  • they intentionally didnt film it but the cat was annoyed by the noise and took off during the song

  • the version of John Lee is better

  • I dig the rhythm changes.

  • The cat is Robert Johnson...

  • this is the blues cat!

  • Wonderful. But I'm not cool with alternate tunings myself... I'm confused enough with the standard one already!

  • What an eclectic, almost violent, style of playing blues guitar.

  • @LapisLee Rory Block's style is so "from the gut", from the soul, you get gooseflesh listening to her. I did when I saw her live a few years ago.

  • @LapisLee good innit!

  • @rrch88 I was shocked that she didn't allow videos when we saw her at the Sedalia Blues Festival.

  • @LapisLee not the way i'd do things but each to their own!

  • She''s amazing

  • kicks booty

  • i want that blues cat

  • I have seen this video like 50 times but I just keep on watchin....

  • Me too :) Don't know why but it's a really attractive video.

  • rory is an wildcat.

  • He'd be proud of this one

  • Its a hard song to play and sing at the same time because the timings are different...

  • Rory doesn't just play Robert Johnson she channels him...!

  • Not a lot of people play Robert Johnson with such authenticity. Rory is really quite amazing. She's been around for years and I'm just catching on. All that wasted time!

  • This is a great version, Shes done well

  • That must be why she is a 3-time W.C. Handy award winner.

  • that cat loves them blues smart kitty LOL :)

  • She holds nothin back. amazing

  • vaya vieja loca!!

  • Is every Robert Johnson song in Open G Capo 2nd fret? Or are some of his songs in Open A?

  • His tunings are hotly debated. There's another video with Rory where she explains how she reverse-engineers his songs to figure out the tuning.

  • The new Hal Leanord seems to have it figured out. Fascinating book.

  • Often open D tuning then capo on 2nd fret puts you in E..D with the F#...not DADGAD...

  • @TJColatrella You are wrong. It's open G

  • @tinpanalley67 This song is in open C then capo on the second fret.

  • @MrWadestar Get some Rory Block DVDs. She says it's open G with capo on 2nd so it's A.

  • @tinpanalley67 It is in open G, but the capo is on the second fret making it open A

  • I saw her in concert a few weeks ago (Acoustic Music San Diego). The show was fantastic. Her voice and her guitar filled the whole place...

  • james you obviously dont know much about the blues, but clearly a lot on unnecessary sexist attitudes, i suggest for this web 2s and users benefit you crawl in a hole and never come out. Wonderful cover, there are improvements that could be made on the vocals but generally a great robert johnson cover, to cover RJ's music great talent is needed, eric clapton even states that it takes two guitarist to cover RJ songs!

  • rory is so sexy...

  • Wow..alive, sparkling and exellent play!

  • You'll need better bait than that, Hutch.

  • richiebear1969, you know what? Nobody cares.

  • And I like mashed potatoes with butter & sour cream.

    Duh.

  • I think she's pretty killer, got a lot of soul and pounds on that guitar!

  • actually, she ain't bad at all..who plays guitar here has ever tried playing RJ music like he did? it's pretty hard..

  • The woman is wonderful and the blues is wonderful of Robert Johnson.

The cat is lovely. Rory is sexy!

It wanted to hear by the live, and it came to want to meet by all

means. I want you to come to Japan.

  • Very impressive, but I think she need to slow down a little bit

  • I guess having W.C. Handy awards for her guitar work doesn't put her up on the top of any lists, eh? Like her or not, she is ridiculously talented. She has 5 W.C. Handy awards, and is recognized as one of the premiere authorities on country blues.

  • Today 11-6-08 - Rory's 59th Birthday! While I love all her delta blues stuff, the 1st thing I heard her sing was her LP, 1977's Intoxication, then got her 1975 LP Rory Block

    Love them!!!

  • (cont.)

Rory throws herself into her performances, and there's absolutely no shame in that.

Referring to a musician in such pejorative ways as I've seen here does nothing to benefit the musical community.

    Just my two cents.

  • There seems to be an almost unnatural hate for either Rory or her playing. The distinction seems to gray at some point. I'll concede that she's not Robert Johnson, and she doesn't sound like him. She sounds like a blues singer. The resemblance to Johnson's playing style is uncanny, and it's clear she's studied his work meticulously over the years.

Music is one of those aspects of life where you can completely get lost in the moment, whether you're a performer or a spectator... (cont.)

  • I just can't watch her mangle this music. Is it the frenetic playing or the voice that still sounds like Greenwich Village folk scene. I don't know, but as someone who grew up around Helena, Ark., this sounds like the blues just fine, but is missing the soul of the blues. I have seen many old black men around that could blow this away and they would never break a sweat. She puts practically everything she has into it and only comes close.

  • Who said you had to be an African American to play the blues? They invented the style and some of the best were African, but blues is in us all.

  • good but i thought she played it too fast in my opinion

  • she's so much better than clapton. obviously no one touches johnson

  • Rory is The best! I'd bet anyone that every time she is on stage or at home playing Mr. Johnson is standing right beside her tapping his foot in approval!

  • It's just plain weird that some people criticize this artist because of her gender or her race, not because of her skill (or lack of it). The only standard of criticism, in anybody's performance, should be: am I moved by what I'm hearing? If you can't answer that question with your eyes closed, you're probably hearing-impaired and shouldn't be commenting on the music in the first place.

  • Just compared it to Eric's version; Rory's rhythm is closer to Mr. Johnson's. Well done!

  • Annoying to say the least. It's bloody forced is what it is. Could care less that you can match RJ's songs note-for-note. The vocal done by this wench is bunk.

  • I dont know with all respect, maybe a bit skitzoid be it for a woman or man.

  • very nice ,but it's not a fucking race to finish the song ..chill out woman and play some blues

  • just look at son house´s death letter...he played nearly the same way...its not too fast...

  • Saw her years ago, and was able to chat with her briefly afterward. She is truly the Real Thing, and she embodies presence and sincerity. And plays like a hot damn!

  • Oh Rory, you sing and play as the best I ever heard!!! Agressive yes! Why should a woman not play agressive? She better than any man I ever heard playing like this!!!! xxxxxxx LOVE from Holland Patty xxx

  • You obviously never heard Robert Johnson or Eric Clapton. Check them out before you make comments in public.

  • Sear Sir, I know your feeling a bit down now because there's a woman playing better then many man. And yes I know Robert Johnson very well and Eric Clapton to, but I still think Rory is better. Sorry that I made you a little angry...haha! stay strong! bey bey Patty

  • "rather aggressively for woman"?

It's hard to even know how to respond to that.

No woman ever had the blues enough to be aggressive about it?

You may not be fit to even comment.

  • "Aggressively for a woman" ...for a woman what?

    That's the real thing, baby.

I guess its called the blues.

That woman knows how to play and sing it.

  • She plays rather aggressively for a woman. But she nailed those blues right.

  • She definitely plays with heart. But, IMHO she plays the song a little too fast. The guitar in the original is not "sparse" but definitely a little more open. Playing the song like this makes it sound like a dump truck driving through the front of a liquor store.

  • She's been around for decades and she still looks great. I just loved her guitar style from the first time i heard her do "Catastrophe Rag". The best lady since Jo Anne Kelly.

  • Hey Roberta Johnson! She plays guitar better than she sings

  • Ha ha, listen to Charlie Patton! Way ahead of you. Sounds like Patton? Only superficially my friend. Nowhwere near the same amount of patience & wisdom in the playing.

  • meopinion - Which is your favourite song by Rorrence Block?

  • She's much fast, she doesn't breath!!!

  • Hey opinion... Listen to some Charlie Patton. She hits his style pretty dead on.

  • I love Rory! She has been an inspiration to me! I had the pleasure of meeting her in person! What a wonderful lady!

  • Wow, talk about overplaying. Put-on fiery playing is called 'wanking', she has more in common with some heavy metal guitarists than any country blues great I've ever heard. Overkill

  • She plays real Blues BIG FAN way back 1970s from

kicking mule days also this Lady came off the stage &

    hang

Thank you Rory I play today becaues of your days with
