Hearing this demo pulls you from the flaps of your mullet and takes you right back to that crazy decade. The Yamaha DX7 and the Korg Poly 800 both drew the musical landscape of the 80s.
From 3:13 to about 3.47 just gives me goosebumps when I hear it!! This instrument had a HUGE effect on me as a young child growing up in the 80s! I Love It!
I used to program DX7 sounds a long time ago, my company was "Soundvertrieb" Germany, we were present at Musikmesse Frankfurt 1983 and 1984, we got a lot of incredible sounds for that inovative Syth at this time, You can call me in Germany 0172-4522859
This guy can really play and makes the DX7 sound as good as all the hype that surrounds its legend. Some of the pad sounds on this demo sound huge. Defying the notion that the MK 1 DX7 cant sound big/fat. As always it comes down to the individual.
@ Randman, the best way to approach the DX7 is edit the patches. You will be surprised how many different tones you can get from a single patch. One of the areas to concentrate on in the edit menu are THE EG PARAMETERS. They can really change the charactor of the sounds. They are the equivalent of the ATTACK---DECAY knobs on the old analogues. As an example. I own the DX7S synth. And out of one bass patch got the best sounding claves you will ever hear plus a cosmic sitar with endless sustain.
I was just randomly given a DX7 the other day! It works perfectly, but was clearly under-appreciated, because there's layers of dust on it. Super excited to get started with this thing, but I have no idea how the hell to program it, haha. Anyone got tips/resources I can use?
That xylophone/bell sound at the beginning is what I always associate the DX7 with. It makes me think of those generic 80s movie scenes where the teenage boy and teenage girl are alone together in the woods sharing a passionate talk.
@senorverde09 The very first sound which appears at the beginning is a common electric piano, and yes it was featured in a ton of 80's and 90's films. It is sometimes combined with other synthesizers as well, like strings or pads. I think it sounds great, very chime-ish. = ) Great tones.
@PopCulture20 As an owner of an original DX7, I love it! Sure, it's a real pain to program and it's quite involved trying to figure out how to get the perfect sounds out it, but there's thousands upon thousands of transferable MIDI patches on the web that can make any 80s pop culture nut pleased. From it's punchy bass to it's clangy Rhodes electric piano emulation (heard at the beginning), the DX7 is as cool as taking a drive in a Testarossa down the Miami strip under the setting sun.
@senorverde09 Oh man I was listening to this and I was thinking the same thing. "Son, it's okay that you sometimes make mistakes. But learn from them and I won't be disappoint."
Mate the incredible warmth and brilliance of the first half of the clip is only eclipsed by the horror of the second. I still love it though, good work.
I can't even really play the keyboard/piano very well...but god I want this so much, I'd just play with this for hours. The epic sounds, ahhh they're so great! If the 80's were one instrument they'd be this!
@nokia3210fuck The SY77/TG77/SY99 all have a few more FM algorithms and the algorithms as such are not exactly the same as on the DX-series (including up to 3 feedback slopes on the SY/TG). But I remember that there was a conversion software available for ATARI ST as there was a "free algorithm"-function accessable via MIDI. While searching for the name of that software I just found the SY Manager SYM3 from FM Alive for PC (Win 2000/XP/Vista/7) which also can import and convert DX-files.
@wrabit79 The DX7 is very easy to find, it was one of the most sold and produced synthesizers ever made. You usually can steal one for about 250. I got mine for 300 and installed a patch memory expander to bring my internal patches to 128.
I really would like to get one of these, I enjoy playing Smalltown Boy on my keyboard but if I had an 80s Synth I could try and recreate that magic sound
Totally dig the time machine aspect of the DX-7. Takes me back to all those great movie moments from the 80's. Also reminds me of why I love 80's music. I totally love analog synths from the 60's and 70's. Nothing beats them for the sounds they make. But a DX-7 makes sounds that are truly of their own time.
Typical, The Japanese way ahead of us with FM in 1983. But this must be said I LOVE the DX7, how it sounds and how it looks. FM music from the 80s is magical!
@namco21gamefreak You might not be aware of this, but FM synthesis was actually invented in the USA, in Stanford University. Yamaha only licensed it to use for their products.
That's some awesome keyboard playing, my friend. Great job demonstrating the sounds. I've never owned one of these gems, but I'd love to get my hands on one of them. Thanks for posting!!
Remember, this keyboard was released in 1983. You can't compare it to anything that exists today. The mere fact that it was POLYPHONIC was amazing! cheesy doesn't exist? Mozart couldn't make a DX7 sound good. Playing blues on this piece of shit is like playing classical with a fucking kazoo. Although herbie hancock was able to get some good string sounds out of it, he's a genius with digital synths. I HATE digital sound sources but herbie makes that korg Oasys sound sick.
@34672rr You sir, wouldn't know an awesome timbre if it hit you in the forehead.
With digital Synthesized instruments comes a whole world of possibilities that are only limited by your creativity.
Why do you think people who play video games dislike games using orchestral music and trying to be like movies? Because it's an overused medium that is generic and has no originality.
@fonarte I can't believe I'm actually engaging you after that reply, but I'm bored. I am an analog synth/keyboard player. I try my hardest to get good sounds out of my Moogs, but even how awesome they are, only about %10 of their sounds are usable to me. People who play video games don't know music for sht, trust me I've worked as a tester for 2 years. The audio guys werent gamers, and the gamers were not musicians. I'm sure there are exceptions, but if you're a serious musician,
@fonarte time playing video games. The DX7 and Casio FZ line were the heat back in the day, but they are beyond dated at this point, and have no redeeming quality that will bring them back like the analogs do. Granted I have ONCE and only ONCE got a patch to sound awesome out of a FZ, but only once in the 3-4 years I had it. To this day I have not heard a digital sound source (not sample) that sounded even palatable. DX7 is THE CHEEEEEESE MACHINE!
@34672rr Sounds to me like you're just not very skilled as a programmer. The DX7, like all synths, is capable of a hell of a lot, but you analogue devotees ALWAYS approach it the wrong way
:) the kind of guy that would surely be working in a music store... everything sounds good... because he's a brilliant performer :) - then you go home and it sounds crap ;Þ
You are right...even a so called cheesy FB01, or one of those early cheapie Casio calculator synths, can become musically useful in the hands of someone with imagination ehough to 'wring the most out of it'. I am now buying a TX7 for %50, it's previous owner apologizing for it's cheesiness. Maybe I just love cheese, especially vintage cheese, I don't know. Whatever the case, it will find it's way into a project. Thumb's up to your demo.
@wickmanblue Cheesy Casio? Give me a break, the CZ-1, VZ-1, FZ-1 and all are not cheesy by any means. In fact, they are all super sweet. And so are the DX7, D-50, M1, and Nord Lead. These are all probably still the best synths of all time.
@dvamateur I was referring to the even earlier VL TONES, before the CZ1 came along. And yes, the best synths of all time came from that period. Although I do use soft synths, I haven't swung over completely, and still use hardware...the M1, Wavestation, DX7, actually, TX7. Was using NI's FM7 and , very nice, but somehow felt something was...is missing. Nope...no cheese in these.
@cornkite123 Something is missing? Of course, how about the physical look and feel of the instrument. To guitar players the looks and feel are the critical factors. Why not for keyboard players? Why is the audio business not getting it?
@dvamateurThe audio industry not getting it? For the same reason the music industry doesn't get it. I replaced a Korg Wavestation with the soft version and discovered that I wanted the original back. The sounds are all there, in soft, but the response is not really the same. If you haven't touched the real thing you'll never know the difference.
@Filthdrive You can of course programm you're own patches. And ya you can get sounds along the lines you're describing out of it.... FM synthesis isn't the easiest synthesis to work with though few people really use it a lot....
@VacTrooper Then tell me how! because TX7 arrived yesterday and im stuck lol but im waiting on a breakout cable "midi ins, outs" so i can plug it in and use an editor like sounddiver or somthin to program it.
@Filthdrive You need some type of MIDI Controller. Get a keyboard controller to play riffs or ideas into a DAW, and then you can edit this music in the DAW to make it work for you. There are some RAW sound possibilities, and literally millions of patches out there you can download for FREE... Just Google it! :D
DX7 had some really crap presets and some presets that where amazing and why it's the synth heard on practically every 80's movie soundtrack.. I truly believe it's the hardware that creates new genre's of music, not the musician. 808 created Hip Hop. 909 Created house. 303 created Acid house. DX7 created 80's pop music. Electric guitar created rock&roll.
that was 2nd keyboard i had got, it was amazing specially when you play the voice number 11; E.Piano or 21; vibs or 30; voice .... thank you man you are great
Listening to this demo makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, the DX7 makes some awesome sounds. Would pay ten grand to be able to play like this fella.
@HolyKatana Thanks man, i've been trying to find one since im gonna play alot of instruments mainly for christian music, i have a family friend who owns one and it sounds really good, considering that i love music
just google for "synthzone sy77" and "synthzone tg77" and you will find almost every dx7 patches on the net available at /midi/yamaha (dx7,dx7II etc...)
These are sysex files and you need to send them via a midi interface to the DX7.
My mind is contaminated with images of Tom Cruise in tight leather daisy dukes in Ridley Scott's "Legend".

MsSnowblood 11 months ago
:) the kind of guy that would surely be working in a music store... everything sounds good... because he's a brilliant performer :) - then you go home and it sounds crap ;Þ
Bangsi456 11 months ago
Wonderful sounds! Is this a factory memory card (if so, which one is it?!) or did you program this sounds yourself?? Thanks
tobibarnet 11 months ago
Love your sounds! Send me your memory card :P

Thumb's up to your demo.
wickmanblue 11 months ago
@wickmanblue Cheesy Casio? Give me a break, the CZ-1, VZ-1, FZ-1 and all are not cheesy by any means. In fact, they are all super sweet. And so are the DX7, D-50, M1, and Nord Lead. These are all probably still the best synths of all time.
dvamateur 11 months ago
@dvamateur I was referring to the even earlier VL TONES, before the CZ1 came along. And yes, the best synths of all time came from that period. Although I do use soft synths, I haven't swung over completely, and still use hardware...the M1, Wavestation, DX7, actually, TX7. Was using NI's FM7 and , very nice, but somehow felt something was...is missing. Nope...no cheese in these.
cornkite123 11 months ago
@cornkite123 Something is missing? Of course, how about the physical look and feel of the instrument. To guitar players the looks and feel are the critical factors. Why not for keyboard players? Why is the audio business not getting it?
dvamateur 11 months ago
@dvamateurThe audio industry not getting it? For the same reason the music industry doesn't get it. I replaced a Korg Wavestation with the soft version and discovered that I wanted the original back. The sounds are all there, in soft, but the response is not really the same. If you haven't touched the real thing you'll never know the difference.
cornkite123 11 months ago
The sweet sounds of the DX7. I miss that keyboard so much.

I remember trying this since some years ago. All the sounds sound fat.
Now keyboards are all about bad samples surrounded by enhancers, reverbs and all post processing garbage.

I really really wanted one of these when I was a kid.
The keyboard that defined the 80s.

doesnt this make any acid/ techno saw sounds or is it just church/hotel music?
Filthdrive 1 year ago
@Filthdrive You can of course programm you're own patches. And ya you can get sounds along the lines you're describing out of it.... FM synthesis isn't the easiest synthesis to work with though few people really use it a lot....
DiscoHunchback 1 year ago
@Filthdrive hahaha, great question! i have a TX7 (a DX7 module) and they are GREAT for techno, this thing can be pretty filthy
VacTrooper 1 year ago
@VacTrooper Then tell me how! because TX7 arrived yesterday and im stuck lol but im waiting on a breakout cable "midi ins, outs" so i can plug it in and use an editor like sounddiver or somthin to program it.
Filthdrive 1 year ago

Listening to this demo makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, the DX7 makes some awesome sounds. Would pay ten grand to be able to play like this fella.

I think the soundtrack to the original Starcraft game used a lot of DX7 sounds, especially in the Terran missions

at mc donalds
nokia3210fuck 1 year ago
@EJH10154 eBay. They're extremely cheap, since most people hate them. They're great synths, but the presets haven't aged well at all.

just google for "synthzone sy77" and "synthzone tg77" and you will find almost every dx7 patches on the net available at /midi/yamaha (dx7,dx7II etc...)
These are sysex files and you need to send them via a midi interface to the DX7.
