  • Wow Thomas is like.... waay off for the whole intro part. I know this old now and all but wow. Just too much all over the place.

  • j'aurais capoté, c'est sur

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, what in the balls happened at the beginning? Still, outrageously awesome performance, I would probably become homosexual for Omar. Just saying.

  • the thing with volta (unlike other rock acts) is that its all about moderation and balance. not too much of the same thing and that dosen't seem to suit pridgen as much although as a drummer he is awesome

  • pridgen has no dynamics. he's fucking full throttle all the time haha. jon is still by far my favorite. i hope the new dude is a happy medium.

  • thomas pridgen tore this track up fav drummer shame hes gone nobody can bring the x factor like prdigen and dave elitich has alot to prove on there new album thats if hes gonna stay or they except him until then dave elitich is playing nothing of pridgens material cause he cant replicate it.

  • agreed the drums are seem overpowered. oh well he not the drummer anymore

  • prefer jon theodore by a mile, pridgen just over does it for me

  • jon doesnt give a fuck about you or marsvolta so get off his dick its been how long

  • know jon well do ya? Thats my opinion mate. If you don't like it, then fuck off.

  • good comment no wonder your people are nobodys

  • Learn to punctuate.

  • why would i waste my time on punctuating with you? think hardly about that really hard

  • It would just help me to understand what you are trying to say. Your english is terrible enough without me having to deal with your inability to punctuate, it just leads me to believe your are either a child, a mexican or a fucking retard as I can't even comprehend half of what you say. However, it would probably take you less time to punctuate your comments than it would to reply to me and im sure that time would be better spent on 2nd Life or playing Warhammer or something. Jog on.

  • your from england mars volta are latinos your smart comment is now made you look stupid? like i said i dont waste time on punctuating let alone spell check its a fukin website not a term paper. i have no clue as what you mean with 2nd life playing warhammer as im american and have a life as like you who dedicates to playing games and spell chekcing on you tube. good job and i hope to never see you at a mars volta concert as they are mexican and latino who you dislike clearly brits are genious!

  • Nice pressumption, but unfortunately for you "England" doesn't form the entire United Kingdom and I am actually from Scotland, and I know the Mars Volta are Latinos, whats your fucking point? I am not asking you to spell check or correct your grammar all the time. I was simply saying that because your written English is so poor, the occassional comma might allow me to understand what you are trying to say.inbred, "Brit hating" mexicans.

  • Why wuold I travel to Mexico to see them anyway? Thanks to modern technology, you might be surprised to learn that the mars volta, have , from time to time, actually played outside the states! Crazy I know, but true all the same. That means, I will probably never have the displeasure of having to share the same venue with a bunch of stinking degenerat

  • it just leads me to believe your are either a child, a mexican or a fucking retard as I can't even comprehend half of what you say. this is your idiotic comment referring to mexicans? then you say you know mars volta are mexicans? how does that connec tin any way? Dont come to mars volta videos to start shit or any video it seems everytime a fat mouth is open its piece of trash village living euro sack of shit? Do us all a favor and stop listening to mars volta cause clearly mexicans are dirty.

  • Firstly I didn't say they were Mexicans, I said they were Latino. Meaning they are of Latino decent. Omar was is Puerto Rican and Cedric was born in California, so try and get your facts straight. I have nothing against Mexicans personally I was simply mocking your bad English.

  • And if you care to try and force your piece sub-human brain to think back to my first comment, you may recal I wasn't the one starting shit on this video, I was merely stating my opinion of the new drummer. It took you, a dirty little, shit for brains, (most likely) Mexican cunt to come along and start hurling abuse at me. Therefore, I suggest you fuck off , get yourself a woman if you can and learn to chill the fuck out.

  • Also, for your information I don't live in a "trash euro village" . I'm not even sure if there are any trash villages in Europe, although I wouldn't expect you to even know that as presumably you are like the majority of obese americans who haven't even left the states and don't even own a fucking passport. I live in the proud city of Glasgow, Scotland, that has created more talent in the last 50 years than the whole of America has in its entire lifespan.

  • please stfu re read every fuking comment on this mars volta page that your dumb ass has typed cause clearly you have no clue what you type. that mouth of yours is gonna get you in trouble KID.

  • Seeing Them Today.!!!!!!!!!

  • i will be honest i sounds so much crazy and hpynotizing with pridgen thats why he is my favorite its a real shame

  • @ultimatefighter187 Pridgen for me ruins this song. Especially the slow (well used to be slow) horn part when Jon played it.

  • jon never played it . blake flemming did

  • @mildew2yahoo Refer to the Amputechture album. That's Jon playing it.

  • Λατρεύω αυτό το συγκρότημα τόσο πολύ που είναι τόσο καλή μου αρέσει ηv mars volta

  • Does it matter, they're both out now.

  • really? and who's their drummer now?

  • Dave Elitch is the current drummer on the european leg of the Octahedron tour, though it is not certain if he is a permanent member.

  • are there on youtube videos of this dave elitch?

some says that he uses doublebass pedal, it's a pity!

  • Yeup thats why i say tpridge needs to listen. Jon Theodores playing was more fluid and consistent.

  • OMG TPridge is everywhere but there....hes playin like he is on a gospel chop vid. its cool an-all but this is mystical music that needs taste as well as kick-ass drum licks. but some nights your on and some your off when you do 150 shows plus.....

  • TPridge needs to slow down and listen.....check out FUTUREband their drummer is sick.!!!

  • Every guitarist who dreams of an applauding crowd someday in their future has their own guitar idol. Omar Rodriguez-Lopez is arguably one of the greatest guitarists of our time. I judge a guitarists greatness by their innovation, not necessarily their skill, although Omar has both. His music sends me spiraling into another world every time I listen to it, and no one could ever hope to compare their own music to what he has created. Keep rocking, Omar, you'll be in the hall of fame someday

  • absolutley correct, hes one of, if not the, greatest guitarists of our age

  • yo i heard the mars volta is kicking out pridgen and making me their new drummer

  • 0:56-0:57 a must watch

  • amazing band

  • Thomas over drums listen to tmv there whole sound is overdone if you don't

like it then simplify your music listen

to some simple folk country music or somthing

  • omar is a fucking god!!!! greatest human being to pick up a gutiar in the last 20 years

  • OH MY GOD SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT WHO WAS THE BEST DRUMMER! Seriously, just please shut it. The past is the past it cant be changed. Both drummers are really, really good.

  • ok look i dont think its fair to ri[ on pridgen like that, he is an amazing drummer with an obviously different style, change isn't always bad. besides this version of tetragrammaton sounds epic. i loooove it! :) its so awesome!

  • okay....first of all the intro to this video is a prime example of how thomas should just stick to gospel drumming where you can do whatever you want all the time. the mars volta is more about groove and less about chops, which thomas doesnt understand. jon brought groove that couldnt be touched. even if he isnt coming back, i still think hes the perfect fit when it comes to a drummer.

  • Yes because we all know taking the time to play a little ride cymbal bell is "chopping out" *rolls eyes*

If you knew anything about gospel drumming you'd know that it is centered around a perpetual groove that flows through the fills when they come around. You've been watching too many gospel chops videos, listen to some actual gospel music sometime. I don't get why it's so hard to see that both Theodore and Thomas have a very similar drumming style.

  • if you think they're similar then you have it completely wrong. i'm not even going to try and explain it to you.

  • Because you can't I suppose. They have their obvious differences but overall they both play with a heavy latin/afro-cuban feel, Thomas just lays on a little more Gospel/Jazz style fills. It's not like Theodore was a stranger to that either.

I'm not saying you're suggesting this but it's very ignorant to say they are completely different. Throw Mike Portnoy or Thomas Lang in TMV and tell me Pridgen sticks out that bad.

  • who cares thomas is out of the mars volta now anyways shit. thats why they dont play this song live anymore. thomas fucks up the beginning look at omar shake his head staring right at thomas after then intro.

  • Since when? Who's the drummer now? I thought they don't play it because they don't have Adrian and Paul anymore, same deal as Baphomets.

  • mannnn check out the forums dude this shit has been going on since last week

  • it because he was throwing them off tempo, he was moving WAY too fast for omar to play. notice where it goes to just omar playing, before the verse, hes playing it 2x as fast as he was in the recording.

  • ive always thought that a band shouldnt depend on a drummer to keep the time, they should be able to play their parts regardless of whats going on with another instrument. it allows some creativity to come in from a different aspect of the band. call me crazy but i think thomas was the amazing for this band. pridgen, theodore, now elitch (still waiting to see what he'll bring to the table). as far as im concerned all great. but ill definitely miss pridgen

  • @benderminguez Well that's kind of what they were doing. Everyone was going at the correct tempo on their own and Pridgen just kind of went off tempo there for a bit. I'm not bagging on him or anything, I think he's excellent, but he's human. He's perfectly capable of making mistakes.

  • I think Cedric should go on drums just so everyone will shut up about this Pridgen/Theodore debate.

Everyone has their preferences, yeah. But it's getting old. How long ago did Theodore leave again?

  • no one can judge thomas until you see the mars with him live. i saw them with jon and i just saw them with thomas 3 days ago. Yah jon was great but hes gonee! not coming back! so please people get used to pridgen. And when i saw them in philly with thomas he played amazingly. all the songs he played were amazing. old ones and new ones. Hes especially gotten better playing songs from deloused. hes getting the feel. and he killed it on eunuch provocateur absolutely amazing. the whole band is.

  • Did you see them in Baltimore? He kinda fucked up Drunkship though lol... you gotta admit. Other than that I agree with you.

    Nice Volta jams btw. Subbed.

  • i was there too. it was a great show. thomas lacks nothing

  • Sorry to keep on ranting but Jon also did make ppl dance (IMHO) with Days Of Baphomets and Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus also Inertiatic ESP. And with Tom...only song I can dance to is Ouroborous...and alittle bit of Aberinkula. but to me tho. So I'm pretty much more of a fan of Jon than Tom....sorry!

  • Can't can't give my opinion cuz I first got into L'Via L'Viaquez then The Widow...well basically I got into songs when Jon was in the band. I can't explain it man but every song I heard with Jon in it was different from other bands. But I when I got BIG i just didn't sink into it right away ya know nor Octahedron it took some time! But their old stuff is way better than what they are doing now. No offense to fans of Tom but Jon to me actually makes you dance! Like Drunkship Of Lanterns :3

  • Jon's contribution to Mars Volta was MUCH more appropriate in my opinion...maybe not for what Omar is trying to do overall but I think many would agree in saying Jon's drumming was much more genius because he tailor-composed drum patterns that catered much better to the overall compositions whereas Pridgen just writes insane beats that are difficult and pretty cool but it seems that his focus is on how many beats he can cram into a measure

  • ive always said jons drumming blended in with the music to make each song more wholesome and everybody thinks thomas is good just cause he is fast. i get soo much shit for it. thomas is NOT a "beast". half of the stuff he does doesnt even sound good. now Zach Hill is an example of technical fast drumming(what pridgen tries to do)

  • perfectly stated man. Zach and Tom are friends so maybe he'll teach him a thing or two.

  • if pridgen wasnt up to scratch he wouldnt be in the mars volta, end of

  • yeah dude but you gotta think pridgen wouldnt be in the band if they didnt think he was good enough.

he was also the youngest guy ever to be let into berkelee and receive a master in his instrument.

so he has to be doing something right

  • yea I like Pridgen...I'm a drummer and he's definateley one of the masters of the instrument buuuuuuuuuut he for sure overdrum's on most of his performances both album and live...I guess thats obviously the sound they're going for now but they're post amputechture music has completely lost the magic and the vibe of the older stuff. "Llyena" fuckin rocks though...Goliath is pretty good and Wax Simrulca kinda grew on me

  • they say, fuck! last song.. lets rip it off!!! xD

  • the only thing im worried about is these guys are gunna develope high blood pressure or get heartattacks at a young age cuz ther music is so highstrung

  • quit crying over the drumming change... for goodness sake is been over 2 years... just enjoy the greatness that is the mars volta.. reading all of these comments its like a bunch of 5 year olds arguing about which ice cream flavor they like better... just enjoy the ice-cream!

  • Enjoy the greatness of the Mars Volta? Listening to their latest stuff, I wouldn't even put it under that name.

  • I disagree. I think it's amazing. It's just Omar's songs in their simplest form.

  • 0.57 classic its like he love cedric till he wants to eat em up

  • jon was holding omar back of what he was trying to accomplish. that's why he got pridgen to take his place. and that's not me just saying that, i read an interview with omar and that's basically exactly what he said about pridgen taking theodore's place. theodore's gone; get over it. pridgen is here to stay (hopefully for a long time).

  • yeeah, as u can see omar gets exited every time he looks thomas. so that wut he was looking for, the way thomas play drums and his energy n the music

  • i take back every mean words i said abt this band but the drummer change my mind so im back to hate them but i love this song yeah gonna get the album

  • where can i download this FULL performance in a good quality?????

  • utorrent if you have experience with it, I found this whole show in DVD quality there.

  • Jon Theodore was apparently an asshole, whereas Pridgen always brings a positive energy to the table.

Also, Pridgen's just plain a better drummer.

Have fun wanking around with Zack de la Rocha, Jon.

  • Pridgen is good, but he really "overdrums" in this performance. The intro...

  • god i hate to say it but cedric's singing in this video makes me cringe. i hope that his throat was just sore this performance

  • Cedric is starting to lose his voice on the falsettos. It happened to Robert Plant.....quicker.

  • Yes. It sounds like he's struggling and barely getting his voice high enough to sing the chorus 2:27 .

  • Could just be a bad singing day. Happens to the best of 'em.

  • I hope you are right. I am seeing them in October.

  • so am i...have to get my mind and body right

  • I think he's still got it. I saw em live a couple weeks ago and he sung inertiatic esp just as high and clear as on deloused.

  • Pridgen has more skill than Theodore overall, but Theodore had a certain groove that added to the music more than Pridgen I think. Theodore had a lot of skill too, I appreciate them both for what they do for the band.

  • pridgen and theodore contest is over. jon is gone. thomas is here to stay (for a while hopefully). I liked Jon better. but do you guys like jon because you liked the albums he played on better? That is my case. I fucking love prodgen though.

I just like the mars volta :))

  • Clever analyse ! I just agree...

Mars Volta is and will be The Mars volta whatever the performers (except... Omar) as it used to be in bands like King Crimson. But beyond the music, i just miss Jon for his amazing playing.

  • 2.47 great fill! damn awesome drummer

    great band!

  • they did mean to mess uo!! they did the same ting on their concert in norway!

  • nice kaosspad work there :P

  • me too but Jon Theodore moved on toild international and decided to do other things (but i do say i like both drummers and there drumming) but honestly i dont think one is better than other.i dont compare those things like "whos better" but if the rest of TMV is happy with it thenits meant to be... but i do recall thomas pridgen won the guitar center drum off when he was 9...

  • I disagree. What thomas pridgen plays is absolutely not more complicated than what jon theodore plays. Jon theodore played to each phrase and riff, accentuating what was already there. thomas pridgen wants everyone to play to him. Bedlam in goliath was just a huge drum solo, most of those songs in boring ass 4/4 time. Theodore played mostly rudiments which are far more complex (and superior) to pridgens' gospel triplets.

Thomas Pridgen is fast, but Jon Theodore made better beats.

  • haha, firstly there is no escaping that thomas pridgen's drumming is much harder to do and it fits the music much better...this coming from a guitarist not a drummer...the music calls for drums that do dominate the music with the melody.

there is alot of 4/4 rhythms, but he does not at all stick to this in regards to emphasis which is really where the time signature lies in music.

ofcourse, this is just my opinion...but i recon pretty valid. Im glad Pridgen has become the official drummer.

  • After hearing the new album, and accessing the old one, surely you understand that he played as Omar asked him to play. If you've heard other contributions that Pridgen has made to other artists, you'd understand that Pridgen is a very well rounded drummer and knows what to play for certain moments. As far as rudiments, Theodore just cycled para diddles and was very lack luster in jams and improvisations

  • I can't believe people are still on this. That was over a long time ago.

  • Damn! Hear Omar bend that string at 4:52!

    What a performance!

  • Thank you for this upload!!!!

  • Camera work: the only thing more schizoidal than t

  • Comment removed

  • Thomas was off on da intro at the end... HE STILL KILLED I THO!!

  • rofl i just heard a severe mess up on their part during the intro.

  • They recovered it nicely though.

  • The point of playing live to them is to alter it so it can be it's own variation but yes they did mess up or did they mean to mess up?

  • nah. its just a thought.

  • As much as i love Pridgen, Theodore plays the intro way better!

  • Yeah, I think Thomas plays Roulette Dares better though. He adds so many extra fills that fuel the fire so to speak.

  • John theodore invented the intro though. It's always harder to cover things than play something you made.

  • omar writes the score.

  • he doesn't do the drum tracks, and never will

he said that in an interview when asked about how much the whole band contributes

  • no he doesnt

cedric wrote the drum tracks in the first one john in the second.....
