Also, for the cats, it's a safer bet to take kittens. If you take adult animals it's possible you'll end up with old one that die before they can breed.

You really don't need to embark with an Anvil of any description. By the time your fort is to the point where you'll start forging things, a trade caravan should have come (unless you embarked somewhere totally isolated from any other civ).

If it doesn't have an anvil (rare), request they bring one next time. It will be expensive, but the points you save early more than make up for it as you can trade any excess junk for the anvil later when you actually need it.

Just took a look through the wiki, and it turns out that it depends on WHAT civilization you came from. If it turned out to not have a source of iron, you're not gonna start with a iron anvil. Very sucky.

Building designer doesn't control which buildings you're allowed to build. All it does is increase the value of the buildings which he designs.

Sometimes, the iron anvil is not available at start, what you have to do is cancel the embark and choose another region.

Man, things have changed in DF since the last time I played, that's for sure. One thing I always try to take from the beginning is a few turtles. Turtle shells are very hard to get in a mountain and when a dwarf decides he needs some when the mood takes him, it's good to have a few ready.

if you downloaded the lazy newb pack from the video decription you probably forgot to activate a tile set under "graphics". lazy newb pack comes with 3 different tile sets, so choose the one you like best.

if you just the game without a tile set you play without real graphics (only with ascii characters).

if you don't have the pack, grab it

@rd950 you're unlucky then, no iron anvil is available in your region. either take the steel anvil and lose a lot of points or have no metal industry until the first (dwarven or human) caravan arrives which usually sells anvils. I usually embark without an anvil, goblin raiders will most likely not arrive in your first ingame year anyway. If they do, it's part of the FUN

@BrokenScytheRecords Not so much screwed at all... it can be tough to buy one in the first year, there is so much happening, you can get it in the second year when the dwarven caravan comes in... but its good to take one from the start to get a metal industry going... also steel is EXPENSIVE

For those of you dudes asking about the anvils... sometimes all you can get is steel. That happened in DJ's other LP, and he just didn't take an anvil.

@Aldowyn yep your right... thank you... you can fix it by selecting a different dwarven society by hitting the tab key during your embark location selection.... usually one of those civilizations will have an iron one!

@kjopapo 9 chances out of 10, you ran out of points to add, hit the tab key and adjust some of your starting goods, to free up space, if thats not the case, it could be that your running the wrong keybindings, just go into the first tab of the Lazy Newb Pack and make sure that the right keybindings txt is selected for ya... should help!

@MegaChipit I believe you hit "n" on the item list to select a new item. Scroll around and find the iron anvil. Also, be sure to go back and get rid of the steel anvil by lowering the quantity so that you don't accidentally spend 300 on two anvils! That'd be such a waste!

@PXOBOX hit k on the keyboard to look around... if you want to dig into the ground use "d" for designations, and select the area you want dug out, just like selecting tree's to cut down. use the greater, and smaller then keys (period and comma) to go up and down in z levels

@Irohin that is a bit advanced, it completely depends on what Dwarven civilization your dwarves come from, you adjust that by selecting it before you ever embark, just hit tab while you are choosing an embark location and you will see a list, select a dif one!
