I think that they wanted to make it distant from the TV show. Yes, both are Mission Impossible but I read somewhere that they kind of wanted to go with a fresh start where Phelps didn't have too strong of a history with IMF.

Well I've never seen the old ones, so I couldn't compare. But I do notice that 90% of the time American remakes suck, so I'll go with Abomination.
