

  • Beautiful.

  • This song brings back so many memories from my childhood in the 70's. Great, great song!

  • rrockhard1 lol are you on drugs pierre johnson the lead singer is my brother and we are personal friends with the group brighter side of darkness... i like your post though you make me laugh with your incorrectness my brother pierre and his son are having a ball with your post century 21 wasnt even a thought back then in the 70's

  • this song was recorded by the 21st century .my brother pierre johnson was the lead vocalist on this track the brighterside of darkness recorded love jones..the 21st century later changed their name to the 21st creation not by choice...

one of the best upcoming groups from the 70's unbelievable all of them

  • reminds me of mr j mediros

  • Comment removed

  • this is the song i was the refer to....they also song love jones, by another name the lighter side of darkness

  • @dwaynej86 You Mean Brighter Side Of Darkness

  • @dwaynej86 No. The 21st Century and the Brighter Side of Darkness who recorded "Love Jones" were two different groups. None of the same personnel were ever in either group. The monolog in "Rain" is reminiscent of "Love Jones" but that's where the similarity begins and ends.

  • @dwaynej86 Brighter side of darkness, 21st century, Two different groups.

  • ok so are you telingl me that 21 cent and brighter side of dark coverd the same songs? 21st century was a indepent label wasthat barry white had under rca~!!!!plz look up and let me know what you think im not rite but so far~!!!

  • ok so are you telingl me that 21 cent and brighter side of dark coverd the same songs?

  • FRANKEY---THANX FOR THIS POST!!!!! THIS was a CLASSIC SLOW JAM back in my childhood and i never forgot it..had the album ...but it was a copy with NO LABEL....lol...never knew the name of the album all these years...but glad there is people such as yourself who knows classic jams to post

  • Fresh Panda sent me here. This song is amazing, like fucking seriously

  • the name was 21st century they had to change it becase of legal reasons 21st century as we all know is a insurance and mortgage company which is why they had to change there name to a brighter side of darkness i to have that same album. love jones is on it to they wher on soul train and they use the name brigher side of darkness ........so 21st century and brighter side is the same group ......lol thats what happend to them they hade to change ther name ~!!!

  • @rrockhard1 I'm not sure where you're getting your info on this group from but,it's quite inaccurate.I noticed some of your facts awhile back that were also inaccurate and I'm surprised no one has corrected you!!! The 21st Century WAS infact a GROUP and were on The RCA LABEL(I have the LP ).They did however have legal issue with their name but, they changed their name to 21st Creation(I also have that LP)Brighter Side Of Darkness is also from Chicago however these are 2 totally seperate groups!

  • @MrKaydeepar3 Motown's lawyers were over-sensitive in my opinion, concerning the name

the 21st Century." It was they who suggested a changed since we had received a letter from a choir stating they recorded under that name. No one did any due diligence nor were any trademark applications ever filed with the group's logo. Mark Davis suggested the name change, "the 21st Creation." My response was "creation of what?

Anyway, that name change hurt their momentum.

  • Classic!

  • Tyrone and Smokey are half brother, Tyrone was my childhood friend. Myself, Tyrone and Smokey swim for the Henry H. Boys Club first Swimming Team. Little F.Y.I. Tyrone and Trees where born on January 15, 1957 or 58 I was just thinking of him about 2 weeks ago I came thru Chicago about 3 years ago. Trying to get up with my old School and sing friends. I miss my true friends from the H.H. Project. evans

  • What you may not know is Tyrone Moore, Myself, Smokey, Bobby Rices and Teddy Capeltion Where the first young male group besides the Spidell out of the Horner Project in the early 70s Smokey was the only one in the group that didn't go to Briney with us. I live in 140, Tyrone and Bobby Live in 141, Teddy lived across from Union Park, and Smokey lived in 2029. Smokey and Tyrone get with Freed and Pierre Johnson, Alphonso Smith, we called him Al. After Smokey left Alonzo Martin became a member.

  • I had no Ideal that Tyrone Pass. He was my School mate. In Fact Tyrone song with me in our very first group. When I Live in the Horner. • NOW THIS ISREAL R&B HOW I MISS IT!!!

  • I saw this group perform when I was in high school.with the Chi-lites they were good.

  • FrankeyHoboken you have the best catalog of songs that I've heard since I've been listening to YouTube! Continue to educate the youngsters.

  • I always thought the name of this group was 21st Century. Didn't this group also have a song called "Does Your Moma Know About Us" written by one of the guys from Cheech and Chong. I think the song was about interacial dating.

  • @ccbs82 You've got a great memory. They were the 21st Century and "Does Your Mama Know About Me?" appears on their only album for RCA "Ahead Of Our Time."

  • Wow, I've heard this one before. This song is pretty dynamic.

  • when that album was made brighter side of darlness had legal problems they could not use ther name so they wher the fist group from 20centry records which is why its listed 21 century i have that record the 45 n the album n did my home work thats why when you look up 21century you woint find anything that was not the name of the group n love jones is on the album but when i saw soul train they said brighter side of darknes ?

  • E-White - The Rain (Produced by Meech Wells)

  • Me and my child hood friends from the westside of Chicago lost our damn minds when we heard this song. Shorty thereafter, we formed a group. The only problem we didn't have a lead singer like Pieere Johnson LMAO!!!!! or the other noteable members. Aw yeah!!!! What the Hell is wrong with two people who didn't like this song. Idiots!!!!!!!

  • Alphonso Smith is my father...

  • What a nice soulsong....its awesome. Wonder why those songs arent made anymore?

    Greetings from Denmark

  • Bronze Naxareth-Sinhue

  • Hell to the yea on this song! This is tha kut......thank u who posted this up....U got sum ol skool taste.....

  • The Lead Singer's name is Pierre Johnson..The group was from Chicago, Illinois, Henry Horner Homes Housing Development!!

  • @divapie1 I didn't know they were from Chicago. It makes sense because the only time I ever heard this song was when Herb Kent would play it. I have loved it since I first heard it long ago. It took me forever to find it. It is a bonafide classic!

  • Dang. I heard this song for the first time last week and I thought it was the Sylvers because some youtubers posted it as such. I was debating whether it was Ricky or Edmund on lead. I came to the conclusion it was Edmund since he sang lead more than the others, but the voice didn't sound like his either. It's good to know the real artists behind this song. And yes, such a powerful voice that kid had. Would like to hear more from them. I wonder how come they didn't become popular.

  • Brighter side Darkness all Day My Brother I had the 45--n just knowz my musik

    photographic my Brotha--

  • @BoricuaJohnny5978 Nope! The 21st Century on initially Golden Tone Records then RCA Records then Motown. The Brighter Side of Darkness were on 20th Century Records.

  • Thank you for posting this! I was so heart broken when my 45 broke after an earthquake! Couldn't find it anywhere! And my 45 read "21st Century" too! ;)

  • What a F......G GREAT song!!!! A song a trul Latino like myself can TRULY appreciate! What became of this group or the lead singer with the KILLER voice? Anyone know ANYTHING about this group ie..other tunes, how many in the group, where are they from... etc? AMAZING that with those GREAT voices, most of us have NEVER heard of this group. What a shame!!!

  • @MrRaymchopper Yeah, the lead on this song is no joke. There's also another guy in the group with a flawless voice as well. He sings lead on "Does Your Momma Know About Me" and "Love At It's Best." With two great singers in tow, this group should've went a lot further.

  • @MrRaymchopper ,Hi, The lead singer on this song's name is Pierre Johnson. He was a classmate of mine in elementary school. There were five members, we grew up in The Henry Horner Housing Development, (Projects) on the Westside of Chicago. We were all so proud for we had our own Jackson Five. They appeared on Soul Train and had only one album..Rumor has it, that this group fell apart due to poor management. Pierre is doing well, we are facebook friends and have been friends for over 30yrs

  • Nice

  • This is just to good!

  • In 1975 I heard this song in the gymnasium of Robert Clemente High School in Chicago. I never did find out the name of the song, but I never forgot it's melody. Thirty three years later, I finally found it on Youtube. It's a testament to the beauty and greatness of the song that decades later I still remember the rain and the song.

  • beautiful throwback classic

  • my pops went to crane with them in 74-75 in he been playing this song all my life in most of his life 2

  • This song brings back so many great memories of the 70's

  • Oh the memories that come flooding back, particularly slow dancing to this song at the old school house parties...those were fantastic times. Thanks for bringing back that feeling!

  • I can't get enough of this song! Thank you so much for uploading this song!

  • A lost R&B classic no doubt!!!

  • Such a powerful voice....

  • My cousin had me up till 6 in the morning looking for this. I found it on ITunes. Thanks for the upload!

  • One of the BEST tracks ever! Never get tired of hearin' it! And it is...the 21st Century!

  • Boy! How I remember the rain; and the glorious feeling it gave me.

  • I can't believe that in my "favorites" I made no comment on this particular track. Well, consider it served: this songs was one of the all-time music to do "THE GRIND" to with your girl. And believe me, if got to 'grind', then the girl was yours!!!

  • i really thought this was jackson 5

  • Comment removed

  • You're absolutely right, this song is by the 21st Century, one of my favorites back in 10th grade, 1972-73, the album gotta away through the years, thanks for your contribution!

  • This song is not preformed by "Brighter Side Of Darkness" or "The Sylvers" It's preformed "21ST CENTURY" I have it on CD, had the album when I was a kid, have the album now, and have been listening to this since I was 11 years old for the past 35 years. I think I should know since I made an mp3 off the album for this post.

  • @FrankeyHoboken

this song is def a classic, why it wasn't such a big hit i have no idea, but if someone re did this song today i believe it would be a hit

  • @FrankeyHoboken Thank you for posting this! I was so heart broken when my 45 broke after an earthquake! Couldn't find it anywhere! And my 45 read "21st Century" too! ;)

  • @FrankeyHoboken | hope you like my cover of the song ;)

  • @FrankeyHoboken WHO SING IT??? MAN THEY JUST DONT MAKE IT LIKE THIS DAM!!!!!!!!!!!!MAKE ME WANT TO CLOSE MY EYES AND JUST CRY

  • thats my joint ......i belive brighter sibe of dark is the artist

  • the best Sample ive ever heard using this songs has to be [Memory Lane] by O.C.

if you do end up checking it out, search for [[OC - Getaway]] though, the person who uploaded both tracks got the tittles switched up, i love this song though, its so... Soulful and relaxing

  • Ummm...this is the Sylvers, not 21st century.

  • @daniel14 do your research :)

21st century are indeed the ORIGINAL recording artist's of this song.

  • this is soo good beyond any words it touches ur soul in the deepest way

  • @peteypete1984 I know right with most songs there's a few negatives but there isnt any I would change in this song its perfect too bad everyone slept on it I wonder where they are now?

  • This was a very impressive group, from a Public Housing Development in Chicago. Pierre Johnson, the lead Singer was a classmate of mine and a good friend. They had so much promise, but something happened ....TOO BAD!!!

  • @divapie1... I wondered what happened to them, they were very talented.

  • Brighter Side Of Darkness Sung this Version which is the first ones 21 century covered it but this the Brighter Side Of Darkness Version

  • @thtdudecruz326 Brighter side of darkness made love jones and sounds nothing like 21st century do your homework kid.this song is originally performed by 21st and never by brighter side, how do I KNOW? because its me singing .Pierre, check out the album ahead of our times leader and my voice trainer of group Freddie Williams, lead vocalsALONZO Martin,Alphonso Smith,Tyrone Moore.

  • what a gem

  • BEAUTIFUL!!

  • THIS WAS A CHICAGO GROUP, LIVE ON 21st STREET IN CHCAGO. WAS BIG IN 1973 PAID 0N A 1000 WATT RnB RADIO STATION WVON IN CHICAGO.

  • @darrell60302 Thanks for the info, I thought this was from the Jacksons, My brother and I used to sing this during our family nite.

  • Rythm 'N Blues !!!!!!

  • steeeeeee

  • They Sound Like Jackson 5

  • Marcus Chavers

    MJC Entertainment

    Was Here!

  • Corker of a soul ballad! : )

  • The Brighter Side of Darkness never recorded this song. They did Love Jones! Snoop Dogg sampled this again on his Sisters N Brothers from the Welcome to da Chuuch album.

  • @DMEpresents Wow..it really sounds like a Brighter Side of Darkness..Thanx for the info.

  • @msnette40 I think the 2 monologues in "RTR" remind people of "Love Jones." But actually I got the idea from Smokey Robinson & the Miracles' cut "Baby, Baby Don't Cry." The 21st Century were very powerful singers for their age. They could sing the 4 Tops songs and sound just like them. They were incomparable.

  • @DMEpresents Thank you so much for making such timeless music this is one of my favorite songs. That's cool to know you got the inspiration for this song from Baby Baby Don't Cry because that's one of my favorite Smokey songs as well.

  • stack used one of the smoothest samples ive ever heard in all of rap to this song....

listen to peep game by stack bundles

    RIP STACK

  • I agree. The Stack track was BANANAS! RIP :-(

  • @thekingchris1 hell yeah thats a hot track. i sampled this song too. let me know what you think. its the big pooh remix video response

  • @thekingchris1 E-White sampled this beat too an underratted rapper tho

  • @thekingchris1 Mutt-The Motions. Also the best DNB sample.

  • Brighter Side of Darkness sings this song 21st century did a cover on this but the song playing is Brighter Side of Darkness which is better anyway lol

  • THought this was Jackson 5

  • ytcracker - thr rain
