  • just been up there today, where they did alot of the filming , along the road down there at silverton, broken hill .. awsome museum,

  • Most Expensive, I thought the film was made for about 4 Million?

That was the most expensive back then? Thats less than The Godfather?

And howcome it only made back a 5th of what the original made?

I thought that Sequels usually made back more ?

  • @xaxie1 It was the most expensive Australian movie. The cars cost a fortune down there.

  • those stunts are the best ever!!!!! almost deadly!!!

  • Mad Max 2 is brilliant!

  • yep those stuntmen sure have BIG BALLS

  • Hahahaha Thats my dad! (Guy Norris)

  • That's brutal filmmaking! .....but these are some of the best actions scenes ever made. The risks payed off in the long run. The better directors of today would have to resort to fancy camera work to get even remotely close to being as good as the old fashioned Mad Max masterpiece. No stuntman today wants to risk getting killed like those guys did back then.

  • @Lex5576 Your wrong. Death Prof was every bit as dangerous as this, and there are plenty of other movies over the past ten years that use real stunt frivers doing dangerous things. Not everything is Matrix or Transformers. The Mad Max Directors also undercranked like crazy. Those cars are actualy going about 30% slower than they apear.

  • That guy on the bike did a twice in da air!

  • Best movie ever. All complaints please refer to Lord Humongus.

  • Chuck Noris don't need no cardboard boxes..

  • Broken Hill kinda looks like my home town.

  • i wish i was a stuntman for the classic movies

  • I think this is the thing Robert Rodriguez talks about on the OUATIM commentary...

  • The Aussies made a great movie. Hollywood ought to take a lesson. This is how an action movie is supposed to be made - can the CGI crap!

  • All assue stuntmens is demolished in that trilogy lool Best movie ever, best stunts ever!

  • Vernon Wells at 0:38

  • "Supposed to land safely in the most reliable and advanced cushion yet devised: a huge mound of empty cardboard boxes."

    Hardcore.

  • We draw nearer to the time of Mad Max with the passing of each day.

  • Wow this is great! Thanks so much I have looked for the making everywhere!!!

  • THANK YOU for uploading this footage! One of the all-time best action movies, in my opinion. They just don't make 'em like this anymore. Looks like the stuntmen paid the price to capture such raw, intense footage. R.I.P. Byron Kennedy.

  • Holy shit man thanks alot! Great video!!! I just ordered all the Mad Max movies and The Road Warrior sound track and the poster of Mel walking the the raod with the dog and sawed off in his hand. Not looking fowerd to 4 how ever, no Mel. No Mel = no Max. But thanks again man.

  • great

  • amazing DOC!! my fave film. thanks!!

  • great movie

  • Is this the video mentioned in the directors commentary of El Mariachi?

  • damn i was wondering if it was a stunt man in the bike crash when i saw the movie. it was one of the best parts of that chase. can't beleive he actually did it.

  • i like to see more of the making of mad max 2

  • cant believe the guy on the bike actually did that thats fucking crazy i no it didnt go quite to plan but fuck me that was incredidle he didnt kill himself

  • Not only that but it's in the film.

  • that tiny gyrocopter thing at 4:16 looks crazy

  • I've spent time riding bikes on and off road, as well as spending time many years ago in TransAm racing, I can tell you that these stunts borders on insanity. These stunt men really do take their lives in their own hands to make the movies exciting.

  • he was supposed to land safely in the most reliable and advanced cushion yet divised a huge mound of empty cardboard boxes LMAO

  • you should be a rocket scientist mister after the fact. stick to your rice burner... bragging about it even.

  • That stunt shit is CRAZY!

  • I love that gravel-voiced, B-grade "In a World Gone Mad" voice-over in the old stunt docos.

  • When is Mad Max 4 coming out??? Mel Gibson could still do the part.

  • I heard that it would be coming out in 2012, but george miller is still unsure of how he will go about the project. Unfortunately, Mel gibson has repetedly stated that he would not play the role of Max :(

  • hmm, i wonder if itll be any good. i hope it wont be tonned any...thatll suck

  • i allways wondered how they made that bikestunt look so realistic.

he realy did have an accident. rofl.

  • This just makes me love and respect this great film, even more! They wouldn't have the balls to pull off great in-camera stunts, like these guys did back then, today.

  • Wow these are real stunts, not some stupid computer crap. I have to give alot of respect to the stunt man.

  • damn much respect to those crazy fucking stuntmen.

  • interesting clip, one of my fave films ever 5stars

  • when was this movie made again?

  • 1980 or 81 i think

  • Anyone know the music at the start and ending of this video? I'd love to get a copy of it.

  • these guys are freakin nuts lol

  • Thus proving my theory that STUNTMEN HAVE BALLS.

  • najaci likovi

  • u pravu si !!

  • "explains what went wrong" lol

  • I remember seeing this behind the scenes film on HBO, but always wondered why it wasn't included on the DVD.

  • HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!

That bike stunt was for REAL?!

I thought they used a plastic dummy for that scene! Holy shit can't believe a guy had the balls to do this stunt!

  • Afterward I'll bet Norris was thinking 'you BETTER use that goddamn footage George!' lol

  • Great doco and thanks for putting it on youtube, Would be bloody good if someone could talk Mel into doing a Mad Max 4, just wondering if it needs a really good script for him to consider, i think even now Mad max 4 would be a hit at the box office, maybe he finds his way to a ruined sydney to protect the ones that went back to the city what was left of it? well maybe and i'm not a film writer ;)

  • yeah, it would be interesting seeing Max as a middle-aged guy, but according to the info by Wikipedia, Mel Gibson says he won't do another film as he's feels he's too old for the role anymore. An animated Mad Max 4 is what they are planning and he will voice act for the part.

  • They aren't planning an animated Mad max 4, Miller is already building cars for the next one

  • @burlearth NO THEYRE ARENT GONNA BE ANY MAD MAX FILMS

  • Yes there will be

  • @earlpie

Ahhh, yes they are, will hit screens 2012.

  • "Broken Hill, Australia's last frontier town."

Now THAT'S where Broken Hills in Fallout 2 came from.

  • ahhhhhh

    don't make stuntmen

    like they use to...

    woof...

  • Yeah I remember that stunt by Buddy Joe Hooker in First Blood when he dives off that rock face, insane! And who could forget Dar Robinson (RIP)

  • They shouldn't even try to pick a new Max. Mel is Max...period!

  • I always thought Hugh Jackman would play a great Max. He's Australian as well I think.

  • jesus H christ - now wonder they don't make em like this any more.... Nutcases VS CGI Blandism ----- fuck helath and safety

  • Better send the meat truck

  • Is this what used to be presented on the special edition VHS tape?

  • Yes it is. How the hell that this got left off of the DVD is a mystery. Thanks for posting this man!

  • LMAO stack of cardboard boxes

  • Would be awesome if they made another Mad Max!

  • Would Clive Owen would be a good choice for Max?

    Ralph Fiennes as the villain?

  • Mel Gibson is still alive, isn't he?

  • Gibson has found God.

Even though he directed hard arse movies like The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto, he is no longer a hard cunt.

Max has to be an irredeemable godless friendless bastard.

    Gibson isn't anymore.

    Sorry.:-(

  • Yeah, you're right.. :(

  • Nah, Gibson is an actor, he will act no matter what the character calls for.

  • Yes he is. Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson was born on January 3 1956 in Peekskill, New York, USA. He moved to Australia when he was 12 years old and now resides in Los Angeles in the United States. He is still an active actor and his next starrring role will be Edge of Darkness in 2009.

  • When I saw the stunt at 2:28 in the movie, I wondered, how they made such an amazingly real looking dummy. Now I know, it was actually a real guy. Lol.

  • Wonder how many people got hurt in the making of this? The stunts in this movie are nothing short of insane.

  • THAT's how they did it before CGI :D!

  • one guy got killed doing the final chase scene.

  • listen to the guy :44 to 1:00

as he interviews Byron Kennedy he's like mmhmm...

    mmmMMMMmmm... mmmmmmmm.....

  • Ha! I watched Mad max 3 when I was 10 or younger. They showed it at school :)

Everyone watched Rambo and other action films as a kid where I lived.

  • What was the car that crashed into the pile of wrecked cars? Was that a Plymouth Duster?

  • One of my fave films ever its pure class.

i thought it was cheap to make though.

  • It was a modified Valiant Regal

  • It also looks like it has a GTO style front end.

  • my favorite movie!! lol @ cardboard boxes, although the stunt didn't go as planned still looked spectacular and one of the best i've ever seen.

  • Yes I'm a fag and I loved the first mad max movie.

  • thats real film making.. aussies kick arse. keep in mind what year this is, its the early days of aussie filmmaking. until blair witch project mad max is the highest grossing/budget film ever made. unfortunately the US influence on MM3 stufffed it

  • lol, most expenseive australia production ever! thats why they have 'mad max production office' written in biro on some a4 taped to the door. thats the best australia can afford.

  • Anyone know the name of the background music? It sounds great and I would like to get it into the media library on my computer.

  • Loved it...back in college we did a mad max film with all the stunts and came away without a scratch...see out work at FRIBBEN on the tube

  • nobody caresfribben shut the fuck up!!! stop promoting ur useless shit on here!

  • those are some MAD stunts!!

  • Mad Max 2 is the best one

  • LeoBullterrier, You are an insult in your own country.. If there ever was a war then you would be shot by your own troops

  • what did u enjoy mad max #1?? what are you gay?? those 2 were the best you fag!!

  • If ever there was a boxset of films screaming out for a killer special edition with remastering and extras it would be the Mad Max Trilogy. Pre-Cgi genius. Stuntmen back then had balls the size of melons.

  • Balls the size of fucking WATERmelons! I mean, did you see how that guy spun in the air? They simply don't make movies like this anymore!

  • haha I stand corrected and agree, HUUUGE FUCKING WATERMELON BALLS! He flew miles and I am so glad they used the footage for the film, it's epic. This is old school low-tech stunts and they will always have my respect and admiration...plus the Mad Max films are just uber.

  • he was like a fuckin windmill!! and he screamed the whole way..sweet!

  • yup!

  • EXCELLENT ..Too bad there wasn't any bloopers to this..

  • Lord Humungus bloopers would be priceless.

  • hahah for real!

  • wow, never seen any behind the scenes stuff on any mad max movies, loved it!

  • My favourite movie of all time.

  • Mel Gibbson is great in all movies!!!

That was good to see...thanks YOcke!

  • Gibson was great in these movies. Gallipoli was his best Aussie movie before he became all American and sold out.

  • Love it!

  • ha ha ha time to get a new stunt co-ordinator LOL

  • how come this wasn't on the dvd?

  • it is..

  • This was on a vhs of MM2(RW in the states) 2001 but not on the dvd.

  • This movie= One of the few things that makes me proud to be Aussie.

  • the best post-apocalyptica movie ever made

  • your so right !! best music cahse scene too and best female hot hero!! uhhh i hated when she died!!! arhghghg!!!!! i love her!!

Dude and the dog too..worst than i am legend dog...dieing..uhhh

  • both of those things did suck bad... But it was still a fantastic movie.

  • yeah i loved them both too. but i think without those scenes the movie wouldn`t be so tragedy as it already is.

  • it got a 100 % score on rotten tomatoes. a good place to check movie ratings.. and it is just so asome.. (the cars the women the guys and gun/arrows. haha) wow

i reccommend everyone watch this before they turn 30...after 30 things dont seem as cool..i think.

  • i'm 37 and think its still cool as. first saw it when i was 11 at a friends birthday.

  • really? they let u watch a R rated movie? cool!

i bet u where all gasping at alot of things!! haha

    nice mememory

  • Cardboard boxes absorb more energy and a person's body doesn't bounce around like if they landed on spring or foam mattresses.

  • A good movie is worth at least the lives of five human beings (FACT)

  • it's not like the stunt-men had a gun to their head... that's their craft - to take risks

  • Save money making their movie? How else would they have made these crashes look realistic?

Back then there was no CGI.

  • one of the greatest carmovies of all time, they don't do stuff like that anymore

  • they certainly don't... now it's all fake CGI that 9 times out of 10 looks silly

  • The best you ask well now lets seeI'd have to give Smiley a 10/10.

  • wholelotofshakinggoingon what's the best Pricilla queen of the desert

  • ^ Worst comment ever made.

  • christ! how many stunt men in all were injured making this film? those aussie stunt men have balls of steal. great film there's been nothing like it since which says something...

  • They are definitely willing to suffer for their art.

  • cardboard boxes!!! HOLY now thats REAL stuntwork you dont see that any more its all digital bullshit

  • i totally agree...

  • Crazy bastards the impact alone could have broken his neck!

  • Where is the rumored longer version of this video?

  • Wow I always thought that spinning body was a dummy!! I'm surprised he wasn't more hurt!

  • Guy Norris - you stunt legend!!

  • This is how movies SHOULD be made.

No CG, no billion dollar budgets... just monster cars and stuntmen putting their bodies on the line.

    Love this movie.

  • Where did you get this clip from?

Warner Brothers need to get their arses in gear and re-release the whole trilogy re-mastered with all the extras they can find. Its a fucking crime these classics are not on the discs they deserve.

George Miller is a dude. So are you YOcke for posting this up.

  • It was on the japanese dvd. Can't remember where I downloaded it.

  • It's amazing that they would try a stunt without really knowing the outcome. Never happen today what all all the lawyers and liability.

  • I was just listening to the Once upon a time in Mexico commentary and Robert Rodriguez mentions this featurette and laughs about it.. awesome to see it here.. rofl

  • Fascinating on every level, from the real-life body count during filming to the cars we didn't get a real close look at in the final cut. Is that a post-apocalyptic Holden Torana at the 1:20 mark?

  • Yes, it's an LC/LJ Torry.

  • thanks for uploadeding this. I never saw any behind the scene MM footage. I guess that that will be on the bluray 2 set disc ...

  • I heard they did this and always wanted to see it. Nice work on putting this up! Shame its not longer though. Without doubt the best car chase film ever. I love the trilogy to death. Apparently Mad Max 4 is gonna be filmed and released in the next few years.

Jesus, proper stuntmen and action...respect is due.

  • Gotta love the old school approach.

  • Holy shit, hahahahah, "the most reliable and advance cushion yet devised, a huge mound of empty cardboard boxes." That's so awesome.

  • yeah I had a little laugh at that too ^.^

  • lol indeed. professional mad men. I think that's the shot they used though.

  • Yupp! Truly ace commentary. I had quite a laugh there.

  • Even in 1981, I question whether or not thhat was "the most reliable and advance cushion yet devised."

  • Yeah, that was funny. I almost wondered if it was supposd to be a joke.

  • Oh shit, awesome, thanks for uploadeding this. Cool to see the making of what forever will be, without a doubt, for a fact, the greatest car chase scene ever.
