There seems to be some confusion between Flash and PDF. Flash is a proprietary format which requires a player from Adobe, and which is not supported by Apple on iOS devices. PDF is an open document format that Apple's software reads just fine. PDFs have been readable on the iPhone and iPad from the very beginning.
Yes you can read PDFs on iPad via Safari and its email application. It is interesting that the iPad does not use Adobe technology to read PDFs. Apple has its own PDF reader. The Apple PDF reader is much faster in downloading, displaying and scrolling! Apple has done a fantastic job of creating a superb reading experience for the reader.
iPad cannot be used to read pdf files of research papers! Only to surf and review abstracts of articles posted on line. iPad cannot load Adobe Flash player or reader and so no Adobe products can be used with this device. Boo!! I hope this can be added in the future to enhance the utility of iPad.
