  • "Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Not as good as the book, but still worth watching."

I totaly disagree with that, I think this serie is far more interesting than the books of Conan Doyle

  • Would it have killed you to have come up with at least one original description to all these episodes?

It's not only repetitive, but false, as the vast majority of the stories originated as features in The Strand magazine.

  • Oh my god - I didn't know Edward Hardwicke had died!

  • yes, been looking for this everywhere, thank-you.

  • You know what Professor Moriarty's last words were? "AAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"!

  • @tubian323 LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Where is that Sherlock Holmes episode in which he cracks the case involving this villain who is blackmailing aristocratic women in exchange for keeping certain embarassments secret?

  • @1101millie97 Do you want the name or a link? I think the episode was called "The Master Blackmailer", based on "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton".

  • @lexifly

Thanks, but I think I found it, though it was apparently truncated in transmission with some scenes chopped out for some reason.

  • The original James Bond...only smarter and more of a renaissance man.

  • Both Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke, what a pair. Rest in Peace Gentlemen, the world is less beautiful without you two in it!

  • I love both Burke and Hardwicke as Watson, but I find Hardwicke's narrative more natural than Burke's...

  • Thanks for uploading this, I couldn't find these in the video store or anywhere I looked, so I'm grateful that I can appreciate them. :)

  • I really miss David Burke but Edward Hardwicke does wonderfully!

  • @aDieuSeul Why David Burke did not play Watson in this movie

  • great film

  • R.I.P. - Edward Hardwicke - 7 August, 1932 – 16 May, 2011. Marvelous Actor; he will be missed by all who loved this series.

  • I was a little upset at Burke not coming back, but Hardwicke does do an excellent job and steps into the mantle of Watson very well.

  • Aha, an explanation about Watson's change from Burke To Hardwicke! The stress of the hiatus made Watson age incredibly rapidly :p

  • @ludicrouslouisa And shrink a bit, apparently. :P

  • EEEEeeee, Lestrade is so cute, I just wanna pinch his little cheeks. Can anybody with a better ear than I have tell me where his accent is from?

  • @TheWonderfulWombat : His actor, Colin Jeavons, is originally from Wales.

  • yes to bad they dontmake series likethis anymore ,,but the brits have some good murder mysterys,,

  • what was the episode before this

  • It's still a little weird seeing Hardwicke instead of Burke, but I think I'm getting used to it.

  • @HarryplusHermione You get used to it....I think Hardwicke is like five times better then Burke as Watson. I think Burkes Watson is more dumber and more silly then Hardwicks role...Just like Nigel Bruce potrait....I never liked Bruce...He potraited Watson like some kind of loony or fool..In the books Watson is a clever and intelligent person...Not some idiot...Hardwicke and Brett is the best Holmels an Watson ever....No offend to you:). You don´t have to agree. It´s my own oppinion....

  • It will be weird watching this with Hardwicke instead of Burke, but I'm going to watch it anyway since Hardwicke seems awesome too!

  • Dunno why but I prefer Edward Hardwicke to David Burke in the role of Dr Watson ;) both r cool but I'm more comfortable with Hardwicke

  • I prefer Hardwicke – I thought I was the only one. I thought Burke was wooden at times, but I seem to be in the minority.

  • prefer Hardwicke to Burke(although he was good too)

  • My favorite all time episode. I love Edward Hardwicke as John Watson. Burke, was good, and did a lot for revamping the Watson character at the time, (most people thought of Nigel Bruce's portrayal) but in re-watching the DVDs, which I have done many times, I keep thinking about how Burke's Dr. fawns over Holmes, and gives out that somewhat cheesy smile. He still played it sorta wimpy and dumb in some ways. Hardwicke was perfect, and they picked a great time to make the change.

  • @ghostfanX2 I'm a Burke man myself although Hardwicke was good in the role.

Burke had for me a certain zest and humor while Hardwicke gave Watson a certain gravitas.

They were both memorable in their own ways IMHO and were certainly an improvement over Nigel Bruce.

  • @ghostfanX2 Nigel Bruce and Basil Rathbone in 'The Hound Of The Baskervilles'

    "Have I missed anything?"

    "Almost everything my dear fellow"

Bruce's portrayal of Watson as a fat doofus always grated on me.

  • @cha5

I agree Bruse could be something of a doofus - honestly, I think it is more he was instructed to play it that way. And the movies, because of the war, also wanted "comic relief" and Bruce was a great way to get that. The Baskervilles line WAS a change. In the book/Brett version it is closer, but still in a way, a put down-"Watson, you may not, yourself be luminous, but you are a great CONDUCTOR of light." Wish Rathbone and Bruce could have done a better version. Lots of changes!

  • @ghostfanX2 True, there were several points in the stories where Holmes mentioned that Watson stimulated him intellectually. I always thought that bit in THOTB was that at this point in the partnership Holmes was tutoring Watson in some of the basics of deduction. And I even remember in some of the later stories where Watson is able to make deductions on his own by observing people.

  • I was a young teen when this first aired on PBS. I wondered "Who's *that* guy? (referring to Hardwicke) Where's Watson?" Didn't like him at all.

But over the next few episodes, I grew to love him as much as Burke. Now I joke that the good doctor regenerated (little Doctor Who humor there, haha!)

  • @Calvero52 Lol. I actually thought of how it's a little like getting used to a new Doctor in DW when I read this. xD

  • Can anyone upload the red headed league? It's the only one I can't find on here! I know it's a bit ocd but it's driving me nuts knowing I've missed one! LOL

  • @ThePipsummers It's not on YouTube, but I, someone who hates to miss an episode, searched like crazy and finally found it on megavideo. You could try there.

  • That violin gets on my nerves

  • anish, greatful for ur uploads dude

    regrds frm pakistan

  • There will be no Holmes shows or movies to equal the books so brilliantly written, but Jeremy Brett had a flare for the character that was irresistible and ingenious in itself. Brett was a mastermind for the part.

  • I hate the new Watson, why did the first one go?

  • @BWEE1000 The other dude wanted to spend more time with his wife and his kid so he dithced this tv series...I agree with you cause this guy sucks.....it hurts my eyes to even look at him

  • @MrSherlockWatson Yer, if there had to replace the original Watson, why couldn't there find a bitter actor and a actor that is the same age as the first one?

  • @BWEE1000 To spend more time with his family. He actually recommended his replacement.

  • @twosixteen Why did he have to do that? Maybe he was drunk when he recommended this guy? Why did there take notice of him? Couldn't there just find a bitter actor?

  • The theme song for this makes me feel... I don't know, it's so beautiful it kind of makes me dizzy. I absolutely love the theme song, and this episode is so emotional. It's so awesome that Sherlock Holmes was alive!!!

  • This is one of the few shows where I actually enjoy listening to the theme song.

  • I'm definitely buying the box set of this series. 100 U.S. dollars is a paltry sum for entertainment of this caliber. All parties involved in this series deserve the recognition.

  • Oh yes...imagine being alone without your friend

  • I will miss Burke, him and Brett made an amazing and very memorable team. Although, I do think that Edward makes for a fine Watson.

  • I will miss Burke, him and Brett made an amazing and very memorable team.

  • @Mimi2591 I agree, the loss of Burke was hard to get used to for me personally. The chemistry between him and Brett was capital, what they did together on screen as these two legendary characters was magic. Don't get me wrong I think Hardwicke did a wonderful job as Watson but I must say I miss Burke terribly.

  • I remember watching this for the first time on ITV3 right after 'The Final Problem' . I remember thinking "They can't have Sherlock Holmes [the series] without Sherlock Holmes [the character]!" (this was made up of shock more than logic). The delight when I realised Holmes was still there will forever be etched in my memory.

  • black and white combo is often used by satanists...it could be because it has something to do with manipulations...

  • i like this part... iwas laughing when i saw watson hit moran with the butt of his revolver...

  • I-I kind of love you. ;A; Thank you so much for putting these on heree

  • The two "dislikes" are from Professor Moriarty and Colonel Moran!

  • @Kev95682 Ha ha I LOVE it! I agree with that!

  • @Kev95682 lol, that was funny

  • Both Burke and Jeremy Brett were my favourite. My family watch the Granada TV series over and over ...........

  • Thank you so much for uploading these.

  • I loved it! Great episode and even touching to see Watson's and Mrs. Hudson's reaction to seeing Sherlock Holmes again :)

  • I so love this Lastrade!!! He's just brilliant.

and even though I like David Burke better Edward Hardwicke is also really great.

and with Jeremy Brett it's just the best Holmes series ever!!!

  • I like this Watson better than the first one, but I still say Jude Law is the best of all the Watsons I've ever seen.

  • @charlotte221b I completely agree. The new '09 movie portrays Watson closer to the original character created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, compared to past t.v. series and movies. I have nothing against Burke, but the impression of Watson as a short, fat, bumbling idiot is nothing but completely erroneous. Jude Law's (or rather, Guy Ritchie's) Watson is the best yet.

  • Comment removed

  • @hzy126 For me Burke brought out Watson's humanity and friendship with Holmes in a way that no other actor has come close to, not Edward Hardwick or really anyone else, and for me Burke's Watson was never short, fat, and bumbling, we're not talking Nigel Bruce here.

  • @cha5 ,

Burke was my favorite, too. I always wonder if he had any idea that it would become a hit series and run for 10 years - or any regrets.

  • @BicPentameter I remember some Sherlock Holmes retrospective some years after the ending of the Granada series that had Burke as Watson offering his recollections of Holmes at a dinner table with guests,

I always wish Burke could have stayed throughout the entire series,

no disrespect to Edward Hardwicke but IMO he just couldn't capture the earlier Brett and Burke magic.

  • ohhhhhhh! 2:39 - 2:52 That is a terrible bearing rein!! That poor horse! look at it's neck all tightened up; it can't pull the carriage like God made it to! Poor Thing.

Why the uproar? Well, if what i heard from Black Beauty holds true, then this poor horse is suffering terrible back pain. And don't take that like a joke.

I'm no animal worshiper, but I am conscious of our duty to care for God's creation!

  • I am so glad I found these episodes again! I haven't seen them in about 10 or 12 years and I am addicted to them all over again. It's like reliving a part of my childhood, reading the books and then watching the eps on Youtube. I am slowly but surely getting the DVDs but until then I can be happy with finding them here. Thank you for bringing back a big part of my teenage years.

  • @AlchemicGnosis I could not have said it better!

  • I'll tell you what else I hate about this new format: I like watching these episodes in the full screen mode. In this new format, when the next section automatically starts the screen shrinks to normal or standard format. The old format smoothly changed from one section to the next, no need to constantly click full screen as I have to do now. I don't mean to cry about it but.....

  • i don't like the new watson! i want the old one back!

  • ahh! yes! finally i found some good sherlock holmes movies! :)

  • I have over the years seen several actors 'playing' Holmes but without 'bite'.

Jeremy Brett made the Holmes role great. I mean GREAT

  • I have never really hated anything in my life. Disliked , yes. Hated, no. I Hate The New YouTube Layout!!! :-(

  • @c4xpert . Yes, it is a terrible layout.

  • @c4xpert Yes I supoosed they follow the new interior design look. Minimalist. It's going take a while for me to get used to.

  • Oh no. So after the 2009 Star Trek movie came out I became obsessed with the 1960 series (better than the new movie!). I do. . . not need. . . to get into another old television series. *sighs* Okay I will. This just goes to show that I was born in the wrong decade. This old TV has so much depth to it. ARGH! :)

  • isnt holmes in this

  • How cut Holmes not mach a hand to hand combat with that darm old shit to Mariaty! T.T HOLMES!!!

  • @Krizushi

Holmes and Moriarty were equals on pretty much every level. Although he looks like a frail old man, it doesn't take much to imagine that he has a large reserve of strength. Besides, Holmes had the upper hand for the most part; had they been anywhere else he would have easily won. But at Reichenbach Falls they had restricted movement, and so it made things much more difficult.

  • My god, what have I been doing, neglecting to watch this?! This is amazing!

Thank you, Anish79, you have just introduced me to one of the most accurate and charming adaptations of Sherlock Holmes, a smiley for you! =)

  • Vasily easily rivals Jeremy...

  • Edward Hardwicke did an excellent job of taking over the role of Watson. In fact it took me a while before I realised the actor wasn't the same one as in the first series. Physical resemblance is only part of it, he managed to play his mannerisms and personality very closely to David Burke's Watson. Interesting that it was Burke himself who recommended Hardwicke to be his replacement.

  • It just occurred to me: two people fall from a cliff; a search party is quickly organised, but no bodies are found. Did nobody bother to even look for them? It's not as though they fell into the ocean, it's a small mountain river.

  • @illbetilbake I think one is stuck, to an extent, with the limitations of the original story. As I understand it, the author was tired of Sherlock Holmes and wrote a story to "kill him off" by having him thrown into the falls, then had to bring him to life again in this tale, due to popular demand for more stories about him. Realism didn't seem to be uppermost in the author's mind at this point. You have to just watch these particular episodes for the pleasure of the performances and so on.

  • Of course. It's as much about the characters themselves as it is about the thrill of mystery. Pointing out logical inconsistencies would be to miss the point of the series. It's just that I have seen this particular episode several times, first as a child and on several occasions later on and I never bothered to think about the reality of the death sequence. Not to mention the fact that an old man like Moriarty was never a match for Holmes in hand-to-hand combat.

  • @zutal0rs realism and fact checking seems to have been of little importance to the author, many of these stories are fantastic if not impossible, the one with the made up species of snake crawling up a rope (which is impossible) and responding to a whistle (which snakes can't hear) comes to mind.

Definitely agree with you that you need to read/watch these just for the joy of it without thinking too much about the facts. I do love them regardless, after all real life is much less entertaining.

  • @MrMrdswoods My thoughts exactly.

  • @5:02 the guy saying 'We can get our revenge' is the actor who played Mordred in Boormans Excalibur movie. Wow seems like a lot of the cast is enjoying some work on the Holmes series.

  • stupid spammers think holmes fans, real fans, are as stupid as the spammersXD

  • wow watson you look older after three years! *sarcastic*

  • Indeed. Brett presents Holmes as a human being. Now whenever I read a Holmes story from the Canon, I heard Brett's voice. And I also agree that Granda's presentation mostly faithful to the stories.

  • Watson should have said something wise assy at 8:21

  • Jeremy Brett was the ultimate Holmes on screen, in my opinion. His death was a great loss.

  • @figgywhipkins Yes, he died while there where filming the last series. RIP Jeremy Brett.

  • The great Watson switch-over. I wonder why they altered the cast? Well, I like both watson's, personally. Burke was abit funnier, and suited the younger, more energetic Brett. But Hardwicke was just more Watson-like, I think. He was believable as a victorian gentleman-very honourable portrayal. It fits JB's later years as well as Burke did his early.

  • Burke couldn't continue as Watson due to other things in his life. Interestingly enough, it was his wife who suggested Hardwicke for the part!

  • Burke left the series to spend more time with his son I understand.

  • Jeremy Brett reminds me of Moliere's end.

Death soon following his last performance.

  • i do miss jb , watching s.h. on dvd takes me back to school dayz.. amazing acting..

  • I like how the brought Lestrade in for this one.

  • Look up Jeremey Brett in wikipedia. It is quite an interesting read.

  • hate wikipedia.

  • Wikipedia has its uses but it's pretty mediocre IMHO when it comes to information on Sherlock Holmes since just about anyone can put almost anything they want to on it, regardless if it's true or not,

    I prefer Sherlockiandotnet.

  • @nightwing01 it has a limited role. not perfect but free. take all advice, especially free, with salt

  • Obviously nothing is like Conan Doyle's book, but of all the would be interpreters of Holmes JB was hands down the most accurate, as was this series BECAUSE they followed the book unlike the american versions which always perverted the stories and characters to fit their own ideas.

  • @LaZafra1 je suiss American. yeah, a lot of our t.v/ film is all propaganda or commercials! i just bought these. much rather own it than deal w spammers!

  • TV did not show Dr. W. had a wife ,much diffurent of novel, Connan D.was supposed finish Homes writting but not his novels funs so it was continued story again. But not my lovely Jeremy . Miss you his acting for Holmes.

  • It's kind of tasteless (to say the least) to say "Not as good as the book, but still worth watching. " considering this series is probably the best of cinematic or television SH adaptations. Besides, it's a useless comparison.

  • I wished Jeremy Brett was able to come back from the dead like Sherlock Holmes seems to do in this episode

  • Granada is under the BBC flag-

J Brett was fighting cancer and became too ill to continue working-

He died not long after he quit the series

    from what I remember-

  • james bree as holmes is like david suchet as poirot...one and unique

  • Who's James Bree??

  • Never mind . . . I just saw from the closing credits that James Bree is the actor who played the coroner. Don't think he ever played Holmes, though, unless his list of roles at IMDB is missing something.

  • that's a nice statement :)

  • While JB might be amazing, I believe he is not as good as the book but worth watching

  • Jeremy Brett is the best Sherlock Holmes ever.

  • A perfect cast. Jeremy Brett is the definitive Sherlock! These dramatizations are so true to the original stories...wonderful wonderful....

  • I loved these stories from the BBC. Thanks for posting. I hope there are more to come!

  • Sorry to be pedantic, but it wasn't the BBC, it was Granada television.

  • I remember reading this story with so much curiosity . I could hardly wait for Holmes's return. Thanks a lot for these videos.

  • What a narrative in the beginning! The thought of dear Watson alone without Holmes is unbearable... this episode is one of the best and most memorable!

  • what does = <3333 mean?

  • maybe he/she means <3333 = love??

  • Thanks Anish for posting this! Jeremy Brett + Sherlock Holmes = <3333

    XD

  • I remember watching these episodes when I was little on the Disney Channel. Brings back memories...

  • Whoa, Holmes on the Disney Channel?

  • I think he means The Great Mouse Detective, the rodent version of Sherlock Holmes parody.

Holmes & Watson(name changed as Basil & Dawson) other extras appear as mice, Moriarty(name changed as Ratigan) appears as a rat who has some mice, a lizard & a bat as thugs!

  • No, I know what The Great Mouse Detective is, and I've watched it and loved it (especially the Holmes and Watson cameo talking about German music~) but they said those episodes on the Disney Channel. Episodes would not mean TGMD, especially not "these episodes". :p

  • Really can't beat the Brits for period pieces, Brett was a truly amazing actor and his portrayal of Holmes really moves me, I grew up watching this on ITV (lol am 30 now) and it's still incredible, miss you so much Jeremy :(

  • Me too!! I love him!!!! To me JB will be the ONLY Holmes.

  • thank you so much for uploading these videos. I grew up reading Sherlock Holmes....but never got the chance of seeing him on screen before.....I am grateful to you

  • JEremy brett is and and always will be the only "sherlok holmes."

    he is amazing.

  • I agree. But don't let my Mom hear you say that. SHe grew up watching the late-night Sherlock Holms movies on TV and for her Basil is the only Sherlock.

  • I agree, JB is Sherlock Holmes. I recently bought a SH game and nearly died when I heard the voice actor. It was so bad I was almost heartbroken. "*cry* Who the hell is this guy and where is Jeremy Brett????" lmao i just pretend it is JB saying everything now... (9.9)

  • oh! at 5:00 a short glimpse at Robert Addie!

    thanks wright9185 for sharing!

  • Was it really okay for Watson to touch the bullet? well, I guess this would have been before "modern" investigation techniques

  • right. DNA testing didn't come into play until the 1980s. ;) lol, had he been in this era, that would have been a big no-no.

  • 8:05......a trained monkey shot him with pistol. i think.

  • you notice how when Watson said "monkey" the inspector below turned to look around....like "who me?"

  • Though I appreciate that almost no movie etc is ever as good as the book. I have just been watching some brain dead horror movie, which makes one realize just how good these Sherlock Holmes production are. Ta for posting. :o)

  • What kind of horse was that? Not to take away from the video itself of course! Good driver knows to keep his horse still.

  • I was wondering why that horse didn't stop?

  • David Burke was so much better as Watson. Anyone know why he left?

  • He wanted to spend more time with his family. I believe he was also the one who suggested Edward Hardwicke to fill his role. I personally prefer Hardwicke but I love both of them...

  • And it works well since it's been some time.....makes Watson look older

  • Apparently he left because he wanted to spend more time with his son (because his son was just a kid and Burke was never home because he was filming the Adventures).

  • Many thanks for posting this for all to enjoy and cherish. What a peerless legacy Mssrs Brett and Hardwicke have given us.

  • This is a load off my mind...Holmes is back and is better than ever. :D

I have always been crazy for a good mystery, and NONE come anywhere close to these. Both in the book, and on TV, nothing can compare to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson.

Would I ever love to meet them (all 3 of them)

  • Me 2!!!! :)

  • im holmes fan!!

  • qUANTO HO aMATO qUESTI fILM

  • At the risk of being contrary, I don't know that it your GCSE may be entirely accurate. Doyle was concerned with being type cast, and had many other stories no one was interested in. He had publishing deals for his other stories, on the basis he would write more Holmes stories. In fact there is more after Sherlock's near death experience than before it!!
