  • i don't think he's right when he says the welfarist movement has not made things better.

it's better that farrowing crates and battery cages are being phased out in the EU.

it's better that temple grandin has designed cattle chutes that reduce vocalizations (a sign of stress) to almost nothing.

killing a happy being to eat it for taste is wrong, but it's incorrect to say these aren't improvements.

  • I often wonder how people understand these arguments and still aren't vegan. So few disagree with the propositions that lead to veganism; yet, so few adhere to it or even try. Talk about an extreme case of cognitive dissonance.

So few think it's nuturitionally sustainable; yet as a vegan and health enthusiast I can attest being vegan has not negatively affected me at all. I can deadlift 2x my bodyweight and do 20 pullups. I'm living proof it's possible and even easy.

  • great interview.... thanks

  • Thanks for this interview.

I'm abolitionist but I find it very difficult to discuss it with people. Not because I get insulting but people just think I'm an extremist oddball.

  • Really quite an airtight argument here. I'm running through the list of vegan essentials in my head right now.... It's pretty overwhelming. Might just have to give it a shot.

  • Gary is the best!

  • Well, after reading about the abolitionist philosophy more and more, I actually answered all of my own questions. Yes, PETA do their derogatory publicity stunts for the media, but did Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks ever say "I'd rather go naked than sit at the back of the bus", of course not. These were tenacious people with strong morals who promoted their cause through hard work. It's safe to say, I'm an abolitionist now. Thank you Francione.

  • Should I note, that I've personally been a vegan for the last month, and was a vegetarian for 6 years. I naturally came to the realisation myself that I was actually worse than the meat eater as long as I ate any animal products. While I can't say that I've ever heard of an AFL member that wasn't vegan, I now see that their method is fundamentally wrong, and now have more confidence that I can persuade a person through speech (although, combine it with 'Earthlings', and you're on a winner)

  • Well, it's been an hour, and this may be one of the single best interviews I've ever seen. I've always agreed with PETA, and still do on their fundamentals, but now I can see why their actions, and the actions of many other animal rights activists could be considered as wrong. I could still argue with Francione on some points, such as if PETA didn't use semi-naked women, or do the crazy things they do, would people even know they exist? PETA says it themselves, they do this crap for the media.
