Actualy the video is based on the footage of Walter Ruttman, Berlin: Symphony of a Great City. Gondry based upon that vilm to make chemical brother's videoclip.
Hi, this is a great video! I do 3D graphics and I am also interested in video editing and I have to say that your short video is very good. 2 days? Amazing!! I was absolutely fascinated by the original video and I simply did not know how they did it. Too bad there's no documentary about the post production.
Not bad at all. Most of the original video was done with 3d elements tho. Try a 3d tracker, voodoo's free and pretty good. then you can place all those cool trains and buildings and stuff
Thats whats cool about Cg. most of the objects that create the beat are 3d. If you watch it again you will see the exact same objects over and over again.Good job at faking it tho, and I'm sure there is a bit of your way in their too
If they were CG there wouldn't be so much floating and shadows sharply cuted everywhere. We put a page together with the locations and errors: furrtek$.free$.fr$/index$.php?p$=crea&a$=starguitar
We think that all the objects really exists, but we can't figure out how they got the far background planes with no objects in front of it...
cool. I think the background would be the easiest part, just a matte background looped. It's the same for the people, there is a guy with a red jacket who you see again and again. Its a tough one to figure out completely
'The video is based on DV footage Gondry shot while on vacation in France; the train ride (between Nîmes and Avignon) was shot ten different times during the day to get different light gradients.' - source Wikipedia.
Interesting. We knew about the locations (we placed a few spots on google maps), but not about the number of shots. Too bad there's no picture of the camera setup he had in the train.
sorry to say it, but i don't think you really caught on to the sophistication of gondry's piece. all of your elements were simple side-swipes and were not worked into the landscape.
sorry to be a downer, but star guitar is WAY more advanced than you are portraying it here. please stop kidding yourself into thinking you've got gondry sussed
I just read the description 4 times, but nothing does it. I still don't understand why do you think I'm actually comparing the quality of this thing with Gondry's work.
Please stop thinking I'm pretentious without knowing.
i had already heard of after effect by a friend using it but i didn't know that in only two days of work with your equipment you would be able to do such à thing !
The render is really realistic (even if there are some details not perfect of course).
I understand better now how Michel Gondry have done the original video
Thanks! Like I said in another comment, you can do much better in less time with AE6 and a DV camera (I used a cheap Canon A530), with 20fps and 320x240 you can't have sharp enough images to clearly cut out objects...
Also there's timing errors with the bridges near the end, that was to avoid the old AE5 bugs with time stretch, and also because Trapcode SoundKeys was an ass and crashed randomly while analysing.
so i was thinking. what i think u did was u caught the objects passing by, then cut that out, and put and sequence a green masking around it, render, then place it on the vid. am i right?
Good attempt at demonstrating the whole concept behind Gondry's STAR GUITAR video, but well... your video goes to show where all that special equipment, expensive cameras and rendering servers come in handy, your video only seems to sync one element with the music, the pole.
Yeah, like I said, I can't stay on the same project alone for two months. And I can't afford expensive software and cameras... In fact, there's 5 background loops, and 3 almost synched elements (got desynch on reencoding for youtube)
And to those people who just bemoan that your 2 days of work on inferior equipment doesn't stand up against the months of work put in by the original team.
It DOES work as a proof of concept. I do 3D animation and I am very impressed!
And you're right, I'm not saying that this is equal to the work of Michael Gondry and his production team. His animation is all about precision cutting, timing and perspective adjustment, this video shows what can be done in two days with a digicam and a common computer, not a $1800 DV Cam, 20 people and four rendering servers...
Good try, but it's really nothing like star guitar. You'd need to shoot like 8 different train rides. Each element is composited in separately, which is what makes the original so amazing. Every light pole, every building, and even the path of the train tracks are very carefully timed. Try going more in depth like that.
Your video only manipulates the image on a 2 dimensional plane. If you look at the star guitar video you will see that the planes used for the chimneys and bridges are separate and pan off from the train track. In fact they even bend as they fade away. So I don't feel convinced.
If I had a little more time and a -good- video (like DV, the one used for this video was taken in MJPEG), I think I would have done the effort to do 3D synchronisations. Working with compressed video at 20fps is tiring...
It's not that hard to do, but it takes a lot of time and practice to make it all look perfect and slick. But you've got it going on fairly. Keep up the good work! =D
I may have to one up this oneday LOL great job

your splicing sucks thought you can see where you just stuck each scene, booo

@CzarThePlezer I agree with you about that. Didn't match the speed of all the scenes before cutting them.

Very Cool. I had been guessing the clip was done in CG rendering rather than video recording. Thanks for sharing your excellent work!

So, it would be a matte scrolling on a wide curved plane or something ?
And it seems all the people at the station are looped.

Damn impressive. Have always been blown away by Star Guitar, but to do this on a low-end setup (in relative terms)... simply stunning.
