I was fortunate enough to see Arthur perform live many, many times between 1970 and 2004 and every time I listen to his music I am reminded how badly the world misses his talent. When I shook his hand and thanked him for his music after an open-air gig in England, he hugged me and said "Well thank you, sir". A true genius. Everyone who appreciates that fact has a responsibility to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to experience the joy his music brings.
I totally agree with what you say about drummer George; he is one of my favorite all time drummers! And this incarnation of Love was the very best, in my opinion. God, those were the days. I'm so glad I saw this incarnation live in Vancouver on Valentines Day in the early '70s. Arthur Lee was a genius in the true sense of the word!
1970 was a great year in hard rock: Led Zep 3; Black Sabbath's debut and Paranoid; Jimi's Band of Gypsies; Deep Purple's In Rock; Sir Lord Baltimore's Kingdom Come and up to par with any of these and surpassing most, Love's Four Sail!
Frank and Gary dropped off in this performance imo.
George was up there. Christ !
Better than a record studio blowbruh
I love "August" but wish Arthur had cut out the "early-heavy" stuff. - yes George was brill on performance, but neither Arthur, Gary or Frank were up for the 'Four Sale' achievent. Not at that gig, nor the one I saw in London - one I saw.
George Suranovich was right up there with the big name greats of drumers in my book and think he deserved alot more recognition..The greatest words ive ever heard about describing aurthur lee was he was"Johnny Mathis from mars" That just so hits the nail on head in my mind..I miss my aunual trip to NY to see his show he did at the warsaw in brooklyn..i would drive 5 hours and it was worth ever second
Oh my God... This is by far the coolest thing I've ever seen on YouTube... Thank you, Torben!!! It's great to see footage of this quality, just amazing. Fayad and Suranovich are easily one of the greatest rhythm sections ever in rock'n'roll... I wish I'd been able to get a copy of 'Four Sail' back in High School ('85-'89), 'cause all the other musicians I went to school with just worshiped Rush; it would have been so cool to be able to say "nevermind those guys, check this out! "

drummer george suronovich is playing the rogers "timbale twin" drum set here.
he had strong drum and bugle corps chops, tuned high and tight for easy double strokes.
his best work was on "love is more than words" from "out here" with this lineup , he and bassist frank fayad created a fast tempo psychadelic boogaloo that went on for 20 minutes and had the heaviest recorded bass i ever heard.
i agree that four sail is massively underrated !!!! i think it stands next to forever changes !!! but hell i love all their stuff !!!! bryan mcleans solo albums are beautiful too !!!!
Wowee Zowee!! What great, intimate footage. I know it's not the original Love line-up but it's great to see Arthur from this time. Four Sail is totally underrated and overlooked. There's not a bad song on it. If it was the only thing Love had ever recorded it would be recognised as a classic of it's time, but is over shadowed by Forever Changes. I love everything Arthur and Love did. True originals...Ta
Yup, I was one of about six people in Toronto who bought Four Sail and was deeply impressed, especially w/August. Lovely to have video of them at this time!
Four Sail is indeed an underrated album and this video is the best footage I have seen of love in their heyday...great quality...fantastic performance...even with this entirely new backing band Arthur Lee's genius as a singer/songwriter shines through.
I also had a copy of the 45 'Your Mind & We Belong Together' b/w 'Laughing Stock'...No photo sleve, but a glossy Elektra jacket...I sold it about 25 years later for $40.
There were about two people in the city of Philadelphia who bought 'Four Sail'...I was one of them...The population was 2 million in 1970...I also had the first copy of 'Out Here' in the city...The other three people bought theirs after I did.
Who's playing guitar?...Is that Jay Donnelan?...Doesn't look like it...No, Gary Rowles...Whoever it is, it looks like he's playing a Fender Jazzmaster or maybe a Strat....Not getting loud enough amplification; no distortion...The drummer is a madman...
Just ridiculously good, and so underappreciated! I'm not sure of the name of their drummer, but he is pretty talented. I don't think I've heard anyone man the snare that fast! Has a great style that really adds a lot to the music.
Does anyone have the full video for this? It actually included Arthur play Doggone solo before they just into August. It is a fantastic version of that song. Arthur's voice is raw that it makes you really feel the song in a way that is different than the album version. It use to be on Youtube about 3 years ago.
Four Sail is supposed to be the better record (compared to Out Here) taken from the same period, but Elektra wanted the better songs to fulfill it's last album of the early contract before he started his new company. Listening to those two once, I actually preferred Out Here more. I thought it was a little hearken back to the mood of Forever Changes, without totally reverting. Maybe I'll have to listen a few times (gladly), but that's my initial impression.
@tjb9693 I know what you mean. I sometimes like Out Here in some ways better than Four Sail in alot of ways. It is a great double record that has a certain sound to it that has no commercial value to it. But, that is what actually makes it great. When I lived in Vegas I use to listen to Out Here almost everyday for about two years.
What an incredible song. George Suranovich was an incredible drummer. This song ranks up there with the music on Forever Changes, though very different stylistically. A great hard rock/jazz fusion jam.
Hey - any chance of getting a copy of that whole 40 min Love TV special you speak about, would be Love-ly to see all of that. Have loads of good stuff from 60s to swap? Let me know if you can - cheers Lenny of The Thanes, Scotland
@DanielBowden1975 I know what you mean. All of Love's album were great in there own way. I even like False Start, although it comes in last place. Four Sail has some great rock numbers on their that can't be beat. I like to pair Four Sail with Out There and Da Capo with Forever Changes. Thinking about those albums reminds me of good times in Colorado and New Mexico. Forever Changes especially. It is one the best records ever put to tape.
Argue amongst yourselves, I'm just going to listen to Love . Old , middle, late and even Current with no restrictions or quotas.I come to praise Caesar not to bury him.
Ya know man, from your reply i guessed your age exactly. The video that you decided to embrace as the Love group are not even the original band. What about Bryan McLean & Johnny Echols? Don't they count ? Ever heard of "Forever Changes "? C1967. There is nothing posted on the tube from that Album. It was a book of anthems of my generation. I revere the Great Arthur Lee and I miss him.But it's like a mother or father dying and the children carry on .
was bryan mclean on the foursail album? i wish i could talk to some people that were around in LA then...and saw them live alot. hit me up if that is you
To really appreciate Love you need to listen to all their stuff really, not just Forever Changes. In fact, I sometimes like the new band better because they were heavier. Four Sail, Da Capo and Out Here are also a favorite of mine and I've listened to them equally. 7&7 Is was the song that got me into them, but I have to admit that Forever Changes was the first vinyl I bought from them over 10 years. For a long time that was the only one you could find.
AThis is a whole different band since Forever Changes. Two days ago I met Johnny Echols as the current Love kicked off their tour in NJ. Pathetic turnout, but it wouldn't have made a difference if Arthur Lee was there.Poor guys fell into a non rockin' venus fly trap of a town, but the 40 or so fans that were there had it all to themselves. And the band was wonderful ! At times i had tears in my eyes. Arthur was there in Spirit .. Rock on LOVE !
current love? love aint love without arthur lee man... dont get me wrong. i would love to see them play some classics. but arthur lee is the rebel that makes that punk rock connection oh soo easy. i love the band. arthur lee. every song is a revolution
Arthur Lee was not percieved as an icon in 1967. There were so many. Love just happened, and I was lucky to be there.Currently I appreciate the band that played with Arthur for !0 years or so before he died, with the addition of Johnny E,original lead guitarist . Also , there is nothing PUNK about ARTHUR LEE." 7&7 IS " perhaps a bit punkish, but mostly the message is Love and holding on to what you've got is part of it. Remember ! Forever Changes.
im not saying the music sounds like black flag or anything...and i wasnt there, but from what i know about him he was a fucking rebel and he did what the hell he wanted and didnt care what anyone said...thats punk rock. LOVE is big in the punk scene in bakersfield atleast. ive read that electra gave the doors favoritism because they would do what the label wanted more then love would. if anyone has anything to teach me bout love lemme know...i wanna know more!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't give a shit what the Doors were made to do. What they did was beyond imagination. Why make bullshit comparisons The Doors will live forever.Just enjoy the music .
I saw this version of Love on their 1970 "tour" to Europe. Just amazing to be back almost 40 years ago - and surely one of the best quality video footage of any band currently on the Tube.
Well worth getting - lots of conversation with Arthur and other band members. I was given a copy recently by Start Productions who made the film. To my shame I was completely ignorant of Love until then - even though I've been a musician since the late 60s - just how did I miss out on such a genius? It's been great catching up though!!!
aww man...i talked to one of the guys who made it... i LOVE LOVE!!! haha. ive been listening to Four Sail and Out there...i never heard Out There till recently .i like the first and fourth songs alot. i wanna see it. upload and send to me!!!!mickbolton1!!!!!
The quality of this footage is astonishing. It looks like it was shot yesterday. Was this for Danish TV? A documentary? Or a private collector? The quality of the music is equally astonishing. Four Sail is an underappreciated album. Aside from August, my other favorite tracks are I'm With You and Nothing.
I have not seen any old footage, we have over 4000 records, when I show him this...he will flip. Thank you for posting. old material is difficult to find.
Well, there are quite a few of us who also are crazy about Four Sail. I also have a vinyl copy I bought at Bearswax in Lexington. August, Robert Montgomery, Singing Cowboy, and Neil's Song are fantastic!
Although I've had Love's records in my collection for ages, I really didn't listen to them a lot until a couple of years ago. Arthur Lee's songwriting is so Strange, yet it all makes sense. And I like this track 'cos the guitarist gets to cut loose...
Yes, this is astonishing - one of those moments that make YouTube so great. For me, Lee's up there with McGuinn, Morrison and Lou Reed as the four titans of American rock. What wouldn't we give for a clip of the original Love with this sound and visual quality? There's supposed to be professional footage of them in Bill Graham's archive, shot at the Fillmore West, c.1967. Wait for that to appear on the Tube, folks...
I agree it would be wonderful to see a clip of the original lineup Live but even :Message to Pretty" is down now. My suspicion is considering corporations are drm'ing us to death that it is NOT for the artist's sake since many are gone now, Arthur and most of Love, Jimi, Tommy Bolin to name only a few who's clips here are disappearing at a steady pace. I can't help but recall that when this clip was filmed all drinking water was free. It will be no surprise when YouTube is PayTube.
WOW...unbelievable footage. Arthur Lee and all versions of Love were way underappreciated at the time. Maybe someday they will get the recognition they deserve - HINT HINT R & R Hall Of Fame !
Sorry, but they weren't underappreciated by all, I saw them in the 60's and they were always the talk of the town here in L.A. People waited outside if they couldn't get in just to hear them through the doors.
R.I.P. Arthur R.I.P. Goerge Suranovich. Thanks for posing this-it was on two years ago along w/"Doggone" and a short interview w/Arthur-glad this song is back in color-anyone know the whereabouts of Frank Fayad? (Awesome Bass Player)

Why make bullshit comparisons The Doors will live forever.Just enjoy the music .
vintagezigg 2 years ago
The Doors were more willing to tour. Arthur Lee was apparently, er, difficult.
But Arthur Lee was the one who told Elektra executives about the Doors in the first place!

Fantastic !!!
Thank you, tkskott.
I saw this version of Love on their 1970 "tour" to Europe. Just amazing to be back almost 40 years ago - and surely one of the best quality video footage of any band currently on the Tube.

sooo good, anyone seen LOVE STORY? the new doc about Love? i want it soo bad, lemme know what its like

Well worth getting - lots of conversation with Arthur and other band members. I was given a copy recently by Start Productions who made the film. To my shame I was completely ignorant of Love until then - even though I've been a musician since the late 60s - just how did I miss out on such a genius? It's been great catching up though!!!

One of the most underrated groups of all time. Their album Four Sail is a must. The original of this song, wish someone would post it.

And I like this track 'cos the guitarist gets to cut loose...
cdadave83814 2 years ago
Yes, this is astonishing - one of those moments that make YouTube so great. For me, Lee's up there with McGuinn, Morrison and Lou Reed as the four titans of American rock. What wouldn't we give for a clip of the original Love with this sound and visual quality? There's supposed to be professional footage of them in Bill Graham's archive, shot at the Fillmore West, c.1967. Wait for that to appear on the Tube, folks...
nibs2lou 2 years ago

Maybe someday they will get the recognition they deserve - HINT HINT R & R Hall Of Fame !
dvdbtlr 2 years ago
Sorry, but they weren't underappreciated by all, I saw them in the 60's and they were always the talk of the town here in L.A. People waited outside if they couldn't get in just to hear them through the doors.
RIP Arthur Lee
