Lovely video,i agree totaally understaed and my fav, niceto see geraint watkins, mickey gee r.i.p,dick bland and john david (the bass man who i did my last recordings with)and excellent producer and of course John irish earle r.i.p....these guys never reached the acclaim they deserved....in my eyes gods of rock n roll music:)
Righteous.....Saw him at Toad's Place in New Haven, Connecticut, still the greatest rock n roll club in America, in September of 1982, He performed this, along with "Run Run Rudolph"... A great rock n roller.
I have to say I love this song. Bruce does a great job too. I dont know if this irks you, but in this video, the first guy, on the left and closest to the stage, during the whole video, cant even clap his hands to this song, I dont know about the rest of you, but he should have just stayed at home eating Doritos. How can you sit there and not have one part of your body not react to this song????. Great job Dave. You never got the recognition you really deserved.
Listen to the original version by Bruce on Tracks - Edmunds voice, and band, sound thin and wimpy compared to Springsteen and the E Streeters. Really, check it out.
@sawmillslim SAWMILLSLIM is a typical Liberal HYPOCRITE, Who cares if the Edmunds band dumps the sewage from their bus in fresh water systems? Right Sawmill? Edmunds is just another Limo Liberal elitist with koolaide drinking pinheads like sawmill as his followers....you're a pathetic joke.
@birdmanofbooze Lol... you've confused Dave Edmunds with Dave Matthews, which is a bit like mistaking Barry Manilow for Barry White. Thanks for playing.
@bonoholic It all depends which version you heard first. I'm a big Bruce fan(since mid 70's) but I heard Dave Edmunds first, before many people knew Bruce wrote it, and although I like the Bruce version, I would say many non Bruce fans like Dave's a little better - most radical Bruce fans thinks the Boss does the best of everything and although I really like him, I can't always say that - most of the times yes, but not all of the times. :-)
Written by Bruce Springsteen and brought to music by Dave Edmunds. this was an instant classic when it came out around 1980 and sounds as good as ever.
Dave makes you want to run out and buy a gibson 335 and rock till your fingers bleed, he is the business, the essence of rock n roll, the real rockabilly boy, go dave!
In my opinion I like Bruce's version more. I like Bruce's voice more on this song and I think overall too. Contrary to what people say on here about Bruce not being able to sing, I think he puts so much into his singing and performances, even on some more fun songs like this one. People like Bruce, Neil Young, Bob Dylan who don't have traditionally great voices, I think have great voices because of how passionate they are in their vocals.
Super video...love dave, and i actullay knew four of the musiciains here...mickey g r.i.p,irish earl on sax rip, worked recently with John david on bass and dick on horns.Rock on:)))
Yeah BUT this song does not define Edmund's career, not even close. Springsteen should be thankin Dave for singing it, cause Springsteen can't sing for shit.
@Rightsideup Springsteen cant sing ..poor you..he only had the biggest tours ever for the last 30 years..he only had every cd debut at #1 for the last 25 years..i feel sorry for you..go watch a skid row video you loser and leave rock and roll to us!!
@jeffbebe6 Boy you really told me! It must suck to be hugged up to Bruce Springsteen's nuts. Keep drinkin the Kool Aid kid, Bruce is all hype and is lucky to know the people he knows.
@Rightsideup - Bruce knows the people he knows because he worked his butt off to get where he is. Obviously you don't like his singing, but apparently there are a few fans who do like his voice. Chill out.
Back in the '80s, I was able to contact Dave and tell him about a bunch of rare 78's I owned which I had to get rid of. A meeting was arranged when he played nearby. I told him he could have the records free if I could be on the guest list when he played in my area. Dave happily agreed, and true to his word, when he came around, I watched the show from backstage. A real gentleman, a genuinely nice guy, and one of the all-time great rockers (and producers).
Oh yes, he is a class act. I got backstage in 1982 at the Hollywood Palladium and met him there and he was very gracious (and funnier than hell). He remains one of my all time favofrites as a musician and a person.
if anyone asks you to define rock and roll, just play this for them. thanks to bruce for writing the song, and to dave for doing the definitive version. thanks for posting.
@skontch1 There was an old HBO show with Carl Perkins called Boppin the Blues: Dave Edmunds, drummer and bassist for Stray Sats, George Harrison and others, Awesome
@JCfromDC2 ...thx for turning me on to boppin the blues..been you tuben some of the cuts...great stuff....never heard that dave edmunds didn't like his fans...that's ok, just want to listen to his music, not have a beer with him...
Right on, Skeeb. Dave Edmunds is one of the greatest Rock N' Rollers of all time. I listen to him all the time and always will. This is from the album DE7. Get It. :)
@movesnreno you are sooooooooo right. Caught this act - ala Rockpile - 3 times in the 80's, and each time was better than the last. Check out "Sweet Little Lisa" from Repeat When Necessary, feat. Albert Lee. Unreal. If country always sounded this good, I would be listening to it 24-7!
Dave Edmunds did Bruce Springsteen a favor by recording this. There's more passion and love for rock and roll in this three minutes and thirty four seconds of Dave Edmunds than in whatever you think the five best Springsteen songs are. The world is not smart enough to discover and cherish anything other than what it is handed and that is why Springsteen sings at the Super Bowl and we have to ask what Dave Edmunds is doing today. "It's sad, but it's true..."
Fantastic tune , however when i bought the album DE 7 i recieved a free single with it..."From small things big things come" Probably the reason it never charted.
One of the best nights of my life was seeing this band at Big Man's West in Red Bank NJ 1982,with Clarance Clemmens bartending(It was his bar) and Bruce hanging in the wings waiting to get up and play this song(witch he wrote). What a GREAT night. The Dave Edmunds Band was smoking hot!!
Really amazing! You can never tell whether DE is miming to his track or playing live. He has this mazing uniquity of sounding the same live as he does on record. Now that's amazing production.. I wonder who produced all his records.... and King Kurt... and Stray Cats... and ahhh - he's a FANTASTIC producer.
Springsteen opened the Cardiff 2008 concert with this one! Nice touch Bruce! Stealing back your own song on Dave's home turf.Great intro to a fantastic concert and a nice way of doffing his cap to an old friend.
Sad to inform everyone of the passing away of the legendary saxophonist John Earle, seen playing here. The funeral however was a great send off for the very talented and gentle fellow. R.I.P
I'd REALLY like to see Dave play the solo, not Mickey Gee playing the rhythm. F***** studio directors. And nikedinburgh, you probably were joking, but John David plays the bass. He's been on and off with Dave since mid-60's.
I've met Dave Edmunds (and Nick lowe) when they played Tiffs [now a block of flats] in the 80s. I took photographs because I had to stay to help tidy up afterwards (for Regular Music).
Another concert I didn't see would've been Elvis Costello: I accidentally knocked him out, when ONLY he said I couldn't take photographs!
