Carpenters' songs were sophisticated, simple, huge in essence. They knew with their music how to touch hearts. And this is my favorit from them.
Thanks karencarpenterfan for posting this. Your video is a pleasure to view, especially for the sound quality. Wonderful tribute for such a magnum opus.
Really? B/c of what happened to Karen, maybe? I find the song very hopeful~~~a young couple putting their dreams and hopes on the line. It's hard to be so brave in light of the fact that over half of marriages fail. So very sad............. But as long as dreamy-eyed folks, both young and older, march up that aisle, this song lives on.
"Lovers and Other Strangers" has always been my favorite "wedding" movie, and this song always said "wedding" to me~~so, the combination is fantastic and I thank you so much for posting!!
I get a kick out of the scared look the best man has when the maid of honor looks at him when the bride and groom are exchanging vows., (yikes!!) How young they all are in this movie. It makes me feel old.
Why is everyone ripping on me! I have seen Streisand in interviews & she is a stuck up snob! Also she did a show on Oprah a few years back & was talking about getting the good side of her face that to me is conceited! I am not saying Streisand isn't a great singer she is,but I just think Karen was better everyone is entitled to their opinion! Plus the fact that I am only 34 & love to listen to great music from the 50's thru the 70's of all kinds shows incredible musical taste I think!!!
A few months ago I had the fortunate opportunity to meet one of the writers of this song, Robb Royer, in Nashville. However, for a very unfortunate reason: the death of Tom Oteri (Cheri's dad.) The Celebration of Tom's life was at Robb's house. But it wasn't until later in the evening that I learned of all of Robb's musical accomplishments, such as this song and being founding member of Bread.
Streisand is not cool anyone that thinks they are better than anyone else needs to get over themselves that is whats wrong with society today no manners,caring,etc.. I am a humble person who is old school just like Karen used to be!!!!!
A Perfect Video everything is so Crystal Clear the Movie as well as the Live Performance!!!!!! It can't get any better as far as Karen she had the best voice ever as far as I'm Concerned I'm only 34 & I have argued with my Parents on this topic my mom likes Streisand but she didn't sing in different Ranges like Karen did from E to C Perfectly no one has or will ever match it!!!! Plus I don't like Streisand because she is full of herself!!!
It might be of interest to you to know that Barbra saw Karen coming out of resturant one night in the early 70's. Anyways Ms. Streisand took a moment to stop Karen and stated. " I just wanted to let you know love.. You have a marvelous intruament.(meaning her voice)" She then walked on.. Karen turned to her date with her eyes wide and stated. " I can't believe that she said that to me.." Karen was awestruck. Her date reminded Karen " Your every bit the singer Barbra was."
what a testimony to Karen Carpenter's genuine modesty. It never even occurred to her that her voice was the best that the world has ever known, far surpassing the admittedly talented Streisand
When this video was shot back in 1971, she was still somewhat healthy. If you search "Touch Me When We're Dancing" or "Beechwood 4-5789", then you'll see how light she became.
Wow... thank you for that personal info on her life and yes, sadder that she never found the one... but she seems too good even for this present world if you know what I mean.
Yes. Sadly, I don't think anyone can ever have the same presence Karen had. Nobody will ever replicate that voice. Her voice was like a lump of clay. As Richard said in a documentary, by 1966 it was "rough around the edges". But, you see, it was moldable. She could change her voice from the sadness of "Superstar" to the happiness of "Top of the World" in an instant. Nobody can ever compare to her.
Yes, Karen did get married in 1980 to a man named Tom Burris. The thing was, their marriage was failing near the end of her life. She was about to finalize her divorce papers the day she died. It's really sad that she never found "the one" and she never had any children.
This is my favorite carpenter song i could listen to it a hundred times and never get tired of it. Absolutely beautiful as always.Karen you were the best.
A simply beautiful voice did Karen have very sweet, rich and clear, she is one in a million, never will there ever be another like. Her legacy lives on in songs like this.
How can anyone not be a Karen Carpenter fan? She always seems to make me cry. I believe she had the finest voice ever. Her voice was so beautiful and she seemed to feel every word she sang. The sad songs make me cry because of her emotion and the other songs make me cry because her voice was so incredible and because we lost a great talent. I could listen to Karen all day long, but it really takes so much out of me.
It would look fine, but I don't have Karen's wedding (sorry!)
Even if I did, the quality wouldn't be that great. As far as I know, not many copies remain of Karen's wedding that are in perfect condition, if any at all.
A very clear recording. I was related to Fred. He thanked them in the Oscar speech...as well he should have.

Great editing job! Now we don't have to wonder how well the Carpenters' version of this song might work with the movie!

Despite being a positive love song, it has such a sad undertone to it, in my opinion.

I know what you mean! All the "parents", with the exception of Cloris Leachman, have now passed away. *sigh*

I can't stop crying.... Although I never saw the movie, this scene touched me so much! As well as Karen's Angelic voice.

How do you know Streisand thinks she's better than everyone else?
karencarpenterfan 3 years ago
Streisand may not be cool, but she was one of the most extraordinary Broadway stars in the history of the Broadway stage. Period.
Right up there with Brice, Jolson and Merman. Okay, maybe not Jolson.
Stick your silly opinions...
What's wrong with society is no respect for tradition.
