I'm not a Native American, but I am a hunter. I've never killed a buffalo, but I kill deer and rabbits. I get alot of flack about prefering to kill my food. When I try to get it across that I love the deer and rabbits, non hunting people just don't understand. Keep hunting what was put on this earth for the Nez Perce to hunt. This is deeper than just killing. And these activists don't understand that. I appreciate what yall do. Maybe for my grad present, Ill get to kill a buffalo myself. :)

I grew up on the Nez Perce Rez and I am Makah, my brother was on that canoe when it was harpooned in 1999.

I would imagine that returning to the diet that their people ate for generations would be an improvement for the health of the Nez Perce people. I don't think he's saying that bison meat prevents or cures diabetes, but that it should be substituted for the starchy, sugary foods that are killing his people.
I see that not eating starchy, sugary foods would beneficial. It's killing people of all sorts. I have wanted to learn more about the Nez Perce and perhaps I could start with their diet. I know, however, that some tribes would eat pounds and pounds of meat at a time and then eat nothing until the next kill. So it would have been interesting if he had included more info. Also, are they going to ride mustangs and kill with arrows? I assume that exercise was part of what made the men healthy.
to eightbore1971, not all tribes hunted the way you think. that mainly was due to the fact we didn't have the horse yet, but when we did we started hunting for them sigular, next we are taught from our elders as we grow up. that is the way it was done before settlers and that is how this guy was raised as well. he is credible because of his experiance with people like you and other people that get into our way of life.

He knows about his culture and history because he didn't cross the ocean to live in Ireland like your ancestors did when they came to America. BFC isn't slaughtering them for food. They're doing it to appease the Montana cattlemen who are the ones with sick cows because they inject them with synthetic hormones, put them on feedlots and give them food made partially from other cows, food with pesticide residue on it, over vaccinate their cattle, and overgraze the land.
Even if all the buffalo were gone or confined to national parks, domestic cattle would still have brucellosis. Buffalo are the product of natural selection, and pure food and water.
Let the Indians hunt the buffalo. They won't slaughter them just for hides or tongues like the corrupt white buffalo hunters and tourists did in the 19th Century that was backed by the corrupt government so they could take over the land. Once they took over, entire species became extinct and just they polluted the land, air and water.

Everyone should have the right and opportunity to hunt. Hunting isn't just an American Indian heritage, its a heritage shared by nearly every culture.
While a lot has been done, more must be done to preserve land away from development. Furthermore, the radical animal activist need to stop demanding "cute" animals from being hunted. Doesn't matter if its a buffalo or a turkey.... what matters is sustainable hunting.
What also matters is that our plains and grasslands are in dire need of their keystone species and the most essential one is the American Bison so stop feigning a superior knowledge base. If you had one, you would already know this.
As a biologist, I find it somewhat troubling that your labeling buffalo a keystone species. Already, the ecosystems have adapted without them. Furthermore, its difficult to imagine buffalo returning to their once large numbers; the fact is, Native Americans created and controlled their habitat (much like today's agriculture practices to ensure high yields).
If you want large grass lands, burning land would produce the ideal results (instead of introducing tons of Buffalo).

The natives are the only ones who should be allowed to hunt, they at least have an idea of what they are doing.
