  • My Great Grand Parents were on it and my Mother was supposed to be. Thank god she didn't go. She was only 3.

  • The Doria was one of the most beautiful ships to sink. She and her twin sister the Cristoforo Colombo were the finest looking liners on the Italy-New York service.

  • could she not have been saved

  • Almost forgot:

    It's maritime, (not 'maratime').

  • The Andrea Doria. WOW!

  • @starsora1 some say the MV Dona Paz was the worst sinking

  • One thing about the RMS Titanic most don't know is that it had the largest amount of crew lost. Nearly 800.

  • You can watch this documentary free on PBS . Google video - secrets of the dead andrea doria

  • I invite you to screen the whole documentary. You can buy a DVD on the web site of sd cinematografica

  • haha since it is an italian documentary..I guess the blame would be put on the stockholm..:-)

  • @henrikarvidsson Putting nationalisms aside, now it is accepted that both crews made mistakes, but also that the biggest blunder by far was made by the Stockholm, whose Third Mate disastrously misread the radar signals and made the ship steer starboard when the Andrea Doria had already begun an evasive run on her port side. Hung on the walls of Kings Point Academy, where the collision is subject of teaching, you find the portrait of the Andrea Doria's captain, Piero Calamai.

  • @henrikarvidsson Nationsalisms apart, we know today both crews made mistakes, but the biggest blunder by far was made by the Stockholm,'s Third Mate who misread the radar and made the ship steer starboard when the Andrea Doria had already begun an evasive run on her port side. He confounded right with left on the radar. Hung on the walls of Kings Point Academy, where the collision has been analysed and is a teaching subject, you find the portrait of the Andrea' Doria's captain, Piero Calamai.

  • The MV Wilhelm Gustloff is the ship graced with the greatest loss of life, that being 9,400 souls, she was torpedoed in 1945. Titanic was a mere 1,517 a pittence in comparison. When will people learn that the stigma surrounding Titanic is NOT the loss of life but the fact she was deemed "unsinkable" (by newspapers) Harland and Wolffe nor White Star ever stated she was unsinkable, combine this with her maiden voyage and this is what makes her stand out.

  • my grandma was on it

  • Get a good friendship with good girls naneedj.info

you are the only solution for bbw naneedj.info

  • This somehow reminds me of ghost ship i cant put my finger on it though.

  • *sniff* <:-(

  • But what about the Stockholm?

  • @rrthiel

The Stockholm had significant damage but made it into port on her own steam. She even took many of the survivors off the Andrea Doria.

  • @rrthiel for what I heard, it survived and limped to a harbor in New York

  • what happened to the Stalkholm?

  • good commercial

  • .....

  • Who are all these clods saying that no one died on the Andrea Doria/Stockholm? HellOOOOoooo, there was a total of 51 deaths upon impact between the two ships...46 deaths on the Andrea Doria and 5 deaths on the Stockholm. Do some research you clowns!

  • Who are all these clods saying that no one died on the Andrea Doria/Stockholm? HellOOOOOOoooo, there was a total of 51 casualties upon impact. Do some research you clowns!

  • no, no, no the worst shipwreck in history is titanic

  • @starsora1 we just say that it was "one of the greatest marine disasters ever", not the worst ever! :-)

  • @starsora1 no no no - it was the wilhelm gustloff ( german liner ) sunk in the baltic sea in 1945 by a russian submarine with nearly 10000 casualties ( german refugees)

  • @starsora1 wrong titanic was not the worst disaster when in fact the william gustloff was titanic is famous for the stories of the passengers and crew

  • @jackthayer good to see that many people know of the Wilhelm Gustlof.

  • @starsora1 unfortunatly, you're incorrect, the worst one in history is the Wilhelm Gustlof, over 12 thousand lives lost

  • @starsora1 The recently worst maritime disaster of all time was the MV Dona Paz.

  • @starsora1 No Wilhelm Gustloff is the worst.

  • @starsora1 you are wrong the worst one is william gustloff

  • whats show is this from?

  • @24chancer the documentary is called "The sinking of the Andrea Doria", it has been aired on "Secrets of the death" on PBS, on ZDF in Germany and in other countries all around the world. To know more about it, please visit our website

  • "Do I save the ship or the passengers"? Are these assholes serious?

  • no true one of the worst ship wrecks the lusitania, britannic, titanic, and the possideon were far worse than that thing

  • Tonight's the anniversary of her sinking.

  • they had color photo wow

  • @90Blakey first color photos were taken by the french in ww1, i think the guys name was lumiere

  • Its the same think with The SS Admiral Nachimov in 1986

  • so thats why the arpha and radar and other electronic navigation invented because the tradegy of the sea.

  • what's this documentary called?

  • 1:30 here is reproduced the main fatal error of italian captain: "timone tutto a sinistra!!!" (turn the timon to the full left). For navigation rules they should have pulled right; so that's what Stocholm did but not expecting the Andrea Doria doing the opposite!! However there should have been a cinematic miscalculation or presumption too before.

  • andrea is a atalian liner sorry for the bad spelling lol

  • Oh my god my friend Grazyina just went to a cruise and nowall these videos are just making me more sarced and worried

  • If you ask me everyone should have got off that ship it took 11 hours to sink!

The only excuse of death would be the propellers hitting the life boat or something

  • This is not the most tragic shipwreck,

The worst appearently was in Canada, from the Empress Of Ireland.

The Storstad colided with it and its Canada's worst marine wreck.

It's probably the worst American one too.

I live in America, I was born here, have hardly any American history learned though

  • I wouldn't say its the most beautiful ship in the world, but it is cool looking ;-) not many ships are made to look like that anymore most are big bulky cruise liners

  • The Andrea Doria was an Italian passenger liner.

  • Andrea Doria, is it some German liner or something?

R.I.P to all the people who died.

  • No, it's an Italian vessel.

  • the doria was an italian cruise liner. it sunk after colliding with the stockholm

  • She was the nicest italian ship of the era.

the two elder gentleman italian speaking are the 2nd and 3rd mates who were on watch that night

  • it was an italian liner

  • Italian.

  • Ehm not exactly jmpollyroco, it was an Italian liner and it's largely reputed as the most beautiful ship ever .

  • Italian Liner.

  • Italian liner and no one died.

  • Does Andrea Doria sound German to you? E Italiano!

  • Italian R.I.P Andrea Doria sinking victims.

  • Italian

  • It was an Italian liner

  • no she was Italian

  • it was an Italian liner.

  • no it was italian

  • @jmpollyroco Andrea Doria was an Italian liner actually

  • they allways say "its one of the worst ship wrecks in history"

  • The Italian crew got really fucked over by the Swedes, especially commander Calamai, the worst thing is that Carsten, the Swede responsible for this disaster, claims it was not his fault, but the Italians'.What a coward bastard...

  • wow thats so sad!

  • so sad

  • this is soooo coool

the boat is coming to the italian liner

    aaaaaaaaaaaaahhh

  • this was not the worst sinking then the Titanic, Brittanic, Louisiantic and so on.

  • is there any movies of these? please rerply someone

  • This is my most favorite chipwreck...

  • The Stockholm is still in service, heavily modified but still aroun!

  • nobody died though!

  • My favorite ship wreck..

  • titanic was worst and most beautiful XD

  • HEY!Many MANY more people died on titanic and lustania and emprriss of irland. This(Althogh terriabel)is small potatos compared to others.Worst disater....NOT!(Still bad though)

  • so who was at fault??

  • It is one of them because she was riped open with only 1 compartment flooded

  • Andrea Doria =)

  • i just saw this on tv

  • awesome video

R.I.P. to all the people that died on July 24 1956

  • @nick87265 actually sir, it was July 25th 1956

@BorisGodunov I agree with your claim, it was more along the lines of a more infamous maritime disaster more over "the worst shipwreck in history" but any loss of life whether it be one person or 100, it's a horrible thing.

  • @nick87265 uuh, as far as I know, it was on the day I was born, July 25th, 1956,

  • i always get shivers down my back at the end when the piano palys

R.I.P to all those that dies on July 24 1956

  • Wilhelm Gustloff was the worst in history. I believe it was late 1944, sunk by the USSR. At any rate I think the reference is to her cost and treasures lost at the time of her sinking not the death total. There are several ships that had great 1,00 death totals. Titanic is more famous for the rich that died and and her size at that time. In Canada ours is the Empress of India killing well over a thousand is barely heard of today.

  • what the hell is wrong with the swdish

stuff alway happens to the italians

  • fuck the swedish

why does everything bad happen to the italians????????

  • "One of the worst shipwrecks in history?" Not even close. While the deaths of 56 people is unquestionably a tragedy, it was small potatoes compared to countless other shipwrecks that involved far greater loss of life.

  • ...but do keep in mind the enormous number of shipwrecks, many without any losses of life, that have occurred over time...relative to that, a wreck resulting in 56 deaths is terrible.

  • Actually, they mean by the wreck itself. Its draped in fishing nets, the weather there changes almost always from sun to storms, and many deaths have happened trying to dive to her.

  • I think it is the worst because it was the only recorded account of two ships colliding with each other in open ocean.

56 people died becasue of more human error than any other shipwreck.

  • I think that the Andrea Doria really was engineered well. I can't believe how long it took for this ship to sink with a hole so large.

  • "one death is a tragedy many deaths is a statistic"- Joseph Stalin said that.

You are right. Titanic 1517 Deaths , Lusitania 1198, and a german refugee ship (I cant remember its name right now)

    15,000 deaths.

  • I know seriously! Didnt an estimated 10,000 perish (R.I.P) when the Gustloff went down?

  • the whole edmund fitzgerald crew died on impact

  • @BorisGodunov worst was the WILHELM GUSTLOFF with a death of 9000 to 10000

  • @24chancer actually the worst maritime disaster was the sinking of the titanic.

  • @BorisGodunov It is similar to the sinking of the "Wahine" during a tropical cyclone in Wellington Harbour in 1968, although in that case it was a collision with land, not with a ship, which did it in. Similar long agony, very similar death toll. Then there's the "Queen of the North" ... sad that the prettiest ships meet such ends, but then ships don't live long.

  • @BorisGodunov not the worst the worst is the wihelm gustloff because 9000 - 100000 people died after it was torpedeoed 3 times on jan 30 1945

  • I saw this whole documentary on PBS and it was one of the best documentaries I've ever seen.

  • My Great Grandma

A Passanger on the Andrea Doria

    When the boat went down

    She made the dead list

    But she was not dead

She was alive and well and

she made it to Febuary 22nd 2008

  • Actually, the Doria had a nearly identical twin sister ship named the Cristoforo Colombo.

  • Do any of you know about the SS Augustus?

  • Augustus was a two stacked motor liner wasn't she? Maybe she was torpedoed during WW2 like the Rex and Conte Di Savoia? I've never been able to find out.The Conte Biancamano survived well into the 50's,anyway.

  • There were two Augustus.

The old one was what you say. In the early '40s was being converted in aircraft carrier SPARVIERO,but the job was unfinished. she was scrapped later.

The second Augustus was similar to Andrea Doria, but motor engined. it is reported in 1990 as ASIAN PRINCESS

  • Augustus was in effect a two stack motor ship. She was intended to be converted in aircraft carrier SPARVIERO,but the project was abandoned after the armistice. scrapped 1947 after being sunk in Genoa .

Augustus n.2 was another motor vessel, class Giulio Cesare (somilar to andrea doria.)

built 1952 for south america line of the ITALIA.

it was reported to exist as ASIAN PRINCESS in philippine 1990.

  • what?!the sinking is the worst shipwreck?!no it wasn't!titanic was!!!

  • One of

  • ONE OF the worst (in peacetimes)

  • USS Arizona was the worst sinking. Titanic does not have a memorial over it neither does Andrea Doria. And, USS Arizona is one of the only ships in the world still lekaing oil after it was sunk.

  • Irrelevant. The Titanic and Andrea Doria have no memorials above them because they are in deep waters -- there are memorials elsewhere. The USS Arizona only has a memorial over it because its sinking depth is so shallow that B and X barbettes remain above the surface, which is also why its oil leaks are visible. By death tolls, the Arizona was tragic (1,177 dead), but ranks about 10th in capital warships. Add in aircraft carriers and troop or refugee transports, and the Arizona drops even more.

  • memorials dont mean crap. you cant put a memorial above titanic cuz its like some 3 miles below the surface. all 3 were terrible tradgedies. is it that important as to witch one is the worst.

  • It's about 12000 miles.

  • The Titanic wasn't either. There have been many many many more horrible shipwrecks like the Cap Arcona and Wilhelm Gustloff. The Wilhelm Gustloff is the worst with a loss of somewhere from 5300 to 9400 dead and 1500 survivors. Half of the dead were children.

  • Guys Titanic is by far the worst ship sinking in the world. over 1,000 ppl died many of them were children no ship sinking could compare to Titanic! imo

  • the Dona Paz and Wilhelm gustloff were the worst ship sinking in the world 4,000 on the dona paz and 10,000 on the Wilhelm gustloff

  • the titanic was just one of the better known wrecks because of all of the publicity around it. What about the Lusitania(the cruise liner that was torpedoed by german sub) or the tiantic's sister ship the britanica

  • Bullcrap. You have no clue.

Look up the German passenger liner Wilhelm Gustloff, which was torpedoed by a Russian sub and took 9400 people with her to the depths.

Ever googled stuff up before posting a lot of ingnorant bull?

  • think so.

  • Wasn't it the Stockholm that the Andria Doria collided with?

  • yes

  • The Andrea Doria was one of the most beautiful ship ever built, a really Italian gem. The name is the same of a famous italian admiral.

  • Youre right! She was the beautiest. (Sorry my english i'm not so good:P )

  • SS Normandie

    most beautiful ocean liner ever

sadly got accidently burnt down in New York harbor by some sloppy welder in 1943

  • shame they got the engineering and the seamanship wrong -da vinci is wincing in his grave

  • how did it sink

  • got rammed by the Stockholm.

  • I've read that Chrysler had some prototype/showcars in the hold.

  • Anyone know where I can find the full documentry????? Luv ta watch it...

  • dream ship

  • EVERY ONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN THE AnDREA DORIA COME WATCH MY VIDEO ON THE ANDREA DORIA!

  • a terrible disaster & a sad loss of a beautiful ship but consider that loss of life was fairly low most died in initial collition nothing could be done for them AD lasted for more thn 8 hrs before sinking by then shps & a/c had evacuated all survivors Just 4 yrs later 2 a/c collided over NYC & 134 people died air travel by then had triumphed over sea but to this day an air disater is more final than a sea one...GO FIGURE What Do You Think? Please Reply

  • actually it took over 11 hours to sink!

  • Isn't that the ship were all those people were murdered by Nazi bandits who had their sights set on gold bars in the ships storage but somehow they and the whole ship dissapeared and rumors dispearsed that they're souls were being harvested so a forsaken could find salvation.

  • you are thinking of the antonio graza from the movie ghost ship. the ship in the movie is based on the andrea doria but the story is fiction

  • Andrea Doria the most beautiful ship ever built .

  • If anyone is truely interested in the Andrea Doria check out my National History Day video on the Andrea Doria!

  • The Andrea Doria Was the most beautiful ship ive ever seen for now! Im sorry for the people that died D: May god bless them forever and ever

  • i watched a prgramme about that ship called(the sinking of the andrea doria)

anther ship colided into it and it kept going

i thought it was a sad prgramme but i liked it

  • the Stockholm that sunk the Andrea Doria is still in service as the SS Agean in the Classic INternational Cruises, but it only sails in mainland Europe... I'd have to learn more languages.. :(

  • The Andrea Doria sank on July 25, 1956 and 56 people lost their lifes that day! Also the Andrea Doria had over one million dollars in artwork on the ship and was sometimes called a floating museum. One of my friends has a uncle who is a survivor of the Andrea Doria! The Andrea Doria lies in 350 feet of water 25 miles south of Nantucket Lightship!

  • it's not that deep. it's at around 250 fsw

  • The Andrea Doria would be a nice ship today, I think it has to be built again. It would be very nice to travel in a transatlantic liner like that.

  • Well,

I totally agree with you, but the problem is that crash between the 2 ships was so horrible people might not want to go on a ship that claimed so manny lifes!

  • it didnt take any lifes i believe. everyone abandoned the ship while the captin stayed back believing someone would tug it to saftey which he knew it was to late so he later abandoned

  • i'd like that the Andrea Doria will be built again.

  • how did it sink

  • she was hit by the stockholm

  • The Andrea Doria sank when another ship called the Stockholm hit her! It took around 11 hours to sink.

  • The Andrea Doria sank when another ship called the Stockholm crashed into it

  • My grandfather know the captain ther was frends

  • woah, thats so cool!

  • y did it sank?

  • The Andrea Doria sank because it hit another ship called the Stockholm. The Andrea Doria now lies 45 miles south of nantucket light ship in 250 ft of water

  • IT was hit by a diferent ship

  • The Andrea Doria sank on July 25, 1956 and now lies in 250 ft of water 45 miles south of Nantucket light ship. I do agree with everyone's thoughts that it was Carstons (3rd mate) fault for the collison.

  • MThe Andrea Doria sank on July 25, 1956 and over

46 people were killed in total. 40 people from and the Andrea Doria and 6 from the Stockholm that were part of the crew. I do agree that it was Carstons (the third mate) fault because he was suppost to alert the captian of the Stockholm if they incountered heavy fog.

  • Qe2 is the most beautiful liner to me ( no disrespect to such a palace on the sea like andrea doria )

  • If you wher in there whoud you be scard?

  • yes,

You should when this accident happened there was a great amount of panick on the ship

  • would you like to know something quite cool?

the man in charge of the other ship, stockholm, was my great-grandfather, Gunnar Nordenson.

    so, now you know that.

    byebye.

  • cool! I wish I had one of the captian related to me. One of my friends uncles was a passenger on the Andrea Doria!

  • COOL!!!

  • I really want to dive o that ship. Ill get my deep diver licence soon.

  • PLEASE!

    Be careful.

You may already know that the wreck of the Andrea Doria is VERY treacherous and has claimed lives even after it has sunk.

    May God be you.

  • Hope you have some really good tech and wreck diving experience because It'll take a lot more than just doing your deep to dive the Doria.

  • Well that might not be the best place to start out diving because so MANY people have lost their lives trying to dive down to the Andrea Doria. I bet you have heard of David Bright before he died trying to dive down to the Andrea Doria. BE CAREFUL!

  • you can dive it. you will need to have a trimix certification as well. drysuit diver, deep diver, and if you are planning to go inside the wreck you will need a penetration cert. after you get those you need experience. you can do it but it takes a long time to be ready for this kind of technical diving

  • Modern computer tracking has proven that the Stockholm was clearly at fault for the accident when it suddenly veared to the right and into the Andrea Doria. The officer of the Stockholm lied thru his teeth all these years about this. He should rot in hell for both sinking the beautiful Andrea Doria and for all the people he killed in the collision.

  • No disrespect intended, but we must remeber that a disaster is not made by one mistake alone.

If speed was reduced on iether ship, if the fog hadn't been so heavy, if so many things that DID happen, DIDN'T, then maybe this horrible event wouldn't have happened.

Maybe it should just be chalked up to fate.

(However, I DO also believe that the 3rd officer lied)

  • Actually both ships did reduce their speeds, but it takes over a mile to turn the ships because they are so big.

  • there was also the fact that the crew of the stockholm was not correctly reading there radar, and they did not have there fog horn sounding alerts while they were in such thick fog

  • where's the rest of the video or what documentary or video did this go to?

  • This documentary was aired in the United States by PBS, in Germany by ZDF, in Italy by RAI, in the United Kingdom by History Channel, and by other broadcasters all around the world.
