This Thursday (3rd March) Rory Stewart MP will be hammering it out with David Aaronovich over the pros and cons of foreign intervention for Intelligence Squared: should we let the bad guys be? Visit our website to buy tickets.
once i was stranded in the jungle and had to walk an entire cold as fuck night to get out. I thought myself so cool then, so bear grylls. Then I read Rory's story of walking and knew I was shit. He is the man
I m impressed by depth of his insight into Afghan culture and politics and all western leaders must listen to his realistic advices on should be done in Afghanistan. I admire his strong personality Ahmad, Kabul

i can hardly believe he's standing as an MP. its a really odd choice, even though what he does IS political. for instance, i don't see how you embed yourself in international affairs, like he's done apparently in kabul, when your opposite numbers are constantly getting de-elected.
I am amazed I hadn't noticed Rory before; I thought I was paying attention to world affairs. His idol is Laurence of Arabia and he certainly is on a par with him. Top 10 best seller in the US and the UK only in the boring litrature pages!
I have listened to his peeches, seen him talk on prime time news channels, hism book and news pappers. Rory knows Afghanistan and Afghan people better then anyone I know of in the western world, both the military and Political elite Need his advise and input to be realistic and succeed. He has done so much good for the people and country of Afghanistan and is well respected there.
My point kind of was that British Politics is so flawed right now that it would be better to have guys like Rory to work outside of the 24/7 pointless cycle of parliament.
Think about how ridiculous PMQ's are-do we want to waste the talent of Rory Stewart waving paper at guys like Gordan Brown or actually doing things.
will he promise not too be a stooge for the rothchild chatham house brigade.
another suited country life twat working for the bankers.
watch this space this guy has been groomed molded and shaped using the same tools that made cameron and that dick clegg who seems too want a war with iran.
Rory! Seems that he is just another doing the Correct thing. People like him, are few in this world. He keep things together, and realistic. Back home, in all elements of Government, are playing their
fiddles while Blighty burns. No Government Ministers, will ever be famous in the Divine. It is the Rory's of this world, which makes this Nation Great. Not a hundred boatloads of Prime Ministers, are worth even one Rory Stewart. It is men like he, whom are the real backbone of our Nation.
Agreed on most points. Though I think exploring (pun intended) Thesiger's disillusionment with "The West" or more "civilized society" might be interesting to you. (See "Arabian Sands" or "The Marsh Arabs") His thoughts are well documented and can help explain his keen interest in unexplored areas. I'm perhaps more knowledgeable about Thesiger (than Stewart) as I'm currently producing a documentary about him.
Okay, loosely described. I'd buy that. The differences in my mind are that Thesiger was an explorer. He was also completely disillusioned with his own culture so spent time in other "less developed" regions. Rory Stewart is interested in diplomacy, infrastructure, nation building - Thesiger would have not been interested in these questions.
wow this guy is pretty brilliant!! it's really admirable. really a force of good in this world. We need more of such honest and brilliant people even in western countries, for managing banks and doing finance honestly and properly for example!!
All of us Westerners should be forced to read his books before they comment on the current state of certian regions of the Middle East. I'm just sayin...Rory is a brilliant individual.
Amazing man. Thank god there is someone like this is the world, and right in the thick of it as well. People need to listen to him, Generals and Politians need to listen to him.
Prince of the Marshes is better... what he needs to do is start introducing a bit more pieces of his romantic life into his tales... a bit more adventure... his photographic memory is so detailed in his books that it can become overwhelming sometimes... and a bit stale
Rory was at my University in Alaska a few weeks ago...he has practical insight that I think most politicians lack severely. I remember him saying that if the US pulled out, he thinks they will work things out for themselves. He said something to the effect of "Iraqis are much more canny when it comes to local and regonal politics than the current western occupiers." People should listen to this guy.
Thank you, Rory. Listened to you on Radio 4 the other day and thought you were great. Thank you for doing those jobs that the rest of us are too shallow to do...
-Cont.- He is truly one of the pride of Great-Britain, and a good example why a small European island was able to accomplish with 18-19 cent. technology, where the US is only piling-up one miserable failure after another. Looks like brutal, unarticulated brawn is still no substitute for a missing brain and heart.
A brilliant but also an honest and respectful person, who is capable to act as a bridge even in our tense time of an stoked-up and avoidable civilisational conflict between the West, and various Middle-Eastern cultures deemed 'exotic'. -Cont.-
Rory's the best historian of the Millennium. Fascinating Guy. But the best part of his testimony is his description of the Average Afghan's Working Day. It was not as affected as the rest of his testimony. That is the problem with Television-Screen Interviews, they never have the authenticity of the moment. Rory should leave theater to the performers, but hes got more intelligence and experience than the USGov.

He reminds me of Wilfred Thesiger. Only the British produce men such as this.

Yes! This is a man of precisely the sort of caliber that we need to be running our country. Westminster needs integrity and intelligence.

Seriously Rory Stewart is an inspiration pure and simple.
He leads such an amazing life but it is one of trying to do good.
Rory do not lower yourself to British Politics other people in the world could do with your mind not us brits.
Seriously an amazing individual who's life and talents I will flatly admit I envy and hope to emulate.

Surely he is exactly the sort of person we need in parliament, or do you think the Brits only deserve the sort of rogues we have at present?
