It is indeed a sign of a world on it's last legs when homosexuality is so readily expectable that we post it on such places and people comment like it is the most normal thing. Like all societies that have long since passed on, the decadence reflected in its free thinking and open sexuality is a mark of its end, I believe we are just about there.

Is it me, or did Ellen look REALLY uncomfortable when k.d. hugged her? Was she still bothered by that kiss k.d. forced on her when she was still in the closet?

Women's sexuality is much more fluid than men's. Labels are often just irrelevant, and more suited to male behaviour. people have urges and desires, and make choices, these things are not set in concrete and limited by a word. If you're a man, you won't understand, that's OK, we're just different.
@oopsydahlia There is another element with Heche though that's a problem within all communities - psychological disablility, probably bipolar disorder. It's debilitating and embarassing for the sufferer and very challenging for those close to her. I think the character of Jenny in TLW had elements of the disorder as well.
