  • Clem love your series. Boy would it be something if you could have that golfball tracker like on TV so we could see the flight of your shots.

  • Shawn , is the long iron game going away ? Is it a thing of the past ? I love my iron game. Most of my time at the range is spent on wedges and mid irons. I play at least one round a week leaving the woods in the car and playing with just irons. Most par 4s require you put 2 good long iron shots together to get on the green. Par 5s take 3 back to back good irons to be on the green. When using your woods you can make up for bad shots ,much harder to do when just using your irons. Thank you.

  • not a great swing for a teacher

  • @jingoducky What makes you say that?

  • @clemshaw arent you meant to keep the left arm straight through out the swing, also seems that you pick the club up during your take away. Just my personal observation. All in all i love all your videos and do take great tips from them, thanks

  • @jingoducky For someone that has subscribed to his channel and favorited his videos, that's an awfully stupid comment.

  • @jingoducky I have to disagree with you on this one. If you were to take snapshots of the swing, I believe that you will find that he is in good position throughout. Plus he's a top 25 CPGA teaching professional. He must be doing something right.

  • @Anheuser66 Thanks Man! If you want a fashion show, where you need to hit positions, don't look here. But if you want the most efficient swing for a human body on Planet Earth, you came to the right place! All the best to you and yours for the Holidays and the new year! Shawn

  • @jingoducky Arnold Palmer, Jim Thorp, Jim Furyk, Mo Norman etc don't have beautiful swings for a Pro but they definitely got the job done which is what I would trade in for a beautiful swing that didn't get the job done.

  • @jingoducky Shawn has a great teaching technique and a very good, consistent swing, IMHO. The only thing in Shawn's swing that I cannot see myself doing, is the pre-backswing right knee kick towards the ball. This is obviously something that helps Shawn get set, or ready to hit. Everyone's a critic! Thanks for the great vides, Shawn!

  • Shawn - great video. When you swing a hybrid more like an iron, do you play it further back in your stance than when you swing it from the fairway (more like a fairway wood)? Ball position with hybrids seems to be a constant struggle for me. Thx!

  • @terps2703 Thanks; and it would depend on the model hybrid you use; I find the Adams and Titleist can be played back like irons but the Callaway and certain Taylor mades that are very shallow faces need to hit more like a fairway wood;

    Shawn

  • great video Shawn. However, the only thing that i noticed was that you focused much more on hitting the hybrid or fairway wood rather than the long iron. It would be great if you did a video specifically for just the 2,3,4 irons possibly. It seems most vids that I find always just tell you to replace these clubs with hybrids which I don't ever plan on doing. Thanks!

  • @zDAVEYHAWKINSz if you find yourself needing to hit that club often and seem inconsistent with it sure. I bought one to replace my 3 iron. It brought more consistency and is very workable. Liked it so much I bought a hybrid 2 to match. These two clubs have added useful yardages to my game. Less wasted shots "laying up".....option to hit it off the tee usually leaving full clubs into greens with trouble up front..... easy to hit low shots on windy par 5s....endless possibilities lol.

  • first ball hit a tree =)) unlucky shawn

  • Is buying a hybrid worth the money if its just to replace 1 iron?

  • Heyy Shawn. Im writing from Ireland:)

I am 14 years old and I consistently struggle with get a good connection and height with my hybrids and 3 wood please give me a tip/reason as to why this could be and how can i correct this??

    Thanks Ross

  • i'm sure that ball hit a tree :')

  • im afraid if i try to deflect the golf club off the turf that ill accidentally strike the club to hard on the ground and damage the club. my brother has already broke the club head off of his old driver and his hybrid doing this. any suggestions to help out?

  • Hey Shawn, can you clarify where the ball should be positioned when using a hybrid? Should it be more like an iron, centered to slightly forward, or more like a fairway wood, off the left heel?

  • I carry a hybrid to replace my 5 wood but i still have a 2 iron because i can still hit it and a 2 hybrid against my 2 iron adds 10 yards that creates a 15 yard gap between clubs so i dont like to use my hybrids as iron replacements, they do good as wood replacements, but full swing it creates a gap

  • the hybrid should indicate the club is a mix between the iron and the fairway wood. if you've learned how to strike the ball well with the long irons and the fairway woods, you can experiment with that same mentality you'd use for them towards that hybrid. the beauty of the hybrid is it is about the furthest thing from a one trick pony. you'd be amazed of the plethora of shots available to you if you take some time to practice with it.

  • Hi Shawn, I like most of your instruction, it has been very helpful to find a swing I enjoy doing. I tried the 4 hybrid (21 deg) today in a park and for the first time with a small controlled swing and I hit the ball long, very straight and with a very nice ball flight. (200 - 220 m). The penny has finally dropped for me in the swing.

  • I put my right thumb in direct line with my right arm over the front of the club, stood in my stance without a tilt, weight evenly on both flat feet both angled out at 20 degrees; then swung 40% and the biggest adjustment was controlling my shoulders at impact to be parallel and trying to throw the club in line with the ball flight.

  • After impact continue to rotate my body in the follow through. Before I was rotating my shoulders fully back and in the down swing rotating both hips and shoulders as much as possible and in doing this coming accross the ball and slicing it to China. The rotating of the shoulders has to be very controlled in the swing and in me finding this out from looking at Hogan, Austin, Dunaway, Nicholas, Norman and others.

  • After this I hit a 5 wood 240 m to a target and landed after 1 bounce to within 5 feet directly in line. At impact I automatically had a natural tilt with a feeling of all the weight on my left side and I could feel the powerful compression on the ball coming back through my hands from the club.

  • I felt that the swing was effortless but have a bit of a sore right finger bewteen the nuckle and the first joint. I think I have found the best swing for me and I feel you should make a video of how important it is in to keep the shoulders in line with the target at impact and how to achieve this consistantly.

  • With my correct grip, controlled shoulder rotation, stance, and slightly tense arms; I felt at the release of my downswing a feeling of total power over the ball and that I was going to crush it. My backswing was only 3/4. After I perfect my swing to a full backswing and 65% power, I will hit you one of my balls from Australia.

  • Thanks for all your videos and now I have confidence to incorporate this swing in all my shots. The only bad thing is now I will definately have to find a much bigger park, he he. That little white ball has been a devil up to today. I cant wait to play my brother again now after losing to him by 14 shots in 18 holes last time. I will try my new swing with a pretilt and see what happens too.

  • My hybrid is now my favourite club. When I started golf 2 years ago I could not hit a 3 iron in the air and put divots 6 inches from the ball and lost one or more balls every 2nd hole as well as woodcutting from one side to another; very fustrating but now funny.

Shawn, if possible make some more tip videos for drivers and try to put in a slow motion of your swing for each video as this is the way I found my good swing.

    Gary from Australia.

  • whats roughly the distance on a hybrid?

  • @alanyates23 Well, they make hybrids to replace mid to long irons; so your 5 hybrid should go the distance of the 5 iron and so on; they are designed to fly a bit higher and get more spin to keep the ball in the air longer for the person who is not getting the maximum benefit from their long irons or who prefers the look and feel of the hybrid.

  • Terrific golf videos. I come to you for all my lessons.

  • I just got a hybrid, and i can get it off the ground, it goes maybe 50 yards if that. It also shanks. any good tips?

  • okay. i just got a titleist 909 hybrid and i cannot get it off the ground what so ever, and when he do it shoots off to the right, got any tips?

  • Shawn, i hope theres no houses to the right of your driving range buddy!

  • Shawn, do we use the same thumbrule with iron-hybrids as well: to trap or sweep based on the lie? I see you're using more of a wood-like hybrid, hence the question. I interested in understanding how to hit the longer iron-hybrids 3 & 4 with the progressive sole thickness.

  • @aswamy2 Yes; great way to go;

    Shawn

  • shawn, you are clearly the man.

  • Shawn great video , i still carry a 3 iron but i have a 17 degree hybrid ,, it was for about 1 year the easiest club to hit in my bag now im hitting the ball high and right , im going to try the elbow move youve demonstrated ,, i am definitely getting my weight too far to the left before impact , thanks much for this great tip

  • great videos. ever think about doing a video podcast in iTunes? that would be awesome.

  • This was a tremendous. You are an excellent teacher.

  • Shawn, great work, love your videos! But I'm unclear about the difference between the two techniques (iron-like descending and wood-like skipping). Is the difference between ball placement, swing plane, or spine tilt? Or what ?

    Thanks

  • No no, none of the above; we are talking about a feel here; if you want to trap the ball, go ahead; if you want to sweep the ball, go ahead! It will also depend on the lie as well because if the ball is sitting up, you want to sweep it to not pop it up and if the ball is sitting down, you definitely want to trap it; therein lies the versatility of the hybrid! Shawn

  • Wow I never knew you can hit the hybrid in different ways! Thanks Shawn!

  • marvelous video! kudos!

  • do you wear or recomend oakley sunglasses? thanks

  • yeah they are good only if they are real ones

  • I wear the cheaper "sundog" line; Hunter Mahan's model!

I keep scratching and loosing them too often! LOL Shawn

  • Hi, mm i have a question about what to hit in this situation: Im in a bunker with 150-170 yards to the green what i should use? Hybrid?

  • Depends how far you hit a hybrid and if the lip of your bunker is (very) low.

  • Priority number 1 is to clear the lip! if you can and you have a good lie, go for it! But practice a few times on the range where they have a fairway bunker...:) Shawn

  • Great Video.

I never understood what the Hybrid was for until this video. Very useful. So, is that the only time someone could use this club, is if the ball is in the rough? Or could someone use it as a fairway wood? Thanks Shawn

  • Yes i use a hybrid as a Rough or Fairway wood and it is brilliant for both.

  • You can use it in any situation; fairways is wide open for business! :) Shawn

  • Shouldn't a hybrid get the ball up in the air more easily, because of the weight and the centre of gravity? Oh, and please, please make a video on putting grip, please :)

  • thanks for the vid mate i play at willows golf club in aus and i can never hit my 3 wood high and straight off the fair way i left this comment before viewing the vid so maybe you could help me when i swing the bal goes up and pushes right down to the ground within about 10 metres is this the spin i put on the ball? thanks

  • Hey Deanus; I must have missed your comment...sorry about that! What you are doing here is topping the snot out of it; :)

Which gives it big top spin...Keep practicing the firm skip through the ball and check out the 2 ball drill in the "Golf Pro Lesson Through the ball" video...Shawn

  • it is easy to understand him

  • Thanks Shawn for explaining the fairway wood and hybrid. I'm a lady beginner golfer in Australia and when I learnt we didn't practice either. When I got my bag of clubs I didn't know what they were used for. When I tried using them I would fluff the shot, lose confidence and go back to using my irons usually taking three or more shots to get to the green. I practiced with both clubs on the driving range today.

I feel a little more confident about using them in my game in future. Thanks again.

  • No Problem!

  • hi shawn. great videos. being a short person (5'7) how much of a spine tilt would i need. i've been working a lot on my posture but when i try the spine tilt it feels different. thanks.

  • Hey and thanks for your comment and question;

On my website, you will find my blog page; I recently posted on last month Golf Digest and Leadbetter's crips irons article and described how you go about adjusting tilt to width of stance...just be patient for the download as I am trying to reduce the file size...I should have that done by the weekend; Shawn

  • peter kostis says that you still want to feel that your hitting down the ball even with the fairway woods, its just that you stand further away from the ball and the design of the club which sends it higher watch?v=Jfsrpu01Kwg

  • how do you hit the ball higher with an iron? i've tried puttin it further forward in my stance, but i either fat it becasue the bottom of my swing is b4 the ball, or i try so hard to get to the ball, i end up covering the ball and hitting it lower! any tips for hitting it higher with my irons?

  • For me, I will put the ball slightly forward in my stance, and sometimes open up the club face a tiny bit, but very importantly I concentrate on not sliding my body forward. Still hit down on the ball, but the loft should be a bit higher at impact.

  • Hey Shawn.. love the posts. Quick question... right before you take your backswing, you shift to the left very slightly in a very pronounced way. is this just habit, or does it do something for the balance?

  • There is a very important purpose to this..."Golf Pro Lesson Routine" has the answer...Shawn

  • just what i was looking for! im gonna use this on the course next time

  • shawn i have a question bout my swing if you could help me i would appreciate i have a draw on all my clubs... but when it comes to my driver i hook the ball badly, even my long irons they draw slightly, but when it comes to the driver dont know why but i hook it bad, would have any idea why i know its hard b/c you have not seen my swing but any imput would be helpful and appreciated thanks again...

  • Check out the driver tip 2 and the Through the ball videos; also, you are swinging too hard too soon; so look at the transitions video too;

    Shawn

  • hey shawn just had a ? bout where to place the ball with the hybrid and fairway wood.. do you still want us to place the center of the club head in the middle of our stance and the ball just foward of that with the fairway wood and the hybrid? thanks

  • Yes! Very Good!

    Shawn

  • Wish you were in Kitchener!

  • Thanks for posting Shawn.
