Rep. Brown is right in 2:22 that "if you build a [working] system [somewhere] in this country, and people could see it, the rest of the country would DEMAND it"
Acela is a nice start, but it is NOT a high-speed train.
I'm shure this will happened soon, beside, Nevada is getting their high speed rail put in calls the Desert Xpress and it will travel from Victorvill CA to Las Vegas Traveling 150 MPH and the project starts next year and operate in service in 2014.
Maglev is the most expensive train of all high speed rail it cost 20 millions of dollar per mile. Japan nearly killed themself on putting in their Maglev rail system.
Canada really needs a high speed rail system. We don't even have an electric intercity rail system (not even commuter rails). We depend too much on cars and diesel too much, so it's time to make a high-speed rail for Canada.
A high speed magne-lev is a brilliant concept in my opinion which will bring America's train system infrastructure up to speed with those of the EU and Asia.
In France with have the TGV high speed train (250mph) but because of the stikes, power failures and vandalism, the train's average speed is about 25mph.
I would love to take the train more often from Lancaster, PA to Philly and beyond. Just not enough departure times to fit into my schedule -- if I miss the train it is another hour until the next. I would like to see more trains and THEN some high speed connections that FOLLOW Interstate highways. Watching a train zoom by would make people think twice. Currently, they follow old highways and pass through no name towns.
Meglev rail is the way to go. We want to push the speed and performance to compete with air to some extent. Rail by electric would reduce any pollution from to many flights going from point a to b within say a region - flights would be permissible for going long distance. One inventive idea is to find a way to interlock our cars - on a meglev system - travel in the comfort of our own vehicles (if we have one or in a passenger compartment otherwise) - when the train stops - we simply drive away.
yea stuwiitube, we also should eat more grass and less meat too. and and we should walk more too, and and an we have goats cut our lawns an grow our own vegs an hunt the were rabbit too.
The problem is that most Americans (such as myself) live too far from work to use either of those. I walk when I can, but I have to drive to get to most places.
We don't have one because each city wants to get "Paid off to have the train go through there city" Our Government knows building a high speed rail system is the ultimate answer to boosting the economy with jobs and infrastructure they just don't care and can't care.
It would be a better answer to our failing economy. we will save more money with this kind of service, with a high speed train there will be more traveling more jobs for people in differents cities and finnaly this country will be greener, Is a good idea
This video doesn't seem to answer the question. It tells us why high speed rail SHOULD exist and why skeptics deny that it should, but it doesn't say why we don't have true high speed rail systems, while places like Japan and France do have them and Japan has had faster rail than th fastest rails in the USA since the 1960s.

The Acela has a top speed of 150 mph. The AVERAGE speed is 85 mph. Big difference.

Yeah...we American will continue to drive until gasoline is 10 USD per gallon, while our vehicle stay around 25 mpg.

Maybe 280 km/h but mph I highly doubt due to the power to weight ratio.

Why not build a VACUUM TRAIN? We have the technology to build it.
