Ike was a great guitarist & piano man - that's him on the fantastic opening of Rocket 88 - which is a rip off of Jimmy Liggins 1947 hit Cadillac Boogie.
Just tried to find out about this guy on Wikipedia. Turns out Icky Renrut is a play on Ike Turner's name. This dude must be Ike Turner. Sure would like to know if
Jack Rabbit pre-dates Johnny B. Goode, which was written in1955. Some people think the first rock n' roll song was "Rocket 88" by Ike Turner.
Obvious Jack Rabbit was recorded in 1959& it was a plagiat. Turner should have paid Berry for that one if it would have been a success (but he did not pay Jackie Brenston either who sang lead on and composed Rocket88).Vocals were done by a singer named Jimmy Thomas. I think Berry was better than Ike Turner and put some c&w flavour to some of his songs like Maybelline/downboundtrain plus he sang his songs unlike Ike T..
Thanks for clearing this one up for me dude! On his CBC radio show "Randy's Vinyl Tap", Randy Bachman pointed out that many people had ripped Chuck off over the years. Sounds like Ike was quite a hard-ass, as well as a plagiarist! Randy also pointed out that Chuck realized the value of making his vocals easily understood by a white audience. A lot of early black stuff is hard to discern, and hard on the ears!
both musicians are/were great but proably were diffcult personalities to deal with (both men had severals stints behind iron curtains, crushes with laws or/and at least some potential of criminal energy). But they recorded some fantastic music. I have to admid when it comes to Rock and roll I prefer C Berry but I.Turner's band of the 50's to 70's did more blues & some Soul,Funk etc. which Berry did not do at all.He had also Tina, Billy Gayles a.o. on lead vocals!
@2009framat I agree, both great song writers/musicians. As for potential criminal. energy?? What well dressed, black traveling musician, well known or not, did not have "trouble" with white law enforcement in the 50's. Can you imagine having a hit song, pulling in town to do your songs, and white law making sure you knew they wanted to kill you for poisoning the white youth of their town?, US & europe believe it or not
For Ike Turner: Beating up your wife to unconciousness is criminal no matter what is the color of your skin and your nationality or having a hit record or not.
@2009framat That's common knowledge. I was refering to traveling black musicians in 50's-60's in general, because I thought you were as well, not Ike Turner only/specifically
@2009framat Who gives a shit. Really, you and a lot of other viewers are "beating up" the Ike Turner subject to death. Again, who really gives a shit. Aside from his personal life he was one of the founding Rock & Roll artists that brought us the good stuff to enjoy. Thats what matters. Back to the regular scheduled program. This obscure song rocks!
Obviously you care a lot starting to get the focus on privat lifes of the musician (reading too much yellow press aren't you) or maybe you like only to use vulgary language anonymously in the internet:-)
Please open your eyes&even you will realize that about 90% of the 6 month old conversation was about musical similarities between Berry&Renrut (who turned out to be I.Turner)and the question who "ripped" off who.So next time think before you accuse me Mr. Schoolteacher
Stick to the subject Chuck Berry, Ike Turner, Blues, Rock and Roll etc. - otherwise I am not interested in discussions about your brain or your tattoos
@2009framat Fine, but you started it ( 6 months ago or not) with talking about a non music topic. And no tats here pal, just a huge vinyl collection of real music. Later
User scottymacIII wrote: "What well dressed, black traveling musician, well known or not, did not have "trouble" with white law enforcement in the 50's. "Though he is right I replied that in the case of I.Turner there was real criminal energy .
If you cannot stand such true statements you should not care for discussions about Blues etc.&watch some old Sesame Street episodes instead :-) The fantasy world of Seame Street life is more cute & you won't find any crime there I guess :-)
@2009framat Did OJ kill Nicole ? Did you hear, Clinton got a hummer from Lewinski? Did you hear, Weiner sent pics of his pecker to women! get over it dude. Its people like you that beat dead Horses and again, THINK people give 2 shits. I flew to Europe in a plane and sat right next to Ike - we talked about music the entire trip - he was a coke head and did stupid shit - doesn't stray from the fact that he wrote great tunes, played a mean Fender Mustang . Now shut the fuck up about it.
Who do you prefer when it comes to Rock&Roll: Berry or Turner?I prefer Berry. I like his guitar style better & Dixon&J.Johnson did a wonderful job on Bass&Piano. The sound engineers from Chess did a very good job, too. He wrote the better songs&sang them unlike Turner.
From the mid 60's on I would prefer Turner because CBerry was not able to update his sound.
I wonder if you can answer without using words like shit & fuck etc.You don't impress me with such blabla
I like Ike!
Not too sure why the strange pseudonym on this vid, cool tune though.
I went to see him play twice in a bar in Malibu, but he cancelled both at the last minute. No idea if he finally played that gig, I kinda gave up.

@AjaxEddiefan Johnny B. Goode was written in 1955, but Chuck Berry didn't record it until January 6, 1958, and it was released on March 31, 1958.
Jack Rabbit, was recorded & released in 1959, I do not know the exact dates nor do I know when it was written.
