If you happen to smile again at the next show, ..and look over at some sitting green Peavey guitar over on the edge of the stage, ..I ( and you!!!) know there would be 600 people trembling to jump up there and help you save this world with the fantastic enlightenment that you bring to our workld!!!!!!!!!

    God bless you!!!!

  • One of the more underratted southern rock guitarist. He never was the best singer in the genre but that dosnt mean he wasnt a lot of fun.I met him in 1979 at a place called Momtanas in Seattle and he could drink and drug with the best of them.

  • @Big77Jim Come on! None of us did that!!!

  • great song,I saw elvin bishop at the calderone theater in NY blew me away.his bad was discribed as a southern rock but the blues came out loud and strong.great song.

  • this kid could write

  • I saw Elvin Bishop at least 20 times! At one of his Concerts in Campbell CA fell in love for the first time! Never married the girl :- ( But that impression of good music as well as Elvin's spirit to excite his audience will always bring me back!

    Cordially,

    Kevin Sullivan

  • COOL SONG---Elvin is cool as a fool!

  • I remember seeing him live several times back in the 70's... was always great !

There was this funny thing he use to do on Travil'in Shoes where he would flap his arm back and forth in the air between licks to the rhythm. Ahhh ! the 70's...... long gone and I miss it so much..... Thanks for posting the tune !

  • Used to see Elvin All around San Jose Ca. Great rock n roll.

  • The live version on "Live! Raisin' Hell" is excellent as well, if not better, because of the sped up tempo and the energy of playing to an audience.

  • Found this song by accident on a random southern rock album I bought in a truck stop!! I literally wore the cassette in half playing it so much!

One of the most underrated, unmentioned, talented guitar players from the southern rock genre.

  • see him tonight at the coach house.....should be great show...mp

  • a top ten all-time riff

  • This song is a true master piece, I saw them live they are great, amazing

  • good stuff brother! southern fried blues kickass...

  • Wish I could have been there when he played with Miles Davis back in 67.

  • Wish I could have been there when he played with Miles davis back in 67.

  • Probably some of the (now) most politically incorrect lyrics of all time! LOVE IT! Plus some of the best air-guitar material ever and then you can shift to air-piano!! LOL! GREAT STUFF! And don't forget Delaney and Bonnie on back-up vocals...

  • @moondog277 dickey betts too,i believe

  • Played music ever since I was in high school, drummer playing James Brown and early Elvin Bishop. This stuff is as good as it gets!

  • damn! where can i find the tabs or at least the chords for this!"?!?

  • I saw Elvin Bishop on my 18th birthday at Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom, Atlant. 1976. Great stuff.

  • Best EB album EVER!

  • elvin sure can play/ great tune thanks for posting it :}

  • This is what the so called "Modern County Music should sound like"

  • saw him live on Sproul Plaza steps at UC Berzerkley in the summer of '79...

he did a walk around solo in the crowd with a cordless pickup, going through the crowd, kissing girls, drinking beers, and generally having a grand time and yet never missing a lick the whole way.....

back when i was young and had a future.

  • Great Blues performer!

  • WHAT A GIFT BE THANKFUL WOMEN

  • It's Hank Aaton's baseball bat .. and don't apologize for -politically correct BS . How about good ole free speech.. screw all these noveau wimps!

  • lester bangs, the rock journalist of the 70s, said country rock would take over the world, he was right for awhile. listen to the crap on the radio now. doesnt sound like this anymore. fuck me.

  • What happens at 6:10? Yoko run up and sang for awhile?

  • stegg17 you got that right

  • Southern fried mud stomping teeth kickin' finer than frog hair get down on that lead guitar Elvin Bishop lip smackin' good!

  • I played this song over and over when I was dealing with my wife before we divorced

  • I kind of thought this was the situation. Where did you live? I presume it was

    somewhere in the South.

  • Went to see Al Stewart in Vancouver,,,Elvin Bishop opened,,,Al Stewart who? LOL!!

  • took this album ou to california on surfing trip in early 70's and couldnt get enough of it .some cali guys were blown away with it.later that summer saw him at the Golden Bear at the Hunnington Pier !!he was awsome....

  • took this album out to california on surfing trip and blew the cali boys mind...esp the song: wide wide river

  • elvin bishop played a show at the stanford jazz festival last year. it was their blues night, and he played with more energy than a lot of younger guys ever do, it was incredible. it made me fall head over heels in love with the blues.

funny part was, he had dropped an amp on his foot the week before, so he did the whole show sitting down, but when he really got into it, he would start getting up and start moving the chair around. great, great show.

  • we followed him like people follow the Grateful Dead..back in the med 70's.

the lyrics would make us laugh so hard..

  • Saw him in 76 in Arcata ....good night....good memories.

  • A SURE ENUFF GREAT GUITAR PICKER AND PRETTY DANG GOOD SINGER TOO!!!

  • I still have the album !!

  • Elvin; you always rock (: One of the best guitar and song writers that I have ever known. I always went to see you in Chicago in the ole days late 60's with either Fred or Larry from Linn County. I was their original drummer. Wish you luck and much moo-la. I heard about you and Steve of the group/ and the song he wrote. Too bad that he was so strung out... I think that he was super also.

  • Posting this on FaceBook as my Lost Classic Of The Day!

  • true...Bishop backing Al stewart at agrapnewhocares! Nostradamus predicted headliner would suck and oooohhhh so true. Thank-you Elvin! at least we got to shuffle a wee bit! Promoter? I hope your out of the business!

  • I gotta know- why do so many people call Elvin a horses' ass? His music is great- what kind of a human being is he?

  • @billchew450 I can tell you what kind of man he was to me. My band opened up for him back in 93, and he was very gracious and supportive of us. I never knew of his personal tragedy in 2000 until today reading wiki.

  • Comment removed

  • @billchew450 Bill I have never once said his music is bad. What you don't understand is, most on here went to a concert Drank Beer Got fucked up and so on creating a great time. This has nothing to do with what kind of man he is. I lived in the same community with him for years. Many there know his EGO and its huge. He thinks he's a god. Truth of the matter is he couldn't have lived in a worse place for Ego Worshipers. Our community was really laid back and we did like EGOS.

  • Most of us Southern folks could care less about what is politically correct. Just don't mess with us.

  • memories woo hoo!!!!!

  • OOOOoooh God I love this song... thanks for posting!!

  • Saw Elvin Bishop play at the Catalist in Santa Cruz, Ca. He brought the house down there also. What a talent

  • Love it!! I haven't heard this in years - thanks for posting.

  • I had the pleasure of seeing ole Elvin when he opened for Electric Light Orchestra in 1974. We he played, "Travelin Shoes," he brought the house down. I have never seen a more raucous crowd....people dancin on their chairs, mixin it up in the aisles, just throwing it down and having a good ole time....it was AWESOME!!!

  • i remember hearing about Elvin back in the day at the old Shaboo in willimantic Ct back in the 1970's..Derringer, johnny winters and a few other regulars used to frequent that spot alot..

  • @custardpie40

I saw him at the Shaboo in 1975 and Pig's place in 1976. Amazing shows each!!!!

  • Heartsfield, Firefall, NRPS, Poco. One of the funniest pairings I saw was SLADE with Elvin Bishop in Davenport, Iowa in a small theater, can't remember the name, but we laughed about that one for weeks. The band that popped my concert cherry was the Allman Brothers tho, sad... but post Duane, but still Berry Oakley. One Way Out babay!!!!

  • first time I heard Alvin play was on the first Paul Butterfield Blues Band lp, probably 66-67. He's been around a while, probably influenced all those Southern Rockers. Find that first Butterfield lp, or the second one East/West and here him and Mike Bloomfield cutting it up.

  • These were the days of Southern Rock....some of the best music you will ever hear.... you may also know him from the Butterfield Blues Band.....

  • hey, i don't actually know anything about elvin bishop and I just stumbled onto this video kinda randomly but am I the only one who hears a lot of similarites with the allman brothers (I don't just mean cause they both play slide but also in the way they play specifically)

  • Look up 'Capricorn Recording Artists'. Marshall Tucker Band, Charlie Daniels, Allman Bros. They played together guest spots etc. It will open up a bunch of bands, Lynrd Skynrd and on and on, have fun.

  • I agree, with the two lead thing it can sound like Dickie Betts and Duane...but with a bit more of a Swing/Boogie Woogie thang...great band

  • Totally Awesome!!

  • Gonna get a hank arron`a baseball bat and tenderize her head. Nobody today has that kind of creativity in lyrics, not to mention actually writting and playing music instead sampiling somebody elses hard work.

  • What about Grandma got run over by a reigndeer? haha

  • Back in the day, 1971 to be exact- Fleetwood mac did a song called Hi Ho Silver. There was a line in that song "don't make me nervous, I'm holdin' a baseball bat."

  • @theminimumdog Exactly like I said, the artists today are not that creative. You have to go back in time to the age of rock and roll60s&70s early 80s

  • I'm pretty sure That's Johnny "V" Vernazza on the other guitar. (Elvin's longtime guitarist) And I was at that TYA concert in 1973. Elvin was jamming because TYA was really late and they had to keep playing.

  • If this one is studio not recent it was Johnny V. You can really tell a big difference in those old records with Phil Aaberg on piano and Johnny V, they had some chops. Let It Flow, great album. I think his best!!!

  • lpwducks, double and triple harmony melody lines played with guitars were common in country music long before rock musicians adopted it. I think Duane and especially Dickey heard the technique in western swing music on the radio as a kid.

  • Elvin opening for Alvin Lee and Ten Years After in the football stadium at UOP in Stockton in 1973. What a JAM at the end.

  • Elvin introduced the double lead to Betts and Duane Allman, they were on the same label. Elvin and Bloomfield were famous for it with Paul Butterfield.

  • Dickie Betts was the other guitar player on this set.

  • Get OUT! I had no idea. THX I love love love it! Who can possibly sit still while listening? :D

  • And Steve Miller on piano.

  • I love this song!

  • UC Davis 1977 Elvin Bishop in the air

  • oh yeah !

  • CD says "he ain't good lookin'"? Big deal. He plays slide as good as any an better'n most. I'd let him tear off my blue jeans in the barn any day he wants to.

  • As Charlie Daniels wrote" Elvin Bishop sittin on a bail of hay. He ain't good lookin but he shure can

play". You got that right CD!! Go Elvin

  • Elvin Bishop rocks!

Grew up hearing him at tons of local bay area events. Fantastic showman-- he always gets the crowd going.

  • Love this guy and sorry that he hasn't gotten the air play he deserves.

    Maybe YouTube will help.

  • Possibly the greatest under-appreciated songs of the Southern Rock era!

  • Can't remember the year, but it was at Radio City Music Hall, outside the sign read-

    "Elvin Bishop w/Special Guest".

Halfway through this song the Special Guest walks on stage playin' lead in total harmony with Elvin. It was Dickey Betts!

The house went nuts! Thank you for sharing and bringing back a good memory.

  • How cool was that, thanks for sharing great memories.

  • Vancouver, Town Pump, sometime way back when...Everybody danced and Everybody had a good time!!! Thanks!!!

  • luved him all the time at the Berkeley Keystone!!!!!!!!!

  • What is says is "gonna get Hank Aaron's baseball bat and tenderize her head.....not likely...just blowing off steam. Great hard drivin' TUNE!

  • the sound of the guitar, at times reminds me of Jessica (Allman bros.)

  • elvin rocks!!!!! i don't know how many times i've seen him in the bay area mostly in the mid-late 70's . listen to your rap lyrics and then tell me that this wrong!!!!!!!!

  • "gonna take a baseball bat and tenderize her head"

    great politically incorrect line

People, lighten up, it's just rock & roll!

  • @pretorious700 That's a funny lyric! And I love that it's not politically correct!

  • Comment removed

  • @pretorious700 Gonna get Hank Aaron's baseball bat and tenderize her head!

  • Oh-yeah! Got this album in '74. Pointer Sisters did great vocal (my baby is so doggone fine) and they didn't hit until '75.

Fishin' great song! Our band still does "The things that I used to do" Elvin style.

  • yeah my dad thinks your comments on funny. I STILL CANT GET THE SONG. why? lol

  • I guess this was recorded AFTER Mickey Thomas sand up front on "Fooled Around And Fell In Love"??

Because that is the only song that I really know by Elvin Bishop!

  • Poor thang!

  • god put on my travelin shoessssss!!!!!!!!! gotta love elvin

  • Funky and cool...doesn't get any better than this!

  • Seen him in ST. Louis back in '77 or '78. Don't really remember the year, those days were somewhat of a blur. He appeared with Bonnie Bramlett and MTB. What a show! Had to come listen to this, need to borrow that baseball bat, but knowin' my hard-headed ol' lady, the damn thing(the bat) will splinter first.

  • I remember the date. It was 1975 in the spring. I was there, too. I recall Toy Caldwell in a white suit come out and play the guitar by himself. It was incredible. At the end everybody came out and played "Will the Circle be Unbroken" together. One of the best concerts I ever went to.

  • Elvin also played at the Six Flags over St. Louis Amphitheater in '79. I was on the stage crew. That summer Six Flags had, like 50 acts, including Charlie Daniels, Wet Willie, Louisiana LeRoux...

  • Wunnerful' wunnerful stuff by El Bish !!

This song bounced back in my life--stuck like Peanut butter on muy Braaain!!

    Nebraska

  • Elvin you are GREAT! I hear you are playing in Marin @

the Rancho Nicasio on 11/15!! Can't wait!! Looking

    forward to your show!!

    Shawnee

  • I've only seen two support acts compleatly destroy an opening act. 1- Dave Edmunds Rockpile made the Bad company faction think twice. 2- Elvin Bishop made everone wanna keep on dancin' and forget about Al Stewarts "Nostradamus"!! God bless Al,chaulk it up to bad promoters.

  • Good ole' music of the USA! Haven't heard this song in years. Saw him prancing around on stage doing Travelin' Shoes back in the seventies. He was having a good time, and so were we.

  • i have been looking for this video thanks.

  • i love this song

  • Cause it's got a funk like no other!!! :-)

  • I like your dad! Go dad!

  • And you don't? Did your Daddy drop you twice when you were little and managed to only catch you once?

  • This song rocks on down the road! love it!

  • Travlin shooz" is one na my top 5 tunes of all time as well.. seen Elvin play in,1979 a Tiny venue club show on a thursday night near the RI beachs and now the casinos in Eastern CT. I bet there were only 80 people in the club, wow!!

  • One of my favorite songs of all time. I saw Elvin Bishop live at Nelson ledges in 1975 in Ohio and man did he rock! I love this damn song it's my theme song. Got my travel in shoes on right now.. Right on Elvin!

  • evlin bishop is the man

  • this is one of my 5 "island" songs.

    never gets old.

btw named my parrot after Elvin some 28 years ago. Now HE was an asshole!

  • sometimes we all gotta put on our travellin shoes....

  • Elvin Bishop is playing @ The Marin county Faire 7/6/08

    at 4pm, can't wait!!

  • If you can't stand the heat get the fuck outta the kitchen and let those whom can cook do their cooking...............

  • So Elvin was a ladies man, good on him, if the opportunities are there, why not oblige. Great entertaining band, delicious female back up singers, yess sirr, as he would probably say. I saw them for the first time on Don Kirshners Concert and thought they were brilliant. Ive just about worn out the Let it Flow album from which this song is from.

  • He did have a thing for the "ladies", young and pretty. ;D

  • if you have the full version of juke joint jump you need to add it it rocks. oh and bobby wtf is your problem with elvin did he do your ol lady or somrthing

  • Actually I did his after they were divorce maybe you should go meet him for yourself He lives in Lagunitas calif

  • Good fun musician Terrible asshole of a human being Fool around and full of shit he is.

  • thank you Yoda, master of the obvious you are.

  • Not sure if you are being sarchastic or not but i have known him for 30 years plus so consider that.......Sorry if I burst your hero worship bubble.

  • 30 yrs is a long time to hold on to that angst dude.....let it go and take a deep breath

  • And, so, Bobby, what exactly did you accomplish by posting this info? If you don't get along with the guy, just avoid him. Grace and mercy, bro; grace and mercy.

  • Because I can That's why. Elvin is the real reason Jenny and Salina his family are dead. I was there and know the truth So just because you think hes this sensation musician WHICH HE IS Hes a SOB as a human being and trust me Im not alone on this one

  • I believe you. And I suspect that Elvin has offended you on multiple occassions. I hope you consider forgiving him. There's room for all at the foot of the cross. Been there; done that.

  • Your the first person on youtube that has gotten it 100% right with me. I did try to mend fences with Elvin several times but he has no conscience when it comes to his ego. Jenny and I were really great friends and our entire community loved her and her daughter Salina. My dad and Jenny were great pals as well. She was a warm wonderful women and after she died every one was asking WHY? Jenny came to me when Elvin screwed her over. She found a nekked lady in her closet. We were just friends

  • When artists experience success, things can come really easy to them - attractive suitors, money, thrills - and it really messes with thier head. They lose touch with God's Will for thier lives. Dion, Donna Summer, Charlie Daniels, Kerry Livgren and Dave Hope (Kansas), John Schlitt (Head East), Alice Cooper and a whole host of other artists figured it out and are now believers in Christ. I hope Elvin does, too. God bless you on this Christmas day, friend.

  • Yes! I have seen this many times but we are from a special world where we live It can not be described or given. You cna only experience it and the true spirit lies within all of us raised there. Elvin has always been an egotist. had you met Jenny you would understand She was a super lady. Everyone loved her She just had that perosnality. Elvin through it all away one night and blamed me for it. I actually didnt know about it until later. It was the nekked lady and he brought her into it MC & HN

  • @london2z Thanks for your comments. I once believed everything you said in your response. Then I actually cracked the Bible and read the New Testament. I dare you to do the same.

  • @Bobby61557 is this about the duffle bag murders????

  • @mydevilcat No its not!

  • Brilliant slide guitar !

    Thanks !

  • I saw the Elvin Bishop Band back in the mid 70's at the Georgian Terrace in Atlanta, across the street from the Fox Theater. Hard to stand still when these boys cut loose! Thanks for posting this, cb6931.

  • Elvin Bishop, WOW, he is so cool!

  • Thanks for posting!

KPIG plays lots of Elvin. Just heard a live cut of Rock My Soul yesterday.

Anyone know what ever happened to Jo Baker? She was one of the best vocalists I've ever seen/heard.

  • Good question Hash- she was with his band prior to the hits and even this one huh? I here this on KPIG AM 1510 in Marin Co. CA. the land of lawyers, doctors and Rancho Nicasio, the music hall close to E.B.'s dig in W.Marin.

  • Kshe 95 and K-Hits 96 in St.Louis play this one occasionally.

  • Try and keep still to this ! ! !

    Excellent... Mr.Bishop !

    Thank's for uploading.....

  • cool - great to hear this again!

    thanks.

  • Aw this is great!

  • Oh hell yes, it has been WAY too long since they played this on WMAL FM Wash DC! I just have to look up "Dr Hook and The Medicine Show" next. Anyway ya think he liked the "Allman Bros"?
