I worked in medicinal manufacturing and we used to use Sodium Hydroxide all the time, it's actualy not that bad when you get used to using it. The only thing is it really sting your throat when you heat it up. like a chillie of fire.
is there a way to obtain clear liquid sodium hydroxide? it seems like it corroded the steel a little and turned itself brown. what kind of substance is completely resistant to sodium hydroxide corrosion?
@r77xxl The can used looks like it was coated with epoxy. I'll venture that the epoxy coating is turning brown and chipping away under the action of intense heat and NaOH.
@r77xxl You could use platinum cans (they're usually just for that) but have much fun paying for them. I think clay could also work but not sure if the aluminium oxides in it are attacked.
I've used a hot-dog as an analog for a human finger to show the dangers of high voltage. What do you believe would happen if you placed a piece of a hot-dog in the molten sodium hydroxide? Would it just dissolve it, or end up spitting and splattering all over the fume hood?
@elflordbob1 im also 13 years old i have made potassium nitrate smoke bombs, molten potassium chlorate and suger, thermite, i made red iron oxide. i have a ball mill with steel and lead grinding material, etc. so that put your experiment to shame!
well its time we realize we are mortal enemies and rivals so we must always competete against each other in carrer...im gonna be a inorganic chemistish
also, make a video where you show us what that stuff does to flesh by pooring some on some pork with the skin still on it, we need these answers so we dont have to take the risk ourselves ;D
@briantonysmith As it is a base (I think it's called a base in english, no idea. Its pH is above 7), it can dissolve fats really well. How do you think NaOH dissolves the fats in drains? It just so happens that the membranes of your cells are mostly composed of fats, and some proteins. Do the math. Or... chemistry?
@briantonysmith react it with acid and wash it down the drain. reacting with acid neutralises it and the sodium becomes a salt (e.g. HCl reacts to form H2O and NaCl)
Of course, you'd have to filter it and get rid of pieces of glass + remove silicate impurities...
Most environmentally friendly way would be to distil the water and recover the salt or something.
today in class we used solid NaOH, and damn that stuff is very corrosive, some of it went in contact with my glove while i was adding it to a solution, and a single piece turned my glove orange from the corrosion and i had a slight burn feel in my finger.
@TerminalRhinoVirus No - only molten NaOH can 'eat' glass so quickly. It could take years for an aqueous solution to make any noticeable damage to glass.
Hydroflouric Acid: You read my mind....Could you please tell me the specifics of why its so toxic? It's, in minute amounts, in a brand of rust remover that does the same thing at 3%...I do not want to see 100%......(yes i do)
@nurdrage i hope you can answer me i want to make lithium carbonate and i was thinking if i neutralized sulfuric acid with lithium hydroxide id get lithium sulfate and then while thats in solution i neutralize it with baking soda to get lithium carbonate can someone plzzzzzz tell me if this is a plausible approach your answer will be much appreciated

All you need is some of this in a spray bottle to get through glass doors. Then some stuff that you can store in a spray bottle that eats away Bank valuts real fast lol. He sounds like the guy off the SAW movies uh oooo lol.
So you're saying that you can just wash your hands at any given time without having to lug a bunch of soap around?? That's incredible! When are they going to start marketing this breakthrough?
@BlackMasterRoshi they wont market it, but your theory is partially correct, but when the oils on your skin is gone, its exposed to a very corrosive chemical, so i wouldnt encorage it.
@BlackMasterRoshi if you want to clean your bones, use hydrogen peroxide, that what they use to whiten fossil, animal skulls .etc :D good luck with that!
@oglow100 its more from the heat. the heat does not melt the glass but it is a catalyst. also the surface of the glass has the potential to be completely covered when the sodium hydroxide is liquid.
@waragainstgreed technically heat isn't a catalyst, but it does increase reaction rate, only because it excites the atoms/molecules to move at a faster rate which increases the amount of collisions between particles so that things happen faster. Catalysts are usually transition metals, but in bio they can be enzymes. Not too sure on the bio catalysts, but catalysts would be over the yield sign in the chemical formula where heat would be on the left side in joules.
@oglow100 : A bit of both, basically. Higher temperatures generally increase rates of reaction, as particles have greater kinetic energy (move around faster), they are more likely to be brought into contact with each other. Particles in a liquid move around more freely than in a solid and so are more likely to be brought into contact with particles from a substance immersed in it. Bringing two solids into contact with each other only allows a tiny portion of their surface to make contact. :)
I can't decide if I want this guy to say, "Glass is no match for the dark side of the force" or "Boris and Doris, your mission will be to dissolve a glass vial in lye slag". Interesting vid though!
@NurdRage about glass, i dont think youve done this before so:

you should totally put some flesh in there. obviously people i mean like a chicken leg or something that has already been dead. possibly like a piece of chicken from the store. again for people who are not using their brain just re-read what i just typed.
@ainsleywainsley : Yes, masking is common. As well as abrasive techniques like sand blasting, acid etching is employed commercially to render logos and designs on glass; frosting on decorative mirrors and window panes, for instance. Masking can also be used to etch designs into coloured laminations to create more complex designs (such as white flowers etched onto a coloured glass surface - where the coloured glass lamination has been etched to reveal uncoloured glass beneath). :)

@bloodxx54321xxblood Hydrochloric acid isn't that dangerous and honestly I've used it in chemistry without gloves. He's warning about HydroFLUORic acid, which is one of the most dangerous substances known to man, will destroy human flesh on contact and has a relatively low boiling point, so if even a droplet is out of place, a building has to be evacuated. Nasty stuff.
