in israel there are over 100000 refugees from the sudan ,they work ,get ss benefits and have their own pubs , sorry any one left to call us apartheid ?the egyptians shoot them on sight ,no one else wants them we embrace them ,who calls the kettle black ?the bloody e.u.
when a jew sang kol nidre in europe ,or in africa ,he sung it close to the local church or mosque, for fear they would hear the jewish prayer and kill us all
ashkenaz jewery, sang "opera",jews of israel ,named palestite later by the turks brits and way before the romans, who kicked them tushes cause in the ghetto wich my african american broyhers like to term is actually a jewish invention, for being a jew, sing the same as their muslim counterparts, you know why?
his father was a cantor, jolson was born in russia. if one is brutally analytical, the american entertainment industry, whether in film or music, owes its very being and nature to this group of people. stardom comes from abraham.
Pop singer. Sounds untrained. Does not seem to have big open pipes. He may or may not have understood the meaning of the text: The agony, the shame, the humiliation of missing the mark. Of course with old technology, might be hard to know how he really sounded.
Better than Jan Peerce or Richard Tucker, though they were both wonderful singers. The emotion in Jolson's voice says it all. Gave me goose bumps and brought tears to my eyes.
@StJouish I agree with you, never is a long time. And certainly Oysher's version is absolutely brilliant. I am a big fan of Oysher and didn't mean to take anything away from him. But Jolie's version has the yiddische kvetch that all the other versions lack.
@rkkrakusin Musical talent is different sometimes without being necessarily better. My daughter is a jazz sax player. She has perfect pitch and is excellent at improvisation. But in terms of mechanic skill with her instrument, maybe other people are better. Overall she is still a darn good musician. Possibly these disputations about who is best is like trying to decide if steak is better than lobster.
show me one man that says my country is apartheid?

Oral tradition helps generations to understand more clearly what is being said. Al Jolsons version of the song is great

Why wouldn't he understand the text? He would have heard it every Yom Kippur.

Watching this while eating a bowl of kishke nosh mit tsimmis. Jolie brought deep emotion to this hymn, sad as it might be.
