i have these little guys...again research most die from not getting enough food because of fish...i give mine frog and tadpole bites(formula for them) and blood worms...i have had them 8 years two in a tank with an octo.. and if you feed them enough they wont try to eat the octo....i have been able to have a mating pair and raised tadpoles. keep the tank clean they absorb everything...pet stores sell two in a small plastic tank with a bamboo shoot for kids..dont support this. research pet care
ok right off hand you make me thing you no nothing abought them cus the bigger the tank the bigger thay get. i have seed them get as big as a bullfrog and i have 2 right now that are over 3 inches.
African Dwarf Frogs DON'T EAT TURTLE PELLETS OR FISH FLAKES! They will STARVE if you feed them that. They need bloodworms or fish&tadpole bites, and if you want you can occasionally feed them brine shrimp or mysis shrimp.
1: i use to have two newts, but there dead, and when i had them i bought a floating dock. do you think its okay if i put it with my african dwarf frog? ( he lives alone)
2: up till when do they live, mine is already 6 years old.
@Blinx56 - No. The correct full common name for this frog is 'Dwarf African Clawed Frog' to distinguish it from its much larger cousin the African Clawed Frog.
It really does have tiny black claws on its hind legs...
Flake food is bad for the tank as most of the flake food will break up and pollute the water.
Feed these frogs tiny bits of raw fish flesh like Tilapia, salmon or earthworm, etc. Bloodworm is very low in nutrients and some people react very badly to it if they touch it. So rotate with processed food like TetraPrima pellets, but stay away from wheat based pellets as these swell up internally and can kill.
An adult frog (>1y) needs only feeding 3 times a week. Young need feeding daily.
I bought some from hallmark and they gave me special food for them. They told me to only feed them twice a week and to clean their take every three months.
@grizzly8889 really? i was told to feed mine every other day and to clean my tank like usual ( i clean it every saturday) and to feed them blood worms. but i guess thats because i have fish in my tank too
@sarahhaspowers - Actually they will if that is the only food provided and they're hungry enough. But it's not the right type! Far too much added calcium in Turtle food for frogs...
They like eating meat, so tiny worms, like White-worm or bits of raw fish flesh. Bloodworm has hardly any food value and is not a complete diet if the frog is fed just this. TetraPrima pellets is wolfed down as it is mainly meat based.
Again, Dwarf frogs and Clawed frogs are DIFFERENT species of frogs. Clawed frogs grow to be 5 inches and are very aggressive and freeze dried while in general wont cause problems but greatly increase the chances of causing bloat in frogs. Frozen blood worms are safer and easier to digest for the little guys.
@smileygriller Yeah, mine like TINY peices of cut-up veggies, but I also feed her freeze-dried bloodworms. =o] She likes tiny bits of cooked hamburger, too, as a treat, but they need bloodworms for a full meal.
@RogueSlayer Dwarf frogs are sometimes called Dwarf African Clawed Frogs. =o] But you're right. They can't live on the flakes. They won't be very healthy. I feed mine freeze-dried bloodworms.
@avoidthegreat your right about the 1.5 but you also need about .5 every frog also so
1 = 1.5 -------- 2 =3.5-------3= 5.5 and if you have fish then it aplies the same way with fish but certain fish need different amounts of space I hav 10 fish with 2 frogs a clawed and a green for about 1 in and 1.5 i dont know how they get along.
@USApunk07 I'd go for 4 gallons with 2 frogs. I have one, and my tank is 1.5 gallons. They are very energetic, so they need some room. I'm considering a larger tank for mine.
no no no no no no.!!! dont feed it human food. no meat or veg, only bloodworms, tubixworms ect. there arent for new aquarium hobbyests, you need experience with aquatic pets.
Mini - frogs...?? 1 inch...why bother ..it resticts what you can put in your tank too much...just my experience...2 tanks are good 1 for small things..1 for BIG things
I feed my frog minibloodworms and in one vid it said to feed it bloodworms 2 times a week but i feed it bloodworms everyday so im wandering how many times should i feed a day or a week
1. This is a African dwarf frog, not a clawed frog. NO adult fish will be big enough for him to eat.
2. They do not eat turtle pellets.
3. If your flakes reach the bottom before being consumed, you are overfeeding. If your frog is lucky enough to stumble upon a flake, he will most likely ignore it.
@PSNjizzcake ur a fing loser if u dont think a oscar datinoid or a pacu can eat a 1inch frog my oscar eats 3in fish along with lizards mice nightcrawlers an even toads
@rudbucket Retard I said no adult fish will be big enough for the FROG to eat. They guy was saying that an adult dwarf frog might eat a fish. Yes I would hope an Oscar is capable of eating a 1 inch frog
@PSNjizzcake - In my Yahoo group on DAFs we have had incidents where a DAF has tried to swallow a dwarf Oto head first and both animals die as the Oto has tiny barbs around its head so the frog can't shake the fish loose.
DAFs can't see much of anything under water and hunt by smell and vibration.
