I am half chinese and half spanish and I still face discrimination from people in HK. mostly the old people, I guess they are the less educated here.
I have met some nice chinese friends but also some that are just miserable.
Once I went into my building, and there was a woman waiting for the lift, and then me and a pakistan guy were also there waiting, suddenly the chinese woman walked away and let us go inside the lift.
Just because you face discrimination from people doesn't mean that they are "less educated". You're going by western standards. You have to realize that East Asia is a very racially homogenous place. HK's population is 96% Han Chinese so the idea of multiculturalism doesn't really exist there.
Chinese people r treated very poorly oversea (Indo...). Minority in HK r not too bad. But it probably give them a very hard time. Imagine moving to a place where you can't speak their language. I think people from developing countries like Philippine, Malaysia are being look down at by people like us from a more privilege background.
The Chinese people are descriminated against by the Hong Kong people. Its VERY clear to anyone who´s been to the HK. The Mainlanders cant get jobs, they are omitted from descrimination laws, they are treated much like they are in Vancouver...marginalized. Their degrees etc....useless.
Hong Kongers are Chinese people. Mainland people don't get the jobs because of their lack of education and lack of ability to speak Cantonese or English etc. ESF where i use to go to in my secondary school life, hires lots of teachers from Mainland China, because they are educated.
It takes more than a shared passport for people to appreciate one another. People of Cuba have trouble integrating with other latin cultures because of the environment in which they grew up under. The Chinese people can not integrate into HK culture for exactly the same reasons. They are seen as inferior culturaly and socially. If other Hong Kong citizens do that we'll look at them the same way. Once on the I saw a middle aged Hong Konger hopping around in the train like a 5 year old, i looked at him the same way.

there was a documentary about asian culture here in vancouver. it followed a 7 or 8 yr old girl to vancouver and then follows her return to mainland china to visit her cousins she had known. she couldnt connect with them and cried on tv...she described them having traits of 6 or 7 yr old girls and nothing like the girls their age back home in vancouver or even hong kong.

The reason why Hong Kong does not allow Philipino or Indonesian etc domestic worker IS NOT RACISM. But this is often MISTAKEN BY PEOPLE.

I am half chinese and half spanish and I still face discrimination from people in HK. mostly the old people, I guess they are the less educated here.
I have met some nice chinese friends but also some that are just miserable.
Once I went into my building, and there was a woman waiting for the lift, and then me and a pakistan guy were also there waiting, suddenly the chinese woman walked away and let us go inside the lift.
That´s a very bad behaviour.

Just because you face discrimination from people doesn't mean that they are "less educated". You're going by western standards. You have to realize that East Asia is a very racially homogenous place. HK's population is 96% Han Chinese so the idea of multiculturalism doesn't really exist there.

It takes more than a shared passport for people to appreciate one another. People of Cuba have trouble integrating with other latin cultures because of the environment in which they grew up under. The Chinese people can not integrate into HK culture for exactly the same reasons. They are seen as inferior culturaly and socially. Rubbing their bare feets in public, having five or more sitting on those three person seats on trains etc. But that's not discrimination. Hong Kongers aren't racist to mainlanders, if they are they are racist to themselves. A lot of large Hong Kong industries was settled when the rich capitalists escaped from communism in mainland China into Hong Kong in 1949. Hong Kongers don't hire Mainlanders because of their lack of education, or lack of Cantonese/English speaking abilities. That's the same for all people around Hong Kong. But there are organisations who purposely hire these people.

Also, the first flag of The Republic of The Philippines was sewn in HK by Marcela Agoncillo who lived in Wan Chai back in the late 1800s.
Alot of the prominent leaders of The Philippines were exiled in HK during the Philippine Revolution. Ever heard of the Hong Kong Junta? Also, HK served as a base for the Philippine Central Commitee during the Filipino-American war!

They say they're just common words to call a white person. Apparently most people call black people haak yahn (black person) now. While in USA I see Chinese people discriminated against every other day by ignorant people. While in HK I get discriminated against because I'm the minority there (I'm white). In my view these types people are in every country in the world. Using stereotypes that label one race as stupid or ignorant is not right.
