  • Superb!

  • Curti o figurino, mas não tenho paciência pra ver um show desse estilo.

  • O my god!! What a great beautiful amaizing dance!

  • the facial expression... subtle...

  • verry long hair

  • what is the name of the playwriter?

  • he's the best EVER <3

  • where is the dance?

  • Subtilité...eblouisement...voyage et sagesse tout un programe dans le plus pur rituel de cet garçon à la delicatesse dans le mouvement si armonieux et majestueux qui laisse des sensations inesplicables en soi .....régal des yeux ....

  • this is the exotic magic of the orient amazing

we eastern people rock !!! :)

  • i notice that the actors white face makeup is exactly the same as that that was once worn by european nobility in western europe in the 17th century...........but the old european white makeup was lead based. many rich types died! mostly noble women and courtiers.

  • @acerb45666555 this one used to be mercury and or zinc based.

  • does her facial expression have something to do with the dance?

  • what instrument is that high-pitched one?

  • @RaynorFirebat It is a japanese flute called "shakuhachi"

  • @RaynorFirebat flute like instrument

  • @RaynorFirebat Its the Flute thats the high-pitched one.

  • ☜(:♛ฺ;益;♛ฺ;)☞

  • Tiffenakou, could you please share where you bought this narrated set?

I would love to support this lovely art and keep it in my treasured collection of Japanese cinema and films.I appreciate it very much. :)

  • @FadedSilkandGhosts amazon.co.jp or yesasia carries this set.

  • @tiffenakou

Ah. I should have known. Many thanks. :)

  • @tiffenakou I´ve been looking for it in amazon.jp and yesasia, but I just can´t find it. Could you please provide us a web link to the product?

  • Simply stunning.

  • in my moviment class i need to do some test, i wish to use the kabuki movements, they are my inspiration for theatre

  • So from the translations he's explaining, how much of what he's saying is part of the song?

  • Does their hair really grow to that length?

  • @isabellemarie89 u mean actor's? it's a wig ^^ but in ancient times, yeah, women usually had hair longer than themselves. looooong hair was considered beautiful.

  • @isabellemarie89

Yes. Specifically the noble court women in Heian era Japan(Think The Tale of Genji, if you're familiar with it). It was a sign of great beauty and grace. It was the highest physical virtue a woman could cultivate at the time, along with their ways of powdering their face white and dying their teeth black(curious i know, but they were dyed because white faces made teeth look yellow and unappealing). They also shaved off their eyebrows, then painted smudgy ones high on forehead.

  • not trying to sound ignorant, although this will, but the flute at the beginning sounds like the flute in a LOT of Naruto music...which makes sense since much of naruto is inspired by folklore and the first series used more traditional instruments in many of it's musical themes.

on a less nerdy note (maybe): That doesn't look anything like Kushi or Nami from Okami! jk. and the narrator dude makes me feel like we're watching a kabuki nature show. lolkinda...

  • Me molesta el hombre que habla!!!

  • Mas é só homens interpretam qualquer papel nesse teatro!!! Até a mulher é interpretada por um homem! Estilo de teatro mais velho...

  • Thank you very much!

  • I plan to purchase the Tamasaburo DVD set that you mentioned elsewhere (thank you!). Do you know which disk this dance is on? I just watched the Takarazuka "Susano-O" performance; this is a wonderful counterpart.

  • @rocketshadow it is in disc 3 of the set.

  • BEAUTIFUL kabuki is awesome

  • i find Tamasaburo-sama very beautiful in this play. a very lovely japanese man! i want to marry him! hehe

  • orochimaru means snake demon i think

  • I for one dont' mind the voice over. As much as I enjoy being immersed in the music and dance, it's nice to know what's going on and the narrator speaks at appropriate times. All in all this seems like a wonderful piece. It would be great to see something like this live.

  • what does ororchimaru mean ??

  • Well Orochi is "great serpent" and Maru can mean a few things like circle, perfection, pure...

  • The voice over ruins the performance it should have been done as subtitles instead

  • I don't mind the voice over. Yes its maybe a little unnecessary on a short snippet like this first video, but I think I'd struggle to watch a whole Kabuki play without somekind of info telling me what's going on. Even more so with Noh or Bunraku, recitals of which have been known to go on for up to twelve hours at a time!!!

  • This is a beautiful work of Art from start to finish. The commentary is intrusive, i could happily watch this and let the artists speak for themselves.

  • Beautiful.........could do without the voice over and just enjoy the performance....wish I was there in person to see it!!!!

  • Why are the Japanese so awesome? Does the the Japanese government have a general post office box we can send fan mail to?

They invented Samurai AND sushi. Same country! No foolin'!

  • we are going to perform kabuki in our drama class.. so excited!

  • Voice of American spoils the charm of Japanese theater and does not enjoy the video.

Theater is really great, and nothing can compare with this gem of art.

  • what i find truly amazing about this style of theater is that contrary to the richness of the costumes the setting and the actual playing is reduced to minimum. The scenes and the action is either described by the narrators or hermetically suggested by the movement of the actor. So we can conclude (without pretending of being a connoisseur) that most of the Kabuki is an psychological play happening not so much on the stage but in the viewer mind. This makes Kabuki unique!

  • I can't thank you enough for sharing these beautiful works of art.

  • brutally beautiful............

  • this is soooo beautiful

i dont get tired to watch it

    and i love the music

    domo arigato

    x

  • reminds me of Izumo and the Serpent from GS:TLA xD Well of course this is where that came from...

  • love it.

  • THIS IS JAPANESE NO CHINA.......

  • thanks for posting this. i was wondering if is there any version of the video without the voice? it spoils a bit the music and distract the dancing .blessings to all

  • yes, if you get the DVD version, you can turn off the narration or choose to have either Japanese or English narration.

  • where can i get one!! O-O i need it in my life lol

  • amazon?

  • This is beautiful and very good the actor. congratulations.

  • this is beautiful, tamasaburo is great!

  • that must be where Orochimaru's(character in Naruto) name comes from... 0_0

  • Actually Orochimaru, Jiraiya and Tsunade were named after characters from Jiraiya Goketsu Monogatari. An old Japanese folktale.

  • Woo!

  • Yes The legend of the Gallant Jiraiya ;)!!!!

  • Yes the legend of the Gallant Jiraiya ;)!!!

  • old perv! haha

  • @GothicShadow yes, the tale itself is fascinating....

a shame that there is no kabuki play about it, at least, that I have found online..

I have yet to have the priviledge to see a play live..

  • @GothicShadow

With that make-up and hair , he does look a bit like Orochimaru from Naruto ...

  • well, orochi just means "big snake."

  • are there candles on his head?

  • no, it's a jewlery

  • The video game for PS2 called Okami is based on this legend, about the 8 headed serpent, Orochi.

  • thank you

  • Nice to see some traditional kabuki.

  • tamasaburo ist the best!

  • Does anyone know where i can find a version of this without someone talking all the way through... I love the performance, but find the narration really anoying :(

  • where can I buy the dvd?

  • i'd vote for the nothing

  • He doesn't looks much like a woman. The whole play is so beautiful and awesome.

  • Beautiful video. Not because of any skillful cinematography but because of the inherent beauty of Kabuki itself. Mr. oh-so-soft-spoken englishman's non-stop drivel in the name of interpretive commentary however manages to kill the audio This nincumpoops non-stop prattle completely masks the beautiful music. Instead I wish there were subtitles - much more non-interfering..

  • the original dvd comes with 4 options: Japanese subtitle, Japanese narration, English narration, or nothing.

  • Thank you soooo much......I am so dismayed that the videos are being taken off utube. I have gained such an education from them and have lead others to see too. Please reconsider. To me the voice IS informative. To each his own. Yet Again. in honer... Thank You for sharing truth in value... worth.... human soul....expression......culture!

  • Comment removed

  • this is the translation. if you go to a kabuki play and pay for the translation headphones this is exactly what you will hear. it's a bit annoying at first but then you appreciate it because it gives background info and doesn't distract you from watching and listening to the dance.

  • I like his hair and kimono.

    LOL

He looks like a japanese doll!

  • tamasaburo is the actor of this kabuki

  • who is tamasaburo

  • thanks tiffenakou for sharing this amazing cultural tradition.

  • This is great! Thank you for posting!

  • that wig is just so beautiful, and kimono is wonderful!

  • thank you very much for taking the time to share with us this wonderful piece of japanese culture

  • Such a swift movement...

  • i love his hair pin - the shiny thing grabbing his ponytail, seems like the one that shiranui mai has. Does someone know the name of this hair pin, what it is made and where i can buy something like??

  • I think it's a thick paper or metal strip that cross in the back. It's typical of katsura (Japanese wigs).

  • thank you so much for uploading these videos!

  • well it is kind of like Geisha started out as men...lol

  • Are there any modern Kabuki plays where women get to play women? If so, could somebody please name a fer and/or tell me where I could find them?

  • well traditionally women have been baned from Kabuki i doubt that you will see a woman playing at the Kabuki za theater, but in some villages with local kabuki plays they have been known to allow women in the play.

  • the costume is beautiful, where can I find out more about Kabuki theater? It is such a beautiful art form

  • somw of this story reminds me of okami for some reason

  • Okami is partly based around the legend of Orochi...maybe that's why?

  • The movement is painfully slow but I must say that she has this certain quality of fluidity. The costume is so beautiful as the movement complimets the narrations... I like =D

  • LOL um thats a man, not a woman, Bando Tamasaburo, a great kabuki player...

  • You have paid him a great compliment. He is considered the very best at female roles in Kabuki.

  • 大変だけどとってもすきね!

  • This dance is so beautiful. I wish I could meet him. And I want to wear a kimono like this for my lover.

  • wonderful!
