The fact of the matter is, the government had over 20 years to repair the levees. The state of Louisiana chose not to do it and given the fact that the govern knew the levees were not secure and that a category 5 storm was coming, she should had galvanized an immediate and mandatory evacuation after meeting with the meteorologist who vehemently warn of the coming storm and the devastations it would reap. Contrary to popular belief, Katrina did not kill those people, the US government did!

Some person may say that well the people should have left and the would not have died. You have to realized that the whole city of New Orleans did not have the resources to pack up all their belongs and just leave. Now this is where the government should have come in. I don't believe people should set back and wait on welfare, but there are cases like this, where the government needs to step up to the plate. There should have been a mandatory evacuation given it was to be a category 5 storm.

I actually watched the HBO special Spike Lee did on this, which was nothing more than a compilation of live footage on the incident and I was appalled. NO ONE CAN TELL ME that this was not blatant racism and eugenics at its best! I will never ever be sold on the idea that America will divorce its racist roots. Ok, the reason why it took so long to get supplies to these people was because Gov Blanco would not sign to recieve federal aid. Pres Bush pressured her to sign for several days but she wouldnt. I am from Louisiana and I know what happend, but these people chose to stay and and had the oppurtunity to leave but they chose not to. And New Orleans wasnt the only place to get hit by a hurricane.

Blanco didn't do a great job but the whole disaster didn't fall on her not signing a piece of paper. Blanco did accept national guard troops from New Mexico on the 28th but the paperwork to authorize troop movement over state lines didn't even come from Washington until the 2nd (5 days after the storm hit). Then Naggin ordered troops to abandon search and rescue to stop looting even though he had reports saying that thousands were still stranded. Also...
