I'd imagine it's because he's not using his own gear besides his bass as the gig is a fly-over and the backline is likely rental... but that is a *shitty* bass tone. Thin and clanky does no one any good.
@kingfelipe12 Pft. That's a weak argument. He posesses enough skills that he's playing with not only speed but, great accenting and amazing dynamics. He's probably Fusion and Funk trained. You just bring up speed because, you hear a Metal band that does something different and when it comes to bass you don't expect any simple Thrash lines with the same notes played fifty times and every here and there you hear a fill at empty spots. Is that your idea of a good bassist?
Holy crap.. that was terrible. I'm a huge fan of both death metal and jazz, so it being a jazzy solo is not a problem, however... that sucked. He would have been kicked off stage playing like that at a jazz festival. The timing was really weird and his tapping session was bad too. On top of everything, the tone was near disgusting. Like all clank. Perhaps just a bad day, but that was baaaaaaad.
you guys suck, this solo is awesome! its just very jazzy, and Wacken is a Death/black Metal concert so i mean....a jazz bass solo is really out of place lol
Nah I wasn't there, but like, I've come across stuff like this before, like I went to a live show and they recorded it, and it sounded like perfect live, then I watched video's of it and it made it look like the band was boring and sloppy.
OK he is the bassist of a death metal band and death metal is considered very violent and brutal, but there are many bassists outthere, including me,who don't listen to death metal and still can't play that stuff.
@amierdolo Dude, Steve DiGiorgio plays jazz in Dark Hall and even says on his own forum he started playing fretless in jazz, and Tony Choy is a session musician, how the hell would they do either of those things without knowing theory?
@Steve128967 its easy to learn a few scales and chords, but when it comes to creating solos and bass lines that go further than fifths and fourths is when we are really talking about music theory.
just listen to digiorgio and choys live solos... they suck
compare it to jimmy johnson or idk, real jazz players. its a whole different world.
@amierdolo Playing jazz with DiGiorgio speaks for itself really, and Tony obviously has to be able to read music to do sessions.
anyway, unaccompanied live solos usually aren't the greatest ever regardless of the musician. that's basically just noodling around as opposed to playing over chords and so forth.
you can't judge whether a musician knows theory or not anyway unless they specifically say it like Antti Boman of Demilich or Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth.
@Steve128967 with the most humbleness possible... you can actually notice when someone just knows how to use an instrument but doesnt know shit about real music theory. i've been playing for 9 years now, and since ive not been able to keep studying music theory i can recongnise the same limitations i have now.
even though both of them have been influences on me, technical influences, of course, specially di giorgio.
@amierdolo Theory really comes into play when improvising (over specific parameters) or composition... but even then it may not be obvious. Bulb from Periphery comes up with fairly complex rhythmic stuff yet he himself freely admits he doesn't know shit about harmonic or rhythmic theory.
Tosin Abasi went to school for music but says he doesn't think about it when writing either.
You really can't judge unless they specifically talk about it or unless it's obvious like SDG in Dark Hall...
That's a pointless argument dude. If I call a plumber (I know nothing about plumbing) and, after he's done his work, water leaks from the ceiling, would the plumber get away with "well you can only criticise if you can do better"? Hell no. He'd be treated to a very-near view of my foot.
He's no doubt way talented, I just don't get into his playing here, kinda fumbly.
