my parents were personally effected by a hurrican a few years back: 2005? They sat in their garage and horrored at the roof being lifted from the house. They had a FEMA trailer and have recovered; which is not penultimate to the story I just appreciate them more now than pre-storm. Might have been Hurricane Erin.

Second of all, people live there because it's such a good spot for fishing and trading. This could have happened anywhere, it just happened to strike this area. Telling people to move because a hurricane might hit is like saying don't drive because you might get in an accident. It's worth the risk.

Hurricane Katrina is living proof that Americans only care about the suffering of others for about 3 days. Then it's back to, "oh, dumbasses shouldn't have lived in a bowl".
Or maybe we shouldve stepped up and helped them like we do everytime some boy in Africa starves. But what did we do for New Orleans? Sent em some trailer homes, let rioters have a field day, and send help about a week late.
@GDuff123 I think the difference is that a boy in Africa is helpless. The people in New Orleans are not. Also the scale of the disaster in New Orleans was much bigger than people thought, so even though we had every intention of helping, the response was too little, too late. It was a time thing, not necessarily a matter of caring or not.
Billions and billions of dollars in aid went to New Orleans, and much of that was squandered by the locals. So don't act like Americans don't care.
@GDuff123 One example of that is the FEMA debit cards that were handed out. The majority of the money was spent on nonessential items, such as Playstations and strippers.
I remember when I got to go clean up in Mississippi after Katrina and ridia hurricanes, it was so sad but it is true these people had strength, it was inspiring. I was so sad to see them hurt again by the oil spill, I wish these people the best of luck!

Get over it! I live in Florida and we have been hit by like 20x as many Hurricanes (and way worse ones not to mention Katrina hit Florida first) but you don't hear Floridians bitching about it. Everyone in the hurricanes path had more than 3 days to get out of the way... it wasn't like it came out of nowhere
@Xtremename Yes you get hit by many more Hurricanes but mostly Cat 1 and 2's. Mississippi also gets hit a lot but you never hear about them. Katrina was a cat 2 when it hit Florida causing min. damage. It was a cat 5 when it hit Mississppi. The last cat 5 that hit florida was Andrew back in 1992 and I still hear people from Florida bitching about that one!!

Second of all, people live there because it's such a good spot for fishing and trading. This could have happened anywhere, it just happened to strike this area. Telling people to move because a hurricane might hit is like saying don't drive because you might get in an accident. It's worth the risk.

Or maybe we shouldve stepped up and helped them like we do everytime some boy in Africa starves. But what did we do for New Orleans? Sent em some trailer homes, let rioters have a field day, and send help about a week late.

@GDuff123 I think the difference is that a boy in Africa is helpless. The people in New Orleans are not. Also the scale of the disaster in New Orleans was much bigger than people thought, so even though we had every intention of helping, the response was too little, too late. It was a time thing, not necessarily a matter of caring or not.
Billions and billions of dollars in aid went to New Orleans, and much of that was squandered by the locals. So don't act like Americans don't care.

I remember when I got to go clean up in Mississippi after Katrina and ridia hurricanes, it was so sad but it is true these people had strength, it was inspiring. I was so sad to see them hurt again by the oil spill, I wish these people the best of luck!

Get over it! I live in Florida and we have been hit by like 20x as many Hurricanes (and way worse ones not to mention Katrina hit Florida first) but you don't hear Floridians bitching about it. Everyone in the hurricanes path had more than 3 days to get out of the way... it wasn't like it came out of nowhere

@Xtremename Yes you get hit by many more Hurricanes but mostly Cat 1 and 2's. Mississippi also gets hit a lot but you never hear about them. Katrina was a cat 2 when it hit Florida causing min. damage. It was a cat 5 when it hit Mississppi. The last cat 5 that hit florida was Andrew back in 1992 and I still hear people from Florida bitching about that one!!
