  • Platinum...absolutely platinum. Never saw this television tribute, am so glad to know that both of these legends of tap did it together at least once. And what a moment of anticipation- the moment you see the close-up at 7:05 of Mr. Davis putting on his tap loafers, audience members are already screaming. When he mounts the stage (his body language almost seems to say, "really? okay, you asked for it...") the place fairly erupts. A moment of true dance and television magic.

  • You two are my idols I love to tap and you guys really inspire me thanks you so much for making a difference, for school we are doing a living museum I want to be Sammy Davis jr!

  • That was PURE love in that dance Gregory did; so much so, Sammy had to reciprocate it :). Very touching with both of them dancing tap. And the kissing of Sammy's feet had me in tears!

  • Thank you rodneywbrown for posting this!!

  • Amazing!

  • My mother was 95 - I was taking care of her - when we watched this telecast, and we both cried then, and I cry now, because it is so beautiful. Thank heavens for videos, when the ones we love have passed.

  • Sammy D...you Beautiful....beautiful....man!

  • Nothing against Gregory at all because he was great......but, sorry Sammy was in a league of his own. RIP to two of the greatest

  • Yesss! Another lost art that needs to be rediscovered!!

  • awesome!!!

young people today don't know much about paying respect to those who paved the way for them. rest in peace Gregory and Sammy! We miss you both!

  • @militantx0660 So true. Nothing compares to the old days of entertainment. True artists, true performers. Class by themselves. Sammy was the best!!

  • Are there even any talents on this level anymore? Correction, the talent is out there but does the entertainment world care anymore?

  • @veneziablau of course there...check your region...ppl performing all the time..dont wait for mtv to tell you about them..get involved...

  • this makes me smile every time i watch it

  • Thats whats called R E S P E C T!!!

  • what i would give to have been in gregory peck's shoes and be able to both hug and dance with sammy.

  • @sanders22158 Hines, not Peck :P Though Gregory Peck was a bamf in his own right.

  • sammy's ending was great! LMAO

  • Bless their hearts

  • これは確かに頭にこびり付いているシーンだ。子供の頃テレビでサミーがグレゴリーと何かやらかすのかなと確信して見た。家族と見た。そして誰もが感動した。

  • Two legends....Heaven became hipper the moment they got in...

  • If you don't get tears in your eyes when you watch this you have no emotion in you.

  • @davehutchinson67 maybe dead..............but with their shoes on!!!

  • RIP Gregory Hines..what a man, actor, dancer and talent...i miss him alot

  • Priceless! Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis, Jr. so rich in history.

  • I'll never forget the first time I saw this . I was so happy to see Sammy and Gregory dance together . I couldn't believe that Sammy could still move like that! But then I smiled because I remembered, that talent and passion has no age. You never lose your gifts and inner strengths, you just forget how to use them. Or some feel that they're too old to use their gifts so they just stop altogether. I admire those folks - they did what they loved until the day the died. RIP Sammy and Gregory ♥

  • 5/16/11: Interesting synchronicity... a student of mine and I are talking about Davis and Hines (may they both RIP), and this astonishing moment in showbiz history, as presented here... I come home from his lesson, and I turn on TCM, and they're running "Ocean's Eleven..."

So I come to YouTube to see if this might be out here, and lo and behold...

  • @ poughkeepsiejohn1...I remember seeing that. it was was awesome!

  • I first saw Gregory Hines on "Saturday Night Live" back in 1978. He was doing a musical segment with Eubie Blake when they were doing that Broadway musical, "Eubie!". They were both great. I wish somebody would post that segment on YouTube---one of these days.

  • That was amazing. It made me cry when he kissed his shoes at the end. I loved Sammy too.

  • @ShitFromShinolla Oh yeah. That whole tribute they did for him was touching. I will never forget that night!

  • At the time of this performance Sammy was weeks away from dying of throat cancer.

Amazing what strength the passion for your art can give you.

  • OMG, I remember watching this on TV when I was a little girl. Classic moment I hope to never forget. Thanks for posting!

  • @naomidga You won't forget. This moment was too precious. ;-)
