  • He's no doubt way talented, I just don't get into his playing here, kinda fumbly.

  • Really??? Ick

  • Nunca ouvi um trem mais ruim

  • this one us an epic fail

  • 47 people should die

  • Tony Choy has a lot of skill, but im not sure he knows how to properly incorporate them into his playing

  • @TheZombieXecutioner Yes! You hit that one right on the head man

  • "C'mon!! Yeah!!"

    Audience: .........

  • victor whiten xD

  • Not one of Tony's best solos. He's a great player. Everyone has bad days.

  • tony!!!!!!!! que ases en area 305!!!!!!!!!

  • I'd imagine it's because he's not using his own gear besides his bass as the gig is a fly-over and the backline is likely rental... but that is a *shitty* bass tone. Thin and clanky does no one any good.

  • @scarred2112 That's what I thought too... Most of all it's the tone that makes this a rather shitty performance... "Tony Choy Shreds" hehe.

  • At 1:04 he makes that "What the fuck am I doing" face

  • this is an attempt to be as cool as DrMr Sean Malone or JPT. the solo sounds like shit to me.

  • The crowd was probably louder than this, I assume it's soundboard audio.

  • is this the real audio? lol

it sounds like those "shreds" parodies... with the audience being really quiet.. making it look really awkward

  • the crowd is like....damn....poor guy his bass is broken....wait...its not??

  • *facepalm*

  • huh, actually this is not that great..

  • Damn, and a few minutes ago I watched a video of Mr Sean Malone......

  • Not to be big-headed, but that could be me, without having practiced much, standing nervously in front of lots of people.

  • Fractal point:)

  • not a bad player but a terrible tone molder

  • @cooliovasquez you hit the nail bang on the head :P

  • I don't know but this solo is TERRIBLE!

  • that wasn't that spectacular haha

  • Maybe he should join the red hot chili peppers.

  • He's obviously a skilled bassist. You guys just can't appreciate minimilistic sounds of bass only.

  • @SiT1986 if he has enough skill to play that fast, he could at least bother to make it sound good. this does not sound good.

  • @kingfelipe12 Pft. That's a weak argument. He posesses enough skills that he's playing with not only speed but, great accenting and amazing dynamics. He's probably Fusion and Funk trained. You just bring up speed because, you hear a Metal band that does something different and when it comes to bass you don't expect any simple Thrash lines with the same notes played fifty times and every here and there you hear a fill at empty spots. Is that your idea of a good bassist?

  • i puked

  • This horrible to say the least. I expect so much more from him.

  • dude, this sucks -_-

  • @kingfelipe12 allmost as bad as the band

  • @kingfelipe12 dude you suck

  • samba birza

  • Is this Tony Choy Shreds?

  • Horrible Solo!!

  • Oh man this is bad

  • I got stoned with this guy

  • That was Shick!

  • shit this niga in pestilence to? haha

  • Great bass solo

  • que paso?

  • lol

  • How I hate Tony Choy. He could never replace Patterson, and his bass sounds like absolute shit.

  • @razorslice17 amen

  • Crap ! lol

  • just to set an example, look for franck hermanny. ( i hate adaggio btw)

  • He's awesome but there's too much fret buzz going on. He needs the action raised a hair.

  • I love Tony Choy but this sucks...seriously, this sounds like a shreds video.

  • Like Lemmy said all the tehnic don't mean shit if you don't have the sound

  • Why?

  • /watch?v=yS-nNh7c1J4

is a much better solo of his

  • this bass is probably damaged by lightning stroke.. but i like Choy, especially for his work in Elements..

  • whos the drummer?

  • Holy crap.. that was terrible. I'm a huge fan of both death metal and jazz, so it being a jazzy solo is not a problem, however... that sucked. He would have been kicked off stage playing like that at a jazz festival. The timing was really weird and his tapping session was bad too. On top of everything, the tone was near disgusting. Like all clank. Perhaps just a bad day, but that was baaaaaaad.

  • meh

  • tony choy is my favorite bassist.. but his solos suck... but when it comes to their songs... no bassist can touch him..

  • Epic Failure.

  • Tony Choy is awesome.

  • i wouldnt say that the solo sucks, tony choy is great though i think that the bass sound just kinda makes the solo sound sloppy even though it isnt

  • it was a so-so solo but tony is an awesome bass player he might have been drunk/nervous/on something/out of it/whatever but atheist still kicks ass

  • haha, i was just chatting with him a second ago

  • Fucking jazzmetal solo!!! Great

  • Pretty bad solo period. This could be the Tony Choy Shreds version.

  • Tony was better back in the day.

  • you guys suck, this solo is awesome! its just very jazzy, and Wacken is a Death/black Metal concert so i mean....a jazz bass solo is really out of place lol

  • If Wacken is a Death/Black metal concert, how come the big 3 of German thrash played there?

  • German thrash metal is very close to early death metal.

  • Only the brutal thrash.

  • ooh man, i know tony choy is a realy good bass player, i mean he play extremely great bass lines on atheist records, but this solo sucks!

  • It was a really good solo. Wacken, however, is not the best place for a jazz solo.

  • good solo, i wish i could play like him some day,

  • tony's an awesome player but i think this solo is boring i think he could of did alot better or at least put more energy into

  • So sloppy, holy shit!

  • You guys are faggots this solo is cool

  • Faggots with ears!

  • That's just the camera quality, it sucks, but his playing is really clean.

  • If you were there I will disobey my senses believe you but it looks a little suspect on here!

  • Nah I wasn't there, but like, I've come across stuff like this before, like I went to a live show and they recorded it, and it sounded like perfect live, then I watched video's of it and it made it look like the band was boring and sloppy.

  • I hear you.

  • so much fail gawd. At least I know he's a great bassist in the band :/

  • bass solo fail

  • lol

  • his face on 1:04 is completely priceless...LOL!

  • Samba Briza!!!

  • you guys are dumb tony choy is fricking amazing

  • Oh shit.

  • litterally

  • Just bad random wankery, this can guy can compose good bass lines but on soloing he's not really good.

  • Agreed. This is kind of lame.

  • This just oozes lame.

Also it is a poor recording.

  • I'd like to see Tony Choy and Sean Malone face off in a bass solo to the death.

  • Judging by this solo, Malone would win hands down.

  • Yeah, Tony is awesome, but he's got nothing on Malone.

  • instantly reminds me of Victor Wooten.

  • how dare you say this shit sounds anything like victor

  • Someone's got a dildo up their ass.

  • OK he is the bassist of a death metal band and death metal is considered very violent and brutal, but there are many bassists outthere, including me,who don't listen to death metal and still can't play that stuff.

  • ive seen tony live hes amazing

  • his bass sounds like shit

  • You are absolutely right. Too much crackle and spitz.

  • @Xiuxiu1121 "Click-click-clickety-click!"

  • the most boringest bass solo ever

  • check out Erlend Caspersen of Blood Red Throne.. he's good too..

  • what the fuck is that?

  • 1:36 big mistake? records he's great, I wouldnt pay to see this tbh :P

  • Sloppy and totally misplaced. Why would you bust out funk chops while playing a death metal gig?

  • cuz hes fucking baked

  • Because they're heavily influenced by Jazz?

    Hur dur?

  • because their a death metal jazz fusion band...?

  • there is NEVER a wrong time for funk

  • ROFL

  • jaja pure shit

  • its funny how tony choy and steve digiorgio are so good at bass yet their solos suck.

  • @brassaflax that has a reason: great technique but 0 musical theory background.

  • @amierdolo what are you talking about? Choy and DiGiorgio both know tons of theory...

  • @Steve128967 actually they dont, otherwise they would be able to easily apply it to their playing. theyre just 2 great bass technicians.

  • @amierdolo Dude, Steve DiGiorgio plays jazz in Dark Hall and even says on his own forum he started playing fretless in jazz, and Tony Choy is a session musician, how the hell would they do either of those things without knowing theory?

  • @Steve128967 its easy to learn a few scales and chords, but when it comes to creating solos and bass lines that go further than fifths and fourths is when we are really talking about music theory.

just listen to digiorgio and choys live solos... they suck

compare it to jimmy johnson or idk, real jazz players. its a whole different world.

  • @amierdolo Playing jazz with DiGiorgio speaks for itself really, and Tony obviously has to be able to read music to do sessions.

anyway, unaccompanied live solos usually aren't the greatest ever regardless of the musician. that's basically just noodling around as opposed to playing over chords and so forth.

you can't judge whether a musician knows theory or not anyway unless they specifically say it like Antti Boman of Demilich or Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth.

  • @Steve128967 with the most humbleness possible... you can actually notice when someone just knows how to use an instrument but doesnt know shit about real music theory. i've been playing for 9 years now, and since ive not been able to keep studying music theory i can recongnise the same limitations i have now.

even though both of them have been influences on me, technical influences, of course, specially di giorgio.

  • @amierdolo Theory really comes into play when improvising (over specific parameters) or composition... but even then it may not be obvious. Bulb from Periphery comes up with fairly complex rhythmic stuff yet he himself freely admits he doesn't know shit about harmonic or rhythmic theory.

Tosin Abasi went to school for music but says he doesn't think about it when writing either.

You really can't judge unless they specifically talk about it or unless it's obvious like SDG in Dark Hall...

  • @Steve128967 whats SDG in dark hall?

  • @ThrashAh0lic Steve DiGiorgio plays in an awesome jazz band, Dark Hall.

  • @Steve128967 oh thats cool and kinda weird because his stuff with sadus was really thrashy.

  • @brassaflax if you think his solo sucks, try to play this one

  • That's a pointless argument dude. If I call a plumber (I know nothing about plumbing) and, after he's done his work, water leaks from the ceiling, would the plumber get away with "well you can only criticise if you can do better"? Hell no. He'd be treated to a very-near view of my foot.

  • Man, this guy was spectacular on the recordings and can play the shit out of his own tunes but this solo does.blow.period.

  • sucks

  • ma perchè...

  • senza senso... cane.

  • suono meglio con una vescica al pollice e la tendinite alle dita

  • chemmerda peo

  • mamma mia che merda!

  • Tony Choy is a very talented bass player,I can't wait see him playing with Pestilence this sunday!!

  • worst bass solo I've ever heard.

  • ha that was shit

  • What's with people trying to sound open minded by saying he's not incredible? I think his originality needs to be brought into this as well.

  • last time i checked, it wasnt cool to wear your own bands tshirt

  • yeah but atheist is a cool band

  • is he in atheist in 06?

  • I believe so.

  • Tony Choy's roots are pop and jazz atheist hired him to add the jazz element to their style.

  • He could use a compressor...

  • whoa.......... i expected a lot more... this was so disappointing

  • my grandma can do that

  • 1.19 that's funky

  • this made a bad first impression on me because it did sound pretty shitty. i'll have to check some of his other stuff out i guess.

  • he must of had an off day :/ i know he can do alot better. that wasent very clean. he is absolutely amazing though

  • lmao at the fools insulting tony. this man could wreck any of you guys.

  • eh.

    drums were cool

  • wow that fucking sucked for tony lol

  • som dele é muito sujo!

  • for tony choy that was preaty fucking terrible....

  • Lovely tone!

  • hes terrible

  • He's one of the most technically gifted bass players the metal scene has ever seen. And that's saying something.

Stop talking out of your fucking arse.

  • Useless ignorant? I suggest you learn how to make grammatical sense before you dare call me ignorant, you festering heap of drivel.

  • That's a pretty big statement to make... You're comparing this to players like John Myung and Andreas Blomqvist?

  • Note my use of 'one of'.
