Aspergers is a spectrum in itself, thus some people will be more mild than others, and Alex definitely has it. Any psychologist will tell you that; it's in his mannerisms, and speech, etc. Who says people with AS can never have a gf/bf? That's bullshit. It's much harder, but not impossible.

Furthermore, shyness is not part of the diagnostic criteria of AS. Some people with AS are actually the opposite; loud/self confident. This doesn't make them any less socially inept than the quiet ones.

Spectrum is right; sweeping generalisations help no-one. I've never been loud (I'm 35 now). I have always craved peace and quiet, and just to be left alone. If I want human contact, I seek it out; if I don't, I don't.

As for shyness; I'm not shy, I'm socially phobic and anxious! There's a huge difference between being shy and not knowing how enter and maintain a conversation, particularly with those you don't know well. Shyness is more about what you want to say than of the conversation itself.

Sure I want a gf, but this is a complex topic for many of us. I was in my 30's before my first and only (brief) relationship. I can appreciate how I could be a difficult person to love - it's neither my fault, nor their's - particularly if she's neurotypical. I will try to modify certain behaviours, like anyone entering a relationship, the core me must remain. I'll bend, but not break. While a little sad & lonely at times, it won't kill me to remain single. Either love me for me, or not at all.

@citcat299 I go through phases; there are times when I'm very withdrawn and do not care to socialize, and then there are times when I'm loud and confident, which sometimes comes across as arrogant to those who do not know me. I've been married for 22 years, so that refutes those who argue that Aspies cannot have decent relationships. Our 11 year old son has AS as well. I am currently in my last year of nursing school, and my husband has, fortunately, been very supportive of all my endeavors.

Asperger people are not all the same. Some have girlfriends and can talk in front of crowds just like some people without AS are terrified of speaking in front of crowds or don't have girlfriends/boyfriends. They all have social skill difficulties but the way that expresses itself varies from one person to the next. Sometimes asperger people find each other.
