We have people like that in the UK called 'Rag and Bone Men'. They're most often gypsies (travellers) making their living selling the scrap from old furniture and appliances. I've never seen a woman doing the job over here, though, hence why we call them 'men'. They can frequently be heard yelling 'RAGBONE!' ad nausium down every street.
Interesting cultural difference, I suppose, as it appears to be more of a formalised business venture in Japan, whereas in the UK, it's people's livelihoods.
We get people like that here in the UK, They only take things made of metal and some electicals. They take them to a scrap merchant who pays them by weight and type of metal. Around £350 per tonne for steel and £2000 for copper !
In Finland you would have the police on your tail for making noise 0.0
If you have heavy stuff you call the recycling yard to collect it, if its light you bring it to the recycling yard, but that concept is pretty new, people where not able to buy enough stuff to have something to throw away, old stuff was recycled by do it yourself into new stuff!
Youre not kidding, it's an issue. My boyfriend broke his case in Japan, so he he bought a new one and asked the receptionist where he could dispose of the old one. She looked at him like he had dropped from Mars. So, we phoned the embassy who called the hotel receptionist to tell them to charge us a tenner, to get rid of it for us. The receptionist couldn't have told us that!?
can´t see anything special about that .. its just a metal collector. you can sell crap metal fr a fortune these days ... apart from that lorry being pretty small ... maybe they don´t expect too many people to make use of it?
In America the city that i live in drops at least 15 giant metal bins for every residential neighborhood every year on May 10th, to get rid of things like old TV's old washers, refrigerators, matresses anything you want to throw away, then after 4 days they pick up the bins seperate all the metals and plastics for recycle, all woods get recycled aswell 'they turn it into fiber board and card board' so having to pay a fee to get rid of an old washer is abit weird for me atleast.
This doesn't seem like the discrete Japanese way to do stuff like this. I would think that at least they would make like a public list....like Craige's List...for all people's free/ unwanted items for others to pick up.
Interesting. I think the best advice is don't bring anything to Japan that you'd want to get rid of later on. Just stuff that is durable and valuable. As far as garbage goes, just throw it in the trash or waste dump. Don't litter. As the saying goes "don't just respect the people but respect the land."
In Australia we have 'Council Pick-up' twice a year where people can leave their junk on their front lawns to be picked up by the council over a few days. It's funny to see most of your stuff being taken by strangers instead! And of course, seeing things on a neighbour's lawn that were on yours the year before! :D
I had to buy 20 years old television from my friend with 20 dollars in america.now you have to pay 15000 yen to get rid of your old computer in each city of tokyo.15000 yen?imagine,1 euro is about 130 yen,1 us dollars goes to 90 yen at the moment.
Yeah, before I got my car I used to walk past a Nissan that would have only been about 8 years old and was in pretty good condition.. but it had been abandoned in a carpark..
of course, nobody stripped or stole it.. so it just sat there teasing me during my long walks!
we have them here in the UK but they only take scrap metal, irons, washing machines and microwaves etc. stuff they can weigh to get paid to get rid of
Here we have town rubbish pick-up and a dump permit. They don't collect quite a list of things on the town trucks. I have to either haul things to the dump or have them removedfor a fee and so they sit there. Oh, let me tell you, I would want this crew to make a regular stop at my house every week.
This used to happens loads in England. There is even an old black and white comedy series called Steptoe & Son where the two main characters were 'rag and bone men' :)
this is a bit like having a "rag and bone man" in england...they are very rare, they were most common in the victoria times but i remember one coming down our street about 15years ago
we have that in mexico...but they only want metal stuff like aluminium so they can sell it to the junk yard...lol...that van looks like the one that delivers water home by home....nice vid...
Of course I don't understand one word of it, but the sound of the woman's voice remindes me of the one in the submarine. They always sound so sweet and more like they're talking to children.
I would have expected a male voice when it comes to asking for old stuff to get rid off.
Do they always use female voices for those (I don't know what they're called - these voice-overs in shops and stuff)?
if your neighbor in Japan wanted to do that to , lets say a tv, can you ask them "May i obtain this television from you? I really like it and i'd feel bad if you threw it away."
Where there's muck, there's brass !:)
There's a guy down the road from me that does this, can be quite lucrative.
